Who installs ductwork/vent hood for cooktop?

Venting for our ductwork was not specified in our agreement with the AC or electrician on our new construction. The AC company (installed bathroom vent duct work). The estimate to vent the hood and run the vent thru the roof with a cap is $787.87 which seemed high to me. They say it will take a lot of time to make all the offsets to get the duct from the hood up thru the roof, plus the roof jack on the roof. This bid includes labor, materials and tax. Does this seem reasonable? The charge to install 3 bath fans from this AC company was $950.

They are exhausts, not vents. Anyone can put an exhaust duct in and the bathroom exhausts are required by code so if you had a GC he owes you an explanation.

It's hard to know if that price is high without knowing the details on the install (length, turns, etc.). It is a one story house or a 3? Can you vent it out a sidewall instead (go into the ceiling and then run the ducting between the joists)? The longer the run, the more turns, the move power the vent needs to have. Make sure they don't use flex duct.

Mine was installed by my husband and BIL. Between them they know all the skills involved. My HVAC guy would have done it, I had him exclude it from his bid.

Bathroom and kitchen exhausts are not required here. Only bathrooms with no window are required to have one.

We don't have a BS hood (VAH), but their instructions were to install a mounting strip across the studs and then screw the hood into that. I used a 1x6 with the top corners at either end cut off (due to pyramid shape). This strip is screwed to the studs over the drywall and then our backsplash is tiled around it (and up to ceiling). The hood sits about 1/4" off the backsplash as a result. You really cant' tell unless you look very close. Not sure what you're shooting for, but you might want to install your strip (or blocking between studs) and then drywall around/over it if you want the hood flush against the drywall. Doing something like this would give you the most flexibility to pre-drill the holes in the hood, then get it up and leveled before putting the screws in. Less worrying about hitting a stud under pressure.

Thanks so much for the reply. I just measured and it's 33" from the grate to the bottom edge of the vent hood. Is that too high then? You mentioned UP to 30"? I am glad to hear that 48" wide should be more than enough, as this thing is already gigantic. Actually, i forgot to mention that DH had a Vent-A-Hood guy out last year (before we upgraded) to make sure it was working correctly and he said it was. Thus I don't think it's a mechanical issue, just underpowered. I have seen fumes go around the vent (meaning 1/3 goes up the vent and 1/3 goes toward the fridge and 1/3 toward our window). I will try calling Vent-A-hood tomorrow. Does anyone know if i go with a diffent company, do i have to replace the existing hood? I imagine it would be very pricey! Or do they only sell them in packages? I linked below the hood that i think we have (looks like this one) which claims to have 900 CFM equivalent. Thanks for any additional insight anyone can offer. I totally get the 24"-27" placement being too low for comfort, although at 5'2", not much hits me in the face. :) My last hood was at 24" and what I found most annoying was trying to get spaghetti out of a pot. I don't have the cooktop here, but the depth of the hood is 19" (including 3 1/2" of front controls). The front of the cooktop sits at about 22", so if I understand what I'm reading here, if I'm going to cook anything smelly I need to do it on the back burners, otherwise, I'm probably okay.

If a "lot of offsets" are required the performance of the hood is likely to be compromised, as in poor.

Short and straight is much preferred.

Macy - We don't have a GC (our relationship ended early in the build process).

Labour prices vary greatly. I'm continually astounded by the lows in those US states overflowing with "undocumented" workers and the highs in certain East and West Coast enclaves. (NYC is a world in itself!)

It's best to get competitive bids.

I always bundle all ductwork together. Paying for each bit separately is like trying to build your car piece-by-piece buying them retail at the parts counter.
