Security Settings - Restricted Sites

My security is set at Med High, which suits my surfing just fine. Not so restrictive as to be a problem, but safe enough to keep out most unwanted sites. Having a 14 year old granddaughter using my computer has brought on a different set of problems and I now see it would be good to be able to restrict a couple of sites. Sooo, if I click Restricted Sites, can I restrict only a couple of sites without the security level going up or does it have to be one way or the other? I am using XP

the very best solution for this situation with your grand daughter is to just set up a new user account for her in user accounts and set it up as a limited user there fore she can not accidentally install anything on your pc and if she should surf to a site that tries to install something it will not since she is not running on the admin account. I have guest accounts on my pc for anytime anyone wants to use my pc they never get to touch my admin account ever. And of course create a good strong password for your admin account that no one can guess so they do not use your account.

Start> control panel> user accounts> create new account.

Idaf you did not mention what type of browser you are using is it IE and if so which one or firefox and if so which one?

Thanks ravencajun for the response. Actually, my son who works away from home has a user account on my computer and he told me this week I just needed to delete it because my computer is so slow and he doesn't really need it anymore. Neither of us had a password and we respected each other's privacy. The problem with the grandaughter is not installing programs, but rather searching for stuff she hears about at school. I was shocked and amazed to see what she has searched for. Most of these questions she has should be directed towards her mother instead of Urban Dictionary and Google! Ida

Wow, what an exciting thread. From reading your post, toyon, you could work with me on the border. I'm an Agricultural Inspector at the Truckee Border Station. You've given a lot of, and good advise here. For the most part, the plants named at the beginning of this thread are not resitricted, but as has been said earlier in this post, it's mostly about the soil. If you can bare root the plants, they should be o.k. to bring in. That being said, if you enter CA, and an inspector notices signs of disease or other pest, the plants may be confescated right there... We always try to encourage any new resident who is transporting plants to CA, to contact their County Agricultural Commissioner, not just for inspection, but, if you can begin discussion with them, they may be able to help you with future plant/pest questions. I did want to respond to the cactus question, however. The only restrictions on cacti from AZ...and interior regulations in CA, is the type of cactus. There are endangered species of cactus in our surrounding areas. If the cactus is purchased by a reputable dealer, and has an accompanying certificate, there should really be no problem, the problem comes from digging up potentially endangered species. It is great for me to read a thread that has so much support for the border inspectors and our purpose. Sometimes we feel that much of CA doesn't really know what we do out here, or why. Randy, Thanks for your reply...really appreciate your taking the time to do that. I do have Firefox set to clear all private data upon closing the browser, and am glad to hear you have confidence that it does so. I have an older version of Window Washer and it does the job on IE, but it doesn't contain the option to add Firefox. I understand that newer versions do. I hadn't heard of CCleaner, but you have me curious now so I may check it out. Thanks again for your help Hal

I solved the problem, but only by uninstalling IE7, checking settings in the restored IE6 (they were all set to Custom), was able to restore IE6 settings to default because the choice was still there. Then, I downloaded IE7 again and installed, and now all is well. I had Googled my problem, but none of the sites I found addressed the particular problem I was having. This took quite a while, but I'm thinking something must have been amiss with either the original installation of IE7 or one of the later updates. Yes, Mikie, I do have adminstrator rights, but none of the "easy" things would fix it. This is on my laptop, and I checked my desktop and everything was as it should be, with sliders and all. At least, "ALL'S WELL THAT ENDS WELL".

For those few users of Outlook 2002, I got one or two updates from the Microsoft update site for Outlook 2002. I think it/they addressed the security problem related to interactions between Outlook and IE7 restricted sites. Outlook 2002, has been working fine, and IE7 has been busy re-populating the restricted site list, I also returned Outlook to HTML, from RTF, and Outlook is still working fine. There is no noticeable delay in typing input for reply to incoming messages.

Sorry! I missed your question. I have IE7. When my computer came home from the repair shop, it had FireFox installed on it. I never even tried it, always thinking I would someday. Ida
