screen appears different after safe mode

I had been getting a blue screen saying windows unexpectedly shut down.I started up in safe mode & done a system restore.Now it is working but the appearance of most pages is off.It seems quite large & just looks different. I have a windows Vista desktop .I have Kaspersky.

The FaceBook looks strange.Everything seems large.Icons on desktop are large

Any help will be much appreciated!

appearance of most pages is off. ... if you mean appearance on web pages,, you might want to look in your browser for its zoom feature and set it to 100% = normal .. or maybe simply hold down the Ctrl key while you gently and slowly rotate your mouse wheel - which zooms and unzooms webpages too.

But you also said desktop which sounds like the resolution maybe has changed.. right click blank spot on desktop.. choose properties and look around there.

Have you rebooted after using safe mode?

Here is the skinny, Get yourself to the site raven suggested. If you are infected with System Check it is important that you do not delete any files from your Temp folder or use any temp file cleaners. This is because when the infection is installed it will delete shortcuts found in various locations and store backups of them in the %Temp%\smtmp folder. It does this so that you when try to launch a program from your start menu, none of your shortcuts will appear and thus making you think that your computer has a serious problem. Therefore, you do not want to delete any of the files in your Temp folder as it will remove the backups that we will use later in the guide to restore your Windows Start Menu. To make matters worse, recent variants of this family have been know to install the TDSS or ZeroAccess rootkits as well. I tried Ctrl + Alt + Delete before I posted > no go. I had to force a shut down on my laptop. I went back in and click the safe mode option. Got to what I wanted to preform and things don't seem right. Should I be doing a disk error checking on xp before a defrag? Cause I did. It's setting at phase 4 with boxes appearing in the scan line that are grayed out. Win 98 was so easy I feel like a newbie with XP. Very frustrated at this point.

May you never be forced to try it! Perhaps with all the updates Microsoft sends to Windows 10, some of the other tricks that used to work no longer do--or perhaps the action that brings on the black screen with cursor has a bearing on which solution will work. Lol, could it be that a year or two years from now, the sixth time will be the charm?

Yes,I've rebooted.I went to where I get SafeMode & entered "Start normal"
PC seems to be functioning OK.No more "shut downs",blue screens.
Desktop looks better.Now need to get icons a tad larger.But side bar is in correct proportions.It was way off.
This forum looks pretty normal.Gmail is wonky.Home page is strange.Facebook looks pixelated.
I will do what Mikey suggested after morning walk.When this thing isn't right it drives me nuts!
On desktop there is a white border at bottom that wasn't there before.
Thanks for help.Will be back later.

Your description sounds as if you are still operating in Safe Mode. Did you shut down completely and reboot? That's what I think you need to do.

If the above doesn't help:

Right click on the Desktop. Select Personalize on the appearing drop down menu. On the next appearing page select Display Settings. What is the resolution setting? On my Vista desktop it is 1280 x 960.

On your browser ctrl+ and ctrl- will toggle the size of your screen.

The resolution will not stay set.It keeps going back to the lowest setting.
Gmail is bad.No place to delete messages. An earlier poster put a picture on here of her gmail.This is what mine looks like.Just a row of empty boxes to the left.I can't check anything.
I want my redX back at top right!
Hardly looks like my computer. I'm old & hate change.

I have to ask as we all have done it more than we would admit. When you reset the resolution do you click on Apply before OK?

If I see an apply button, I click it before OK to make sure whatever is saved.

The page where I reset was so large I that the OK & apply wasn't showing at the bottom.So of course I didn't check.I managed to get it small enough to see those boxes & check.I had it set all the way to right & now everything is so tiny I can hardly see but I am on the right track & everyone here certainly helped.
Also thanks to poster Jane & answers I think I can fix Gmail

Use the slide bar until it says 1280 x 960 above the bar. On my Vista that is one "notch" from the right. Then Apply and OK. That was the original Vista setting.

dammcoy,I have it set at 1280x960 & it stays there.Haha I got my red X bacK.igoogle is the page I open to as it was before this fiasco.Gmail is tolerable but it still wants to be off kilter in width as do some other things.It is like the pages are stretched in width.Facebook is like it was.This group saved me a lot of time & frustration & likely a service call.
My poor brain really got it's exercise the past couple days!
