Can someone recommend an audio recording freeware that has no spyware?

Windows built in 'Sound Recorder' in you Program/Acccessories.

The reason why I ask, I have Vista. When I click on "Sound Recorder", all I get is this message:

"An audio recording device cannot be found"

There are many pieces of good, free software available. I easily have a dozen major software programs that I downloaded for free, and a number of them work better than the paid versions I previously used. And just because you pay for something doesn't mean it's problem-free. It's true that paid software from a reliable company is not going to contain a virus, but it might be the target of a virus because it's popular, or it might come with add-ons that you don't want. Whenever I am contemplating downloading some free software that looks good, I usually do a Google search with the name of the product +"review" or +"problem" or +"scam". If you see that a lot of people seem to be happy with it, or that you don't get significant negative hits, then it's probably safe. Even so, save it first and then give it a virus scan before installing.

Which is appropriate equipment to record albums on CD or computer

I picked the easy way out and bought for under $100 a USB turntable that connects to my computer. Software made by Cakewalk came with it as well as Audacity, but the Cakewalk software is very easy to use. I can save in different formats, burn to CD, etc. So much easier than any of the other methods I have read about. The turntable I bought is made by Audio-Technica, although there are several different brands available. I found mine by doing a search using Google, and after I decided on this brand, I searched for the best price I could find. I bought through an online merchant for a price much better than CC or BB for the same model. Sad to say, I haven't done very much with it as yet, converting only a few albums to digital, but I listen to the albums just for the fun of it. By the way, it has a dust cover, so I have it sitting on a little table next to my computer desk.

You guys are the greatest. What a wonderful, helpful community (and frankly, just what I needed after a very tough week of people being difficult, unhelpful and irresponsible). Thanks. I love the tutorials for Audacity - and will probably want to play around with that some. But before I got those responses, I did some more searching and found a very simple program called MP3 Key Changer. It allows you to save up to 3 versions for free - so that will suffice for my daughter's purposes of creating one higher pitched and one lower pitched version. The free version may also save only a portion of the song - but my daughter only needs a few bars, not the whole song. The full software costs $45. So if we want further transposing, I think we'll learn Audacity. And I can imagine her learning audacity to change the background tracks so she can sing any song she wants in her own key. Bob - your links were great places to start learning Audacity. That might be a driver issue with whatever audio card or onboard audio you may have. Look in Device Manger for any yellow exclamation marks and check with the manufacturer for the latest, greatest drivers.

I guess I should be asking what you are trying to record?

I have used Audacity for years and love it. However, I have trouble with it on my new machine with Vista.

I looked in Device Manager, and didn't find anything that has to do with recording function. Since the sound works for everything else, I didn't want to chnage the driver and risk messing things up. I thought may be a separate software may be a better idea.

Many times when I go on a site that has audio, or news, I wish I can record just the sound for later.

Audacity does not work on my Vista machine.

Richt click the speaker icon in the system tray and select Recording Devices. Set one as the default.

If nothing shows up there, Try this (found it by googling your error message):

START MENU > CONTROL PANEL > HARDWARE & SOUND > SOUND > MANAGE AUDIO DEVICES > RECORDING TAB > RIGHT CLICK IN BLANK BOX & CHECK "SHOW DISABLED DEVICES.

yah.. your mixer is disabled I think.
Sound recorder works basic output to record stuff playing in windows or a microphone, any wired inputs.
