Can't get on Internet because of virus

Some things popped up when my daughter was using computer. She closed the pop ups, but now none of the programs will run, our antivirus wont run, and we r unable to connect to Internet explorer. Any ideas on how to fix this without Internet?

Tap the F8 key repeatedly while starting.
This will take you to the start up options menu.

Probably choose there last working configuration restore point. Or some computers will have Repair my computer.. which takes you to more options .. and from that screen you can choose what date you would like to go back in history to.. with the System Restore

If you towed your car to the dealer and told the service advisor "it made a noise and now I can't start it"...they might possibly fix it but not until they charged you a ton of money to check everything because you told them almost nothing. This forum seems to be a magnet for posts such as this and it just boggles my mind.

After you pay someone to fix it, the person using this computer should consider some basic instruction on how problems such as this can be avoided otherwise I can assure you it will happen again.

I don't see an issue with AVG on 7. I do see an issue with McAfee see link. If you like AVG and are use to it then for sure consider it. Download it to the desktop and install it. If you restored to factory settings like you said McAfee should not be active, a perfect time to uninstall it. It should uninstall using programs and features, we don't even need to worry about that yet because no McAfee files are running yet. Note The McAfee removal tool is not removing some new versions of McAfee. "Enterprise Software Detected" please contact McAfee. Lets avoid that or it's off to Revo un installer. When you get home connect Ethernet cable to the laptop. Then try going to www.google.com. Only go there just see if Google opens. Let us know if you get this far and we can give you a direct link for AVG so you may install that. Then while McAfee is not active we can uninstall it as I mentioned. If you want I can look at a hijack log for you after.

Can't get FF to load

Thank you all, I'm still at work but will give all those a try when I get home. Weird part is sometimes when the screen is trying to load and I click on a 'favorite' it opens the site such as this forum. But I can't navigate away from it. Same thing happens with both browsers. I use Bing as a home page for FF and Google for IE. I don't know what DNS means or what to look for. When looking at the white screen I see that site listed on the bottom tool-bar. All my other machines work fine in the house except this one. I've had connection problems (slow loading) with this machine for a long time. Now its worse. Thank you all again, Jane

just be sure if you decide to use zonealarm you get the free version not the trial version and do not get any of that added stuff. ZoneAlarm ® Firewall that should be the direct download for the free za as was stated as you go along with a firewall and it asks you to allow it to access the internet the ones you know for sure like your antivirus and your browsers you can put a check mark in the remember this box and it will no longer ask you for that one unless you do an update to the program then it will ask again and you tell it to remember again. You do not want to give server rights to anything so if the box pops up asking for server rights say no then it will pop up asking for just permission to access that one you can allow if it is something you are familiar with. If you do not recogonize the name of what is asking for permission you say no, then if you see that something you were trying to use would not open you know that was the thing that was asking for permission, so you can know to allow it next time. That generic 32 one that had you worried you MUST allow that or you can not do anything, that is a process you need to set to always allow. First time you use any program the firewall will have to ask you for permission, say your music player for example, tell it yes to permission and check the box for remember and you are done with that it will not ask you again. At first it seems daunting but once you get thorugh that initial flood of setting up what can and can not access then you rarely ever get bothered by it. What you are trying to prevent is allowing something that you are not familiar with which may be malware that got on your computer and is trying to phone home to whoever wrote the malware and it will then be sending info from your pc to that person. that is why it is very important not to just always click to allow, know what you are allowing. If you do not recognize a name copy and paste it in google and see what you find out usually you can tell right away what program it is. also with most firewalls you can click for details and it will give you info that can help tell what is asking for access. I am totally self taught and also one of the older crowd, we were all newbies at one time! but please if you do not put in a firewall DO go turn on the one you have with xp it is better than nothing, however if you put one in you must turn that xp one off you can not have 2 firewalls.

Before you go spending money, let's try a few things. When you took your router to default, everything worked fine. When you use a pass phrase, you get to the internet but web sites don't load. I have a copy of your router manual in front of me so let's try a few steps. 1------Log onto your router 2------Under the wireless setup make sure the SSID reads NETGEAR 3------Make sure the operating channel for the wireless mode.is Auto. 4------ Leave the wireless mode set to the default setting of Up to 145Mbps for 2.4GHz. 5------ Select security options for the 2.4GHz wireless network.The wireless Security Options are set to None by default. 6-----use WPA2-PSK as your security option. 7----- enter the following as your passphrase wndr3400 make all letters lower case. Select APPLY at the bottom of the screen. Under DIAGNOSTICS, select the REBOOT option. Once the router reboots, close out all your screens and reboot you computer. When prompted for a passphrase enter wndr3400 all letters must be lower case. Please post back and let us know if that did the trick.

Please do not purchase any products. You can get help to clean this yourself, please go to the link I provide and register there, you will need to start a post there just like you did here. I am there too. The team there will help you step by step to run some special scans and programs to clean up your pc, all free, and you will learn a lot in the process. go there and please only follow the directions given to you there, do not follow any directions you may see for someone else.

Can you use the computer you posted here with to download a program? If so go here and click to download Kaspersky Rescue Disk 10 from the author's site.

Then go here to read the How To Geek's tutorial on how to use the program you have downloaded above.

Read the tutorial carefully and follow along, it will take care of any infections your computer may have.

The team at LzD will be able to help get it working as long as they have another computer that works to communicate with which apparently they do.
The ones that disable the AV and settings like that are really best handled at the removal forums where they can read the logs and determine if all remnants are removed.

Why would you presume that any rescue disk from reputable companies would not be capable of cleaning a computer? Most have been around for the best part of a tidy while and seem very competent.

They are quite often a great resource but having seen these type in particular, the use of combo fix with guidance for what remains is essential.
Some types of infection can be fully removed with use of those discs and I have recommended them, but it won't do it all is the point. And if assistance is going to be needed for use of other programs like combo fix for example then it is really better to have the help from the beginning so everyone is on the same page.
For some people with out step by step guidance this kind of removal can be very daunting.
I am not diminishing the effectiveness of the mentioned discs.
