Has anyone used quilted fabric for cold weather window treatment?
Comments (11)I'm surprised, I didn't expect to get much response. I did look at that link to WindowQuilts, my3dogs, and it is what I remember seeing a long time ago when they were a little more popular. I don't think I want to install tracks. Thanks for the link, though. That helped me make the decision that I want to make something myself. Daisy what you are describing is exactly what I was thinking of doing! I hadn't got to the point of figuring out to use a second tension rod on the bottom yet, and I was still considering whether to roll them up during the day and tie with ribbon, or use cords in the back, etc. I think the idea of using two tension rods and just raising the bottom during the day to fold it over is a perfect one! I think I am following your directions ok, all except the idea of cutting the fabric 2 inches larger all the way around. I assume you have to add more than 2 inches to the inside measurement of your window in order to make rod pockets and is the 2 inches on top of that addition? And what about the two inches on the sides? Is that seam allowance or is the finished panel, larger than the window opening? ghostlyvision, I will certainly post photos if I can manage to make these. Thanks!...See MoreHas anyone used thermally broken aluminum windows? i
Comments (5)My double-pane windows are 10 years old. Their seals may last another 10 years or they may begin to fail sooner. Seal failure is shown by condensation between the inside and outside panes that gives a foggy look. My windows came tinted, and as far as I can tell the tint has not diminished. It is not advisable to add tinted film to double-pane windows, so if you want them tinted buy them that way. I don't know what you mean by "thermally broken" windows. To me that means windows with a failed seal. Even though moisture may get between the panes, the air space is still there providing a buffer against heat transfer. An alternative to buying new windows is to buy interior storm panels. These are especially good for hard to replace windows. Here are links to three companies: #1, #2, #3...See MoreHas anyone used Arcadia Custom for their windows or doors?
Comments (40)I have not had good luck with Arcadia multi sliding aluminum doors. They look beautiful, but the first time they were installed, the contractor said parts were missing and some directions were wrong. The doors would stick and wouldn't always lock. The second time they were installed, everything worked better, but as soon as the rains came, they started leaking. The water leaks ruined my floors and went into the walls and behind cabinets. It has been 3.5 months and my house is still torn up waiting for doors to be reinstalled a third time. Arcadia, rep and installer are currently communicating about the best way to handle situation. And now on the exterior the dark bronze coating is starting to come off. Does anyone know if Arcadia door frames can withstand 3 installs? FYI - Arcadia says if one wants water to drain out of the sill, weep holes need to be ordered with the door, otherwise they are not included....See MoreHas anyone used a SkyCove window (modern bay window)? Pros / Cons?
Comments (0)Hi all! We're getting ready to buy and update a ranch-style house that we hope to live in for quite some time. The house has a large window in the front for the living room -- I'm guessing probably 8 feet wide. One thing I've always wanted is a window that sticks out with a little reading nook in it. A modern apartment I lived in 20-ish years ago had one and I'd spend hours there reading. While adding a bay window or bow window could get me this space, I'm really worried about those options feeling too out-dated. So, imagine my delight when I stumbled upon this SkyCove concept from Marvin windows: https://www.marvin.com/products/spaces/skycove https://www.marvin.com/-/media/project/tenant/marvin/products/spaces/skycove/marvin-spaces-skycove-valuable-space-2400x1600.jpg?ts=057f7f43-3a8f-4958-bbc3-772c1c626afe&w=2400&hash=3D669CA3D214E2418B1455EC30FAB58E It would get me the seating space I want, but would look much sleeker than frumpy old-fashioned bay windows. It's a pretty new product, and I'm not able to find much info about it. Anyone here try one of these yet? If so: - Pros? - Cons? - Cost? Do other window-makers have a similar product that I simply haven't found yet? Would love to hear from anyone who has thoughts! Thank you!...See Morepeachieone
