How weird, my post to this thread has disappeared. Basically, I had said that it's physiological and genetic, depending on how you use the words. When plants are grafted together, the cambium and phloem cells have to join at the graft. The cells along the graft will even exchange some genetic material. Even plants from different genera have been grafted successfully, but that's much rarer than intraspecific and interspecific grafting. If I were going to ask a similar question at school, I'd rephrase it something like, "Can you explain the specifics of what determines which species and genera can be grafted together successfully?" While you're at it, you might ask them to cover what makes some grafts fail after an initial, seemingly successful period. If you ask, come back and tell us what they said, so we can discuss their input.

I came across the citrus tone for the first time the other day myself at Ace. I had the same question as you as far as the organic...All I know is that holly tone, plant tone, ect is all made by the same people and that alot of organic gardeners swear by the stuff. Sorry I cant be of more help but Thats all I know ;-) Dont know whats up with the search its been out most of the day!

Hi littlecity, Welcome to GardenWeb. I really wish you had posted your question before taking such a drastic measure. While clipping leaves may work, it also can lead to sunscald, a yellowing of the side of the tomato exposed to the sun. Hopefully that won't be a problem for you. To speed ripening late in the season, it is generally recommended that you "root prune" your plants by either grasping the main stem close to the ground and give it a good jerk while twisting slightly, or taking a shovel and driving the blade into the ground 8-10" a few inches from the main stem on two sides. What that does is stress the plant so that it "panics" and starts ripening the fruit earlier than it would normally.
