screen appears different after safe mode

I had been getting a blue screen saying windows unexpectedly shut down.I started up in safe mode & done a system restore.Now it is working but the appearance of most pages is off.It seems quite large & just looks different. I have a windows Vista desktop .I have Kaspersky.

The FaceBook looks strange.Everything seems large.Icons on desktop are large

Any help will be much appreciated!

appearance of most pages is off. ... if you mean appearance on web pages,, you might want to look in your browser for its zoom feature and set it to 100% = normal .. or maybe simply hold down the Ctrl key while you gently and slowly rotate your mouse wheel - which zooms and unzooms webpages too.

But you also said desktop which sounds like the resolution maybe has changed.. right click blank spot on desktop.. choose properties and look around there.

Your husband may well be able to rebuild this computer. However it would be best to ensure that the issue is with the motherboard and not some other component. What if you buy the board for $100 after being absolutely sure it is the same and all the current components are compatible but the computer still does not work. Returning good parts is not an accepted way with computer stores. The chances of finding a 6 year old motherboard are slim at best, current boards will not accept those older parts probably. Somewhere on that board is a model number and revision number to make the search easier. Most importantly you cannot use your current XP operating system so you need to buy another one, another $100 plus gone and for an operating system 2 steps behind the times. Your current XP is tied to the specific motherboard it was installed on with factory built computers. You will need to ensure you either have all the CDs that came with the computer so that all the drivers are available or that you can find them for free online. The processor will need cleaning once removed and it will require Arctic Silver or equal quality paste to re-seat the heatsink on the processor. This bit is the most difficult or frightening apart from deciding on what parts are compatible. Do the math then take a look at today's computers for pricing. Also if hubby feels good about it check components to self build, it can be a very gratifying experience once all the parts are determined and compatible with each other. You likely will only be able to salvage the hard drive from the existing machine if you build new.

Glad owbist corrected me after assuming your son had the same adapter. Try the test with your adapter. If you can bootup without the battery in place and with your adapter plug in shut down and reconnect the battery and try it again. I had a recent black screen and this is what I did after trying all kinds of things all was fine afterwards. Hope it works for you.

This has happened to me. All my clothing was affected - you see the white residue on dark clothing because of the color. I thought it was mold and spend a lot of money having the clothes tested. Not mold. I got new washer and dryer and the problem continued. I changed my detergent - the problem continued. I tried every variation of doing the laundry - I used hot water - no luck. If I put the clothing in the dryer or iron it, then the residue disappears for a day or so, but comes right back. Finally I stopped my frequent use of shea butter. The problem disappeared within a few weeks. I stopped using shea butter for 3 years. I just started using it again, and the problem started again. I don't know of anyone else who has had this problem. I don't know if it is caused by my chemistry with the Shea butter, but it is the only connection I can find. This is the only forum I have found that talks about this...in many years.

I think a level of wariness of microwaves is healthy. Like any subject these days, you can find plenty of documentation and studies supporting either viewpoint. It just comes down to personal comfort levels. I have a microwave and I do use it but I avoid standing near it when I do, and I try to only microwave in ceramic containers. Human history is full of examples of seemingly harmless stuff that turned out to be dangerous once technology caught up enough to figure it out. Some examples off the top of my head would be asbestos in construction, lead in paint, Shoe-Fitting Fluoroscope in the 30's and 40's. In another 20 or 30 years we'll have a similar list that I guarantee will have some "safe" practices that we do today on it!

Yes,I've rebooted.I went to where I get SafeMode & entered "Start normal"
PC seems to be functioning OK.No more "shut downs",blue screens.
Desktop looks better.Now need to get icons a tad larger.But side bar is in correct proportions.It was way off.
This forum looks pretty normal.Gmail is wonky.Home page is strange.Facebook looks pixelated.
I will do what Mikey suggested after morning walk.When this thing isn't right it drives me nuts!
On desktop there is a white border at bottom that wasn't there before.
Thanks for help.Will be back later.

Your description sounds as if you are still operating in Safe Mode. Did you shut down completely and reboot? That's what I think you need to do.

If the above doesn't help:

Right click on the Desktop. Select Personalize on the appearing drop down menu. On the next appearing page select Display Settings. What is the resolution setting? On my Vista desktop it is 1280 x 960.

On your browser ctrl+ and ctrl- will toggle the size of your screen.

The resolution will not stay set.It keeps going back to the lowest setting.
Gmail is bad.No place to delete messages. An earlier poster put a picture on here of her gmail.This is what mine looks like.Just a row of empty boxes to the left.I can't check anything.
I want my redX back at top right!
Hardly looks like my computer. I'm old & hate change.

I have to ask as we all have done it more than we would admit. When you reset the resolution do you click on Apply before OK?

If I see an apply button, I click it before OK to make sure whatever is saved.

The page where I reset was so large I that the OK & apply wasn't showing at the bottom.So of course I didn't check.I managed to get it small enough to see those boxes & check.I had it set all the way to right & now everything is so tiny I can hardly see but I am on the right track & everyone here certainly helped.
Also thanks to poster Jane & answers I think I can fix Gmail

Use the slide bar until it says 1280 x 960 above the bar. On my Vista that is one "notch" from the right. Then Apply and OK. That was the original Vista setting.

dammcoy,I have it set at 1280x960 & it stays there.Haha I got my red X bacK.igoogle is the page I open to as it was before this fiasco.Gmail is tolerable but it still wants to be off kilter in width as do some other things.It is like the pages are stretched in width.Facebook is like it was.This group saved me a lot of time & frustration & likely a service call.
My poor brain really got it's exercise the past couple days!
