I need a good program that will copy my DVD video to my computer?

I need a good program that will copy my DVD video to my computer and convert it to WMV or AVI in high quality, with no distortion to the sound or video. No trials, i already have several. I want something to keep.

Andy, I did a major photo project last fall putting photos onto DVD. Haven't yet worked with video but opened up my Roxio last night and gave it a shot. Please ignore anything that is not applicable to your situation. First thing I learned is to change my screen size to 1024 by 768 before loading Roxio. After loading you'll see a series of dropdown menus on the left side. Select Vido. Then on the center section of the screen select QUICK VIDEO WITH MYDVD EXPRESS. It'll take a minute or so for the components to load. Then you'll have a page come up showing a MENU for your video. You can use that one or select another by clicking on the options on the left side of the page. The video menu permits you to enter your choice of words. Then down at the bottom of the page click NEXT. You'll need to Browse to find the video you want to transfer. Don't know if you can get it from another source and if that is a problem, I'd load the video to my computer to make the transfer simplier. Anyway, click on the video and then click on the button ADD. If you want more than one video, hold down the control key and select the multiples you want. Finishing that, you'll get a page asking what you want to do. At the top is BURN TO DISK (or something like that - I'm working from memory) Got your DVD burner all set up, then go to it. The only one on that list I would possibly tell you to delete is the older version of Java if you want, you are supposed to delete those when you get newer ones. if you want to know what they are you can highlight and copy each one into a google search to find out more. Adobe flash player activeX is what lets you view certain types of videos and things such as you tube videos etc.you should leave it alone Intel Graphic Media has to do with your Graphics card on your pc so you really don't want to mess with that. Just google them. this is what bootskin is that one you could get rid of but you may also want to use it some day... I don't know. BootSkin this is what logonstudio is LogonStudio both of those are part of stardocks it must have come with your pc if you did not add it on. this is what all the DivX is, this is a program that allows you do video and play the divx video. DivX for Windows diskkeeper2008 is a utility that was apparently added on your pc which is used to defrag the pc and do other tasks. Diskeeper 2008 "Diskeeper defragments your system automatically in the background with absolutely zero overhead." that is their quote. If you do not use it or want it you could certainly remove it, it is usually a free trial then you would be required to purchase it. the stardoc.com items are free I think. I have never used any of those so can not comment on them. to get rid of an item listed in your add remove programs list you simply click on it to select it then click the remove button on that line. Working with video, even just converting it from one format to another is extremely taxing on the computer requires a fairly large amount of memory. With 256 MB of ram, my first thought is that your computer is paging constantly to the hard drive. If your hard drive is almost full or extremely fragmented, your system will lock up and crash. Let me explain. If I told you I was going to give you a ten digit phone number (area code + number) and asked you to remember it for a few minutes, you'd probably be able to do this from memory. Now If I told you that I was going to give you 5 ten digit phone numbers and asked you to do the same, what would you do? You'd most likely need to write it down on paper to be able to give it back to me. Right? This is the same thing that happens with the computer. The computer uses the ram in the same way you'd be able to memorize the first number. When it runs out of ram to do this, it needs to jot the information down, temporarily. It does this on a hard drive with what is called a paging file. Under default settings, the paging file size is managed by the operating system. If your computers hard drive is full to the point that the paging file is not what the operating system requires it will most likely crash. This can also happen with a heavily fragmented hard drive. Anyway, I went on a tangent there. I would recommend that you increase your system ram. The more the better, especially if your going to work with video. To get info on hard drive. Click my computer, then right click on your "C" drive and select properties. It will show you a graphical representation of the hard drive with free and used space. From this box you can select the "tools" tab and then the "defragment" utility to defrag the hard drive. Note that with 256 MB of ram, it will take an extremely long time if the hard drive is heavily fragmented and there is even the possibility it will crash. Do this overnight. The information on the video card can be found in the device manager located in the system properties which can be accessed int eh control panel. Control panel - system - hardware - device manager. Select display drivers - then your video card should show.

It could get very complicated if you are wanting to record tv on both a DVR and a DVD. Do you know for a fact that your DVD recorder has it's own tuner? If it does not, you will only be able to record the channel that your Dish box is tuned to if you can connect it to the Dish box. If it does have it's own tuner, then perhaps a splitter would do. To me, installing an amplifier/splitter on the incoming satellite feed would be the best way to approach this. Each device could then be programmed and controlled separately. We still need to know if there are enough inputs on the tv to accept multiple devices and what type they are. It might be possible to accomplish this with a splitter only, but you might need a satellite tech to determine if the signal loss by being split would be detrimental to viewing/recording.
