cracked CD

My beloved Scrabble CD developed a crack that is growing. So far the game still plays properly. Is there any danger that the CD will break in the disc drive or in any other way cause damage to the computer if I continue to use it? The new games on the market do not appear to be as good as this older one so I'd like to make it last.

Why not copy the contents to the hard drive then create a new CD?

5f it breaks, it won't hurt your computer, but it will become unplayable, so the suggestion to copy it, pronto, is a good one.

I do not know if you want to spend the money on expensive scissors but I used the heavy Fiskars Scissors and after putting them in the sun all day I sat down one evening on the patio and they cut very easy. I had a old pair from my seamstress days. I do not even know if they make them this heavy anymore.

I've never put one in the microwave and am curious, when you mentioned you put water in a dish. Did you put the CD in the water? Guess I don't understand the method. I don't want to destroy my microwave by trying this...Yikes :-) I'm wondering if you could heat the CD in the oven, get it hot, then drop it in a bath of ice water? Kind of like the fried marble method.

I think you're going through a lot of trouble for nothing. If you're using an updated browser, the connections to your bank and financial institutions use a level of encryption that for these purposes can be reasonably called unbreakable. There's no one monitoring your internet traffic trying to crack into your savings account. Make your connections with your regular Windows boot up and sleep well.

We bought a Samsung french door 29' and are waiting for Lowes to come back and get it. The door are curved and so are the handles which makes it stick out WAY too much in the kitchen. The leds are really cool UNTIL you put food on the shelves and then it looks like the lights are out. Kind of defeats the purpose of not having food rot in the back. Mechanically speaking we are not having problems. Just my FYI

If it's not copy protected, I would make a backup of it immediately. Don't just copy the files and folders. Use a program that will make an exact copy.

Thanks for the suggestions to make a copy. The software is copy protected; I only lease, not own it. The cd has to be in the disc drive to play the game.

I'm not knowledgeable enough to copy something like this, and don't think it would be legal anyway.

Is it safe to put a cracking cd in the drive?

I guess eventually the cd could crack worse and jam the mechanical part of the drive.

I am sorry, I don't buy that theory if I have spent good money on a product. You are not looking to sell or mass produce, you simply want what you paid for.

Having to put a CD in the drawer to play rather than be allowed to install onto the hard drive seems obscene to me.

I agree with owbist 100%. And, if they no longer sell the CD why would they care if you reproduce it for your own use? Looking at the repair video I would worry about the tape coming off in the drive and gumming up the works.

I copy all my game CDs for a back up after I ran over one with my desk chair. I did not know it had fallen our of the package.

A disk is read by a laser that is not in direct contact with the disk, so a crack is not going to hurt the drive, but the disk will become unreadable at some point. Copy it, enjoy it, and quit worrying.

you paid for it you own that disc, if disc is in disrepair you have the right to simply save to pc and burn to new disc, nothing wrong with that.
If the crack gets bad enough it could definitely get jammed up in there and possibly keep the drawer from opening.

I'm curious about why a cracked disc would jam up a drive unless it broke into pieces...which I've never seen happen in use. With the multiple disc layers, it seems like it would be really hard to get it to come apart completely.

depends on how it was cracked if it cracked in a way that part of it popped up it could stop the drawer from opening if it got hung up inside. Not knowing the extent of the damage to it would be hard to say though.

Put a self-adhesive label on the CD.

The CD spins at a high speed. The centrifigal force will tend to tear it.

The label will reinforce it somewhat, and if it breaks, the small pieces will not get into unknown places inside.

If this is a subscription or lease, why can't you get a new disc from the vendor?
