Can I go directly from IE 6 to IE 8?

I am still using IE 6 and am fine with it but ancestry.com keeps harrassing me to update to IE 8. Can I go directly from IE 6 to IE 8 or do I need to first go to IE7? Are there problems with this process? I am not highly skilled in computer matters.

Running XP SP3.

You might consider going to IE7 first and get use to it. IE 8 does not play well with xp in some cases. To answer your question yes you could.

You will see some differences in the interface between IE6 and IE7orIE8. IE8 is more like 7 than 6, so maybe Zep's suggestion to go with IE7 first, to get used to it is a good idea. The the change to IE8 will not be so great.

I can't use the back arrow more than twice in a row without having IE6 close. Java can't update, and I can't copy or paste or use my email tools from Charter. It does crazy things like bring up infinite search windows from time to time (until I manually turn the computer off). I have to delete my temporary files manually, the buttons don't have any results under Internet Options. My FTP site is not accessible. IE6 is closing increasingly, yet I have less trouble with software than I've ever had before. Morrowind is a CDTer and most people get anywhere from 20 minutes to an hour of play before a CDT, but I can play for hours. The problems are all centered around this IE6 rollback from IE7. All my virus scans are negative, as well as searching for rootkits. This IE6 never did work as it was supposed to...I can't get rid or it unless I start over, and I don't have the time! this is the site with all the directions on how to prepare for the install of sp3 on your computer. Turning off all antivirus programs and any other running programs prior to install. Definitely create a restore point before installing, but should something go wrong before using the restore point you want to go into add remove programs and look for and remove sp3. Trying to remove a service pack by using a restore point can cause a mis mash of old and new. All's well that ends well. I thought v6.0 was the first version compliant with the federal anti-trust law suit agreement that IE could be removed sucessfully from Windows. Again dusting off an old brain cell or two, wasn't it at this time the creation of the Microsoft update site came into existence as an alternative to the on-board Windows update utility configured through IE? This of course being done so users could update Windows without being mandated to retain IE. DA

Just skip 7, but make sure your computer meets the recommended system requirements for it before you install. It could run REALLY slowly.

Groan. This doesn't sound good. I am perfectly happy with IE6 and have no problems anywhere--except ancestry.com which I use a lot so it really does matter. They have constant pop-ups telling me to go to IE8 and darken the page I'm working on, thus disabling it. And to think I am paying a pretty hefty sum for this annoyance.

Either go directly to IE8 (I've found IE7 to be slow and buggy), or install Firefox, which is a better browser than IE in my opinion. Firefox is similar to IE in many ways, but less trouble-prone and is fully compatible with any web site I've visited. It is also better at stopping annoying pop-up ads.

Going from IE6 to IE8 is really no big deal though you will have to learn some new services. Just be patient and enjoy the learning experience. As an extra bonus IE8 is also more secure.

Inevitably you would have to upgrade down the road so why not do it now?

As an alternative, K's suggestion in regards to Firefox is a good one which I totally support.
