Can Blue Mist Spirea handle reflected heat?
Comments (4)let us know how it goes; I did find this comment on a site called learn2grow in conjunction with Lowes - When the weather gets hot (over 85 degrees F), blue mist will slow down and flowering will decrease, but pruning back old blooms will encourage new ones. Very hot summers and very cold winters are the bane of this plant, so it can be short-lived. Plants arenÂt grown from seed, but they can be propagated easily from cuttings. As a result, it may be best to treat blue mist as a short-lived shrub and replant periodically (every 3-4 years). To create new plants, take softwood cuttings (the easily bendable, green wood) during summer. TheyÂll root easily, so rooting hormones arenÂt necessary. Just stick your cuttings in a good, well-draining potting mix and provide even humidity and lots of light (but not direct sunlight). So it may be that Texas heat isn't good for it. http://www.learn2grow.com/gardeningguides/shrubs/featuredplants/BlueMist.aspx You might also chat with High Country Gardens, they also know their stuff - a search for blue, xeric, in our area yielded this list: http://www.highcountrygardens.com/catalog/find/results/?category=101&query=&tags%5Bbloom-time%5D=&tags%5Bsun%5D=902&tags%5Bmoisture%5D=502&tags%5Bsoil%5D=&tags%5Bheight%5D=&tags%5Bflower-color%5D=303&regions=801&zone=&x=30&y=9 Have fun, I know what it is like to try to find the perfect plant for the tough spots......See MoreVelux sun tunnels what is the quality of the light?
Comments (15)I wasn't thrilled with the "bluish" color from 2 new Velux SunTunnel skylights. I searched around a bit on the web and was able to find color filters made specifically to shift color temperature from Rosco. I wanted to go from 5500k daylight to 3000-4000k. I ordered a few filters in 1/4CTO and 1/8CTO so I could stack them and go from 1/8 to 1/2 in 1/8 increments. B&H photo (links below) had them in stock. I ended up using a 1/8 CTO http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/44204-REG/Rosco_RS340911_3409_Filter_RoscoSun.html and a 1/4 CTO http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/44204-REG/Rosco_RS340911_3409_Filter_RoscoSun.html stacked, for about a 1500k shift. The filters were easy to trim to size and lay on top of the diffuser. The light is now very close to an incandescent, probably around 4000k, but isn't amber. There is some reduction in brightness, but we are in Texas, so there is plenty of light :) I was a little worried that the diffuser would look yellow on the inside, but it is so close to white that you don't notice any difference at all. Previously people would walk in and say "wow, that is a really blue skylight", now they don't even realize it's a skylight at all, they think it's just a cieling fixture. Comments (15)Remodelfla, i just had our Solatube's installed this morning in the kitchen and we absolutely LOVE them. So sorry but i left my camera at a friends house but as soon as i get it i will snap a shot for you. The difference in the kitchen is amazing and we will definately be using a lot less lights with these installed. I actually saw these on HGTV's "I Want That". I was talking to the guy that installed it and i asked him which he is installing more the Solatubes or Traditional skylights and he said the Solatubes. He said with the traditional skylights the light comes through depending on how the sun hits the skylight and can change throughout the day and they do cast shadows. With the Solatubes the light is evenly distributed throughout the space. He was right and again we are very happy with the product. Oh, I did see Velux's solar tube installed in another home and the differenct in brightness in light with the Velux and Solatube is Solatube WINS hands down. Solatube is the original manufacturer of the solar tube. Just food for thought!!! Good luck!!!...See MoreNeed Plant for Area With High Light and Reflected Light
Comments (10)@Kerry, Sphaeralcea Ambigua might be a perfect plant for this location. The flower color perfectly enhances a boring dark concrete planter, while contrasting to the white wall. That section of the garden is boring and needs color. Would this grow in gritty mix? I noted that this plant wants very alkaline soil, and the bark in the gritty mix tends to make it a bit more acid. I am not sure that garden lime would blend all that well into the gritty mix given the size of the particles. I could also put it into a well-draining soil that has <30% peat and mostly pumice and coarse sand for the inorganic components. That soil would be much wetter but does drain well. But that soil could have alkalinity adjusted easily. How deep do the roots go on this plant? I only see this available online as seeds. Most nurseries will carry it this time of year?...See Morelynne_melb
