will a silencer help my hood?

Help! Our kitchen project starts in 2 weeks, and just stumbled over the posts mentioning the fantech silencer. We are going to vent out of the wall, about a 6 foot run. Is is worth it to do an in-line fan with a silencer, or would that be useless to cut the noise. Would it be better than the internal fan? (ordered a best by broan, and could switch to the 1100 inline from the 1200 internal..)

It would help if you could specify the space available for ducting and potential silencer. The Fantech silencer for a 10 inch duct is 14 inches in diamter and almost three feet long.

The 1100 cfm inline blower is quite bulky also and requires inlet and outlet transitions. You might be better off hanging a remote on the side of the house if it's not in plain view.

However, short duct runs with remote blowers can be noisy according to Wolf's literature (Wolf and Broan appear to use the same inline and remote blowers). In that case the silencer would probably help.

Since you will be venting out the wall that implies a 90 deg turn for a top discharge hood. If that's the configuration you have you should run at least several feet of straight ducting before the 90 deg bend.

Thanks for the reply. Looks like I will not have enough room for the silencer and the inline blower--only a 6 foot run, plus the soffit we have now appears to be 10 inches high and I don't know is there is additonal space above it or not. It is plenty deep at 27 inches. I will probably have to go with the internal blower. Our kitchen is in the front of the house so the external blower would look awful...

It beeps when you open the door?! The only time our Bosch complains is when I open the door during the final rinse or thereafter, when the sanitation symbol comes on. Otherwise, I never heard the buzzer sounding during a cycle. The buzzer in you dishwasher comes on whenever you open the door - even with the machine off? FWIW, I'm guessing the buzzer is somewhere inside the electronics - hard to access. Alex

Abbaka blower and silencer with very limited height

I put in an abbaka blower for a modernaire hood. I couldn't explain the technicalities of it all, EXCEPT, for my abbaka blower, the ductwork needed to be a 10"round. No exceptions. The contractors were a little surprised and it did present a bit of a dilemma for our install but not insurmountable. HTH.

I know at the beginning we need to install a makeup air sensor. But now our plumber told us we DO NOT need to install one since our kitchen is so opened to dining room-to family room. I get so confused because I want to pass the inspection. Is this makeup air sensor is a must to pass the inspection? It is getting to my nerve since our life is on the electrician and plumber 's mercy :)

(Multiply by 60 for minutes per hour and by 0.0929 for cubic meters per cubic foot. Here are some specific comments: Your 900 m^3/hr flow rate is equivalent to about 160 CFM. This is likely too low. Try for an actual 90 CFM per square foot of hood entry aperture (for containment), and try for a hood entry aperture that overlaps the cooking zone by enough to capture the rising and expanding cooking plumes. Cooking plumes have flow velocities and expansion angles determined mainly by the pan base temperature, with some influence from combustion products if using gas. At least overlap the range by 3 inches on the sides and front (if feasible). For these sizes and flow rates, height over the cooking zone can be up to 36 inches. To get 90 CFM with filters and other pressure losses, aim for a blower rated at a flow rate equal to 135 CFM per square foot of hood entry aperture. Make-up air (MUA) is critical to hood performance. No air flows out that didn't get into the house first. All restrictions on the getting-into part cause reduced flow rate by the blower.

I seem to remember something about the silencer requiring a couple of 90 bends and it is huge..the one that fits 8 inch duct is easily the size of a kitchen garbage can. Fortunately I had space in the attic. But yes it makes the sound go from loud to almost silent. The remote blower just looks like a blue button on your roof...much like a attic vent or any of the other little doohickies that sit on a roof...don't think it would be much of an eyesore. But I imagine there must be some quiet internal blowers too. Good luck

I have 11" between the floors of my house and needed at least 12" clearance for a silencer. The one I saw was not the size of a garbage can - just a little larger than my 10" duct and about a foot long. My vent isn't that loud, so it hasn't been a huge issue. The motor makes a hum that is fairly constant and the air movement through the vent is the variable -- and that air movement is something the silencer would not impact.
