Sub Zero 700TC versus BI-48S

I have an opportunity to purchase the 27" Ref/Freezer combo no icemaker at a substaintial savings from the Sub Zero/Wolf living kitchen. I would pair it with the 27" Ref/Freezer combo with icemaker from my local dealer. The combination would exceed my original planned purchase of the BI-48S by more than $2K, but I would gain a LITTLE on capacity and have a more integrated (non-grill) aesthetic in the kitchen.

Any advice or reasons to stick with the tried and true top compressor model versus the bottom compressor? And does anyone know if the concerns with the icemaker in the 700TC has been corrected?

Regardless of brand, there are at least 2 considerations as to top vs. bottom compressor.
1) The obvious: the bottom compressor raises (vis-a-vis the floor) the usable storage area, the top compressor lowers it.
2) The not so obvious: if you have shedding pets that spend time in the kitchen, the bottom compressor is not necessarily a good idea.

We've had a 501 R and a 501 F since 1988 and in those 22 years we've had 4 dogs - big, hairy rottweilers who for some odd reason liked to lay in front the the bottom vents. I just made a point of vacuuming and brushing the coils every 2 or 3 months. We had the dogs before the Sub Zeros so I have no idea how much cleaner the condenser coils would be without them.

I'm so accustomed to the grills at the bottom where they are less noticeable that when I visit my neighbor who has a Sub Zero with the grills on the top and they just seem to scream out "Hey I'm a Sub Zero - look at me!" Plus my cabinets are a dark cherry so they'd be very noticeable. I just hope mine last for many more years.

Hi what was your resolution? We also just got a brand new 18” Column freezer and it runs almost constantly and so very noisy. We’ve had technician out three times. They replaced the control board but nothing changed. We’re really hose to have spent $9K on a freezer that never shuts off. We can even hear it downstairs.

i've prepaid (to secure the old cost before the rate hike next month) for my BI-30U, to be delivered in early-january when demo begins. i also wanted the 650 because i didn't want the icemaker in the fridge, which is how all BI's come now. but the local store said they couldn't guarantee locating one...which should mean the BI's are available now, i would think.

Thanks for all the comments!! Re price, the models I'm looking at are comparable to SubZero and Gaggenau. Turns out there's a new Miele showroom, so I went there today, but they didn't have the 30" freezer. What I did learn (as those of you who have them know) is that the fridge door holders come out of their rims like the wire ones in the freezer do. Also, that the shelves (the rims) remove by sliding them to the top. This rail system is very secure, but that's why the pieces come out--so you can clean easily without removing all of them. Tommy, thanks for the custserv review! Thanks, Lucypwd, for the answer about the deli drawer. I've been very confused about that. The "floating" drawer seems to be in the 36" over under, where it's small and slides back and forth under a shelf. David, I don't know of my own experience, but all of the literature calls the lights halogens, and the guy at the showroom called them "appliance halogens". Maybe they really are LEDs, but that's not what they say. I also found out that the columns are identical in every size, just wider. Has anyone seen the 30" freezer? Does the icemaker extend all the way across? Or is there some kind of storage next to it? Canuck, I guess you might not have had your SZ for long enough to really know, but have you noticed the ethylene filter working? One more good I learned is that, according to the rep, the kit for installing the units next to each other is a heat shield, and works no matter which direction they open. (SZ have to open armoire style.) They also told me that having a Miele certified installer do the installation doubles the warranty. Re construction, the rep said that while the box, compressors, and other big parts are made in the Turkay plant, the electronics are made by Miele in Germany. He said that they spent 7 years developing the American style refrigerators. That sounds like so much marketing but is probably pretty true. I'm pretty convinced to go with the 30" and 30". I can stand dealing with the kind of issues Lucy is having, if necessary (I was in the showroom for the better part of an hour, and they had three fridges and two freezers running, and all were practically silent, so I'm hoping your tech can fix yours). And I like the sizes and fitments better than on any other units I've seen. More comments are surely welcome. :)

We've had such a good experience with our Sub Zeros that we just ordered the 42" French door Sub Zero for the kitchen at our next home. Currently I have a 36" all Refrigerator and a 36" all Freezer. They are now 29 years old and going strong. We did have some of the typical problems in the early years - my ice maker worked fine, but every now and then I had ice build up in the back. Since it was out of warranty I used a hair dryer to melt the ice but that got annoying. When I called my local repair company they called Sub Zero from my house and discussed the problem. Sub Zero offered to cover the part and I paid for labor. It's now worked fine for over 20 years. The compressor only had a 5 year warranty when I bought the freezer in 1988. And of course it died in year 7 - again my local repair guy called SZ - and again they covered the parts while I paid labor. My impatient 10 year old son tried to force the freezer door open after it had just shut - anyone who knows SZ knows that when you close it, you have to wait a few seconds for the pressure to equalize before opening it again. Well he managed to break the metal handle. I called SZ and after the customer service rep laughed he asked if I had been entertaining a frat party at my home. I told him it was my 10 year old and that I had witnessed it. He immediately told me he'd send me a new handle - no charge. Well this same kid (who is now an impatient adult) managed to break off the handle on the refrigerator a year later. Again I called SZ - however by this time they had changed the style of the handle. The customer service rep not only send me a new handle for free - he also sent a new one for the freezer so that I would have matching handles. Their customer service has been fantastic. That's the reason we ordered another one from them. I know I'm going to miss my 301 R and 301 F when we move . We're empty nesters and down sizing and I don't need or even have room for those big units - but DH and I both love to cook and we often make large casseroles and freeze meals for our kids. The 42" should work fine for us.

....................then you're not getting as good a deal as you think on the 700TC !

antss ... LOL ... thank you! ... the deal is 47% off retail price on the 700TC. I had not planned on looking at the 27" 700 series at all due to price and staying with the BI-48S as the storage capacity is comparable to installing two 27" side by side. However, with being able to purchase one of the 27" at a (to me) considerable savings, it puts back into budget the combination. And I much prefer the integrated look of the 700.

On the icemaker (and I understand that the information may be incorrect), some earlier threads (2005ish) were having issues with the icemaker breaking repeatedly. I know that ice and water are problematic to begin with ... just didn't know if this particular unit had experienced (or is still experiencing) more problems than average.

The 700 series icemaker is a pretty standard design that lots of manuf. use and I am not aware of any problems.

The BI-48 and it's SxS predecessors are the SZ units that have problems and it's not so much with the ice maker itself but the complicated and cumbersome delivery system to get that stuff into the fridge door from the freezer. These units almost always have problems over their lifespan.

If you're in the dual fully integrated market you should look a the offerings from Thermador Freedom and Miele before you buy something.

Thanks everyone ... my first choice when starting to research was the Thermador Freedom columns. That is until I saw them in person ... I LOVED the inside layout, finishes, etc ... but I felt so short in front of them (I'm 5' tall)and could not reach the top shelf easily (yes I did play with the top shelf hydrolic feature). The Miele were even worse in that regard. The 700's are higher than I would prefer, but not as bad as the Miele and Therms.

I've been looking at the 700 series and the BI series lately. About a week ago, a sales rep told me that the 700 series R/F will soon be getting an interior update that matches the 700 series towers which are more like the BI interior. (Antss, please correct me if this is wrong) Personally, I like the BI interiors better than the 700. Functionally, there is not much produce/bin storage in the 700 and aesthetically, they are not as bright and clean looking as the newer BI interiors.

the 700 series is due for an update much like the new BI series changed/improved the 6xx line. I have not heard about a cosmetic change to the current platform but I suppose it would be the logical band-aid until the new lien arrives. I have not heard a rollout date for any of this and I'm sure it would be 12 mo. easy before you could put your hands on anything in your house and even longer for the new series.

If you need a fridge now , I would wait on a maybe.

Antss, not sure I understand....is the issue w the BI series w the in door ice/water dispenser?

If so are the units with no dispenser problem free/ less problematic?

If I'm not understanding would appreciate insight into any issues with the BI-48

Ice/water in the door from SubZero = trouble, almost guaranteed. Those without are some of the best units the industry has to offer.

N.B. - the fridges with the ice/water in the door are fine too, IT'S THE ICE AND WATER IN THE DOOR that's the problem.

Ice/water in the door from other makers historically has more problems than those without. They are just complex and prone to breakage.

Oh, meant to say I would NOT wait on a maybe.
