Can I go directly from IE 6 to IE 8?

I am still using IE 6 and am fine with it but ancestry.com keeps harrassing me to update to IE 8. Can I go directly from IE 6 to IE 8 or do I need to first go to IE7? Are there problems with this process? I am not highly skilled in computer matters.

Running XP SP3.

You might consider going to IE7 first and get use to it. IE 8 does not play well with xp in some cases. To answer your question yes you could.

You will see some differences in the interface between IE6 and IE7orIE8. IE8 is more like 7 than 6, so maybe Zep's suggestion to go with IE7 first, to get used to it is a good idea. The the change to IE8 will not be so great.

I meant to reply sooner, but have been away. Pawneepapa, you made it it a success! We just helped a little. I was wowed by the variety I received in the pack. I can't wait to get planting. How to restore IE6 from IE8

Its usually pretty simple,, just close your browser and any instant messaging programs and go to add/remove programs in control panel and double click ie8. You might want to read the microsoft support article for XP. Here is a link that might be useful: Microsoft Support - Uninstall IE8

The difference between success and failure could still be the browsers. IE is more intensive on resources than FF. If you feel like experimenting do a C-A-D and end everything but Explorer and System Tray. Then try IE and shutdown. What brand is the system? HP at one time had a sound driver/Win98 conflict with shutdown. You might want to try the Windows 98 Help search word "troubleshoot" (sans quotes). Without going out to the garage to verify, my recollection is there is a Startup and Shutdown troubleshooter in Win98. Also, my recollection is SFC will identify changed and corrupt files, but unless you can find the specific file in the Windows .inf folder you will need a Win98 disk to extract it from to repair. I would immediately be removing all those darn toolbars most can be done through add remove programs. I hate it when there are so many you can barely have enough real estate for viewing a webpage. But you sure can go back to IE7 just make sure you continue to get all your critical windows updates for IE7. also if you do choose to keep it you can change the address bar back to how it was in earlier versions of IE I have posted that tip here on a few threads but if you can not find it just either ask or google make IE8 look like Ie7 or IE6 there are a lot of things you can change to make it look more familiar, changing the look to the classic menu will be one easy change.

Just skip 7, but make sure your computer meets the recommended system requirements for it before you install. It could run REALLY slowly.

Groan. This doesn't sound good. I am perfectly happy with IE6 and have no problems anywhere--except ancestry.com which I use a lot so it really does matter. They have constant pop-ups telling me to go to IE8 and darken the page I'm working on, thus disabling it. And to think I am paying a pretty hefty sum for this annoyance.

Either go directly to IE8 (I've found IE7 to be slow and buggy), or install Firefox, which is a better browser than IE in my opinion. Firefox is similar to IE in many ways, but less trouble-prone and is fully compatible with any web site I've visited. It is also better at stopping annoying pop-up ads.

Going from IE6 to IE8 is really no big deal though you will have to learn some new services. Just be patient and enjoy the learning experience. As an extra bonus IE8 is also more secure.

Inevitably you would have to upgrade down the road so why not do it now?

As an alternative, K's suggestion in regards to Firefox is a good one which I totally support.
