Found this on another computer forum.

"PC Pitstop's best rated free software (July 2009)

"You'll have to scroll down that page to see the list. I like the Foxit PDF Reader, Eusing Registry Cleaner and Revo Uninstaller. I'm trying out more stuff too. Most of the software is available at download.com."

I'm not that computer literate but am using 2 free programs found on their list.

I'm sure that with a little effort, you could research half a hundred computer magazines/blogs/etc and come up with other lists of "best rated free software" that are entirely different. If you are "not that computer literate", you would do well to hold off on making recommendations. A better effort would be to answer specific questions when someone asks , for example, "what is a good free image viewer?" and you have an answer based on your own experience with a specific program and can provide details of your likes/dislikes about it. Just saying that you "like FoxIt Reader", etc doesn't tell the potential user anything he needs to know, for example..why is it better than Adobe Reader? If you want to help others, inform them-don't just repeat lists.

Thanks for the link Thunder. I also switched to Foxit - so much faster than Adobe.

Kathy, I still carry a notebook with me when I roam around the garden, and jot down what I planted, and where, and future ideas, and what's blooming, etc. Then I transfer everything to lists on my computer: Gardens (list of everything planted in each garden). Plants (lists of all Daylilies, all Hostas, all Alliums, all Spring bulbs, all trees & shrubs, etc.) Maps (of each garden, done with Microsoft Office Excel) I DO print everything out, BTW, just in case my computer crashes. During the winter months I update everything from my notebook. Here's an example of one of my garden maps: I can edit this any time I want, then print out a new sheet, as the garden changes. Julie

I want a FAST computer. I'm not into games, music, or videos. Although watching TV, or a DVD would be nice. #1 NEED is to wisk around the web quickly (have NO patience!).- I may be running a website/business. That is not controlled by the computer, it's controlled by the connection you have. You need DSL or "business quality" cable connections. Normal household cable is shared with everyone on the block and it can be very slow. If you plan to run a website/business, I strongly recommend you just pay a few $$ a month for website hosting - siteground.com is a good one with lots of free tools and templates - because setting one up from scratch is a technical nightmare and your thinking a fast CPU = fast internet indicates that you aren't geekish enough to do it. *********** Any computer currently on the market is enough for web, office stuff and viewing DVDs. Buy the cheapest one you can find and pay extra for more RAM (lots more RAM) and a good graphics card.

Owbist - you articulated the decision factors beautifully. And that is what makes it difficult. Presently, all I do is load it on the camera and crop. I know I would like to be able to do some color/contrast/tone/brightening adjustments, be able to edit out troublesome aspects. Eventually, I would like to be able to clean older photos and change colors (I know I would have loved to have been able to change the colors of the walls in my house to assist with paint color choices). Whether I'd ever get to something like swapping heads or filters, I don't know (I don't even know what filters are). Another aspect that is important to me is good photo organizing tool. I've been reading reviews of software editing programs (many free), and the reviews don't even mention organizing photos. I'm not sure if that's bc. they all do it, so it's not the feature worth reviewing, or bc. they don't do it. By the way, this review site is very useful - for all kinds of digital photograph questions. I'll post the link here in case others are interested: http://www.brighthub.com/multimedia/photography/articles/4488.aspx. Now if I knew how to make a tiny url of this, I would have done that. I think I even have that firefox addon, but don't know how to use it yet. I think I'm going to try Photofiltre first. Paintnet also looked good, as did photoscape. All are free. Does anyone here know photoscape? A couple of more questions, if that's okay. 1) why would someone want to resize a picture? 2) what's the advantage to having a card reader get the photos on the computer, rather than just connecting the camera to the computer via USB? My impressions are based on a limited number of contacts with tech support, but I sense that tech support overseas is harder to communicate with. Part of it is language, part is culture. Overseas tech support seems almost autometronic. They seem to have a script they work from, and if your problem doesn't fit one of their scripts, they can't help. When I asked for help in fixing the problem myself, the only reply he gave me was to ask me to let them take over my computer. And he had no response when I said no. He didn't seem to understand why I refused. And my comment, "There is no way on God's green earth I am giving you access to my computer," didn't resonate with him. This happened on the heels of another tech support call involving my cell phone company. I received an odd e-mail out of the blue from my phone provider that they were going to stop my phone service on a certain date, and when I called, I was told by someone in tech support that they were no longer going to accept payment by PayPal. So I went in to my account to change to another payment method and found myself locked out. I called for help, and they couldn't get into my account. The tech support guy from the phone provider wanted the password for my Paypal account. I refused. And he didn't seem to understand why I would not give it to him. I think someone living in the US would understand this sensitivity on the part of the customer.

I'd be very wary of the registry cleaner. I don't trust them and they can cause more problems than they solve.

I definitely agree on the warning on the registry cleaner, I do not use them and I highly urge people not to use them unless they are extremely knowledgeable about the registry.

I used to recommend foxit but now use and prefer
PDF-XCHANGE VIEWER
it has not been as affected by vulnerabilities as have Adobe and foxit.

As far as list sites go there is only one that I recommend and that is Gizmo's freelist site, he is extremely well known and has been doing the list for many years, his is one you can trust.
Gizmo's Freeware Reviews
I have been a gizmo fan for years, always got his newsletter and now that he moved to windows secrets I get the newsletter there and I do pay a donation and get the paid version it is an excellent resource.

I use and have used many of the ones listed on the PC Pitstop list, and I do like and trust PC Pitstop, I also get their newsletter. I have been recommending REVO uninstaller here since it came out and several others on the list. It is always best to ask about certain freebie programs before trying them to see if anyone knows of issues, and of course always always scan them with all your security programs before opening them.
Not all lists sites are reputable and trustworthy though many are the ones trying to supply us with their freebies with added features like malware and spyware, free is not always free sometimes we get more than we bargained for and are left trying to salvage the pc.
