Thanks for the link Gary.... I have chatted with the owner of that firm who supplies that link several times and amazingly he is pretty open and pretty helpful to guys calling him from the Internet! He said he suspected the main cpu board. I agree with you that it's likely to be one board or the other! Once I defrosted and drained the visibly streaming water from the control panel, those buttons began clicking nicely though the on and off button never worked. I'm pretty sure the buttons are impervious to water reaching the contacts, though it is nearly certain that there was some frozen condensation in there which stopped the buttons from clicking. You could feel they were stiff. I think the board and most components are covered in epoxy so there seems like little risk of moisture damage, as best I can tell! All the contacts appear clean. It's a shame that there is no trouble shooting guide for the main control board., and no explanation of what might be those R and F error codes! As I mentioned, at one point, and for a little while, I did see the service message, and the likely error codes of E and F. Gosh only knows what that meant, anyway!!! After all the drying out and powering up and down and moving the connectors on and off to improve the contacts, I finally ended up with the unit off, and could never get it to come on again. Sometimes the crazy icemaker light would briefly show on, and then off - even without pressing that button at all. You could hear a relay clicking. They say it's "lonely at the top". I would paraphrase that, and say that "it's lonely to work on a crazy subzero and get no help from the manufacturer." I'm told they refuse to give advise, except to authorized service centers. There is an ending to all these stories, thankfully, and I will post the answer.

geo and maire ... thanks for the comments. antss ... LOL ... thank you! ... the deal is 47% off retail price on the 700TC. I had not planned on looking at the 27" 700 series at all due to price and staying with the BI-48S as the storage capacity is comparable to installing two 27" side by side. However, with being able to purchase one of the 27" at a (to me) considerable savings, it puts back into budget the combination. And I much prefer the integrated look of the 700. On the icemaker (and I understand that the information may be incorrect), some earlier threads (2005ish) were having issues with the icemaker breaking repeatedly. I know that ice and water are problematic to begin with ... just didn't know if this particular unit had experienced (or is still experiencing) more problems than average. Thanks for any response. @opaonePurchased and installed in 2013. We have two side by side. One of the freezer arms will not stay in the off position and you have to remember to reach in and manipulate if you want ice. The other freezer is fine. We have had them here 3 times to repair it and they say it is fine. We would also have build up of frost. Bad heating element in freezer has been replaced. The have had to remount the compressor unit most recently. The most annoying problem is that you will open the fridge one day and water is all over the bottom of refrigerator and leaking out. The refrigerator "drains" clog and it causes quite a mess and I have to then have them come out for repairs to take it apart in order to get to the drains. It is always a service charge of $90 just to show up and then the labor and parts usually has it add up from anywhere between $180-400. When they were still under warranty Subzero would pay for the parts.

i've prepaid (to secure the old cost before the rate hike next month) for my BI-30U, to be delivered in early-january when demo begins. i also wanted the 650 because i didn't want the icemaker in the fridge, which is how all BI's come now. but the local store said they couldn't guarantee locating one...which should mean the BI's are available now, i would think.
