Comments (22)Bumped into this thread. I have used a lot of cast iron; stole most of it from the old home so some pieces are more than 50yrs old and still kicking. Best method for cleaning old skillets seems to be filling with cold water and bringing to a boil on the stove. Watch out that you do not cook off all of the water and overheat. Scrape off anything stuck with a metal spatula or scraper. I was always told to avoid steel wool as the particles could clog the pores in the iron. A 3M scrub pad works pretty good. I clean my skillets and dutch ovens occasionally if I have been sloppy; reseasoning with Crisco works; so does bacon grease (and it tastes better!) Some good ideas above on rust removal; I will give it a try on a skillet and muffin pan. One of the health lists advised cooking with cast iron was better for women because it can add iron to their diets which may be lacking. Best bet for old cast iron is yard sales, estate sales etc. EBAY/On-Line tends to overprice and the shipping costs may negate any savings. Be careful and look for cracks/flaws. Just because it does not say Griswold or Wagner doesn't mean that the piece is without value. Since Le Creuset is very easy to clean, it is often easier to clean and dry by hand. We recommend hand washing in warm sudsy water with a nylon brush or pad to maintain the beauty of your finish. Q: Can stains be removed without costly special cleaners? A: Yes, by soaking 2 - 3 hours with a bleach solution of one teaspoon household bleach per pint of water. I found it interesting that there is a new product being advertised on the website that is a cleaner and stain remover! I may take a ride out to the company store here in Connecticut this weekend to see of they have the product. I might just give it a try. Comments (4)I saw them at Marshalls this weekend and was wondering the same thing. I think they had 3 and 5 quart. I like my 7.25 Le Creuset but have often found myself wishing for something smaller in addition. For the "relatively" low price of $50 (for the 5, as I recall) I'm tempted to take a chance but would love to hear other opinions. Seems to get good but limited reviews on Amazon. Comments (22)Like Linda and some others, I use all my cast iron Enamel cookware and stopped worrying years ago about some staining. Some of the newer pieces clean up beautifully. But one of my older pieces from Le Creuset is stained on the outside and very difficult to get cleaned. I use to go to all kinds of trouble to try and keep the outside of that pot clean. Now I don't bother. It is one of my favourites and you can tell by looking at it that it has been used often over the last 25 years. One method I found for cleaning up enamel coated pots that have staining is to soak them in a sink with dishwasher detergent.(Cascade). Softens the baked-on stains and they wash off easily. Kandm, I have a set of vintage Griswold cast iron and I often use it to cook chili and tomato based sauces in it. Hasn't harmed my pots and in fact, one of my favourite Tex Mex chili recipes actually states that "Chili just doesn't taste right if you don't cook it in an iron pot". LOL!
