Anyone choose to not have a formal dining room?
Comments (34)Our plan has a formal dining, but we are going to use it as a piano/reading room. Instead we're going to use what was labeled as a hearth room for our dining area. It's plenty large enough(19'x15') to accomodate a big table for our family of 10 and is totally open to the kitchen. I like that I'll be able to be working in the kitchen with my older girls while my younger ones are in plain eyesight/earshot at the table doing schoolwork/crafts. We are informal, casual people, and having a separate, really formal dining space just isn't us, nor is it our friends and family. It's still under construction, but here's a shot of our future dining area(the "hearth" room). The original house plan called for a fireplace to the right, but we nixed it as there is one just around the corner in the living room and instead opted for a big window that looks out over our pond and trees. I'm planning on a hutch between the 2 big windows. French doors will lead to a grilling porch and the other door will lead to a deck.. eventually ;-)....See MoreDoes Anyone Have Mismatched Dining Chairs
Comments (6)That does look nice, kats, and I appreciate your showing those to me. I think the key for me (and for you) is that the chairs have similar lines and are the same color. In my case, I'll paint them ebony. Just hoping I can find more chairs like the one I have. By the way, I wiped the dust from the chair last night, and painted it with ebony shoe polish intended for leather! I did this once before on a wooden mirror and the results were fantastic. I'm so happy with the results. The chair has a beautiful finish, that isn't shiny but looks like a fine antique which has been polished with paste wax. If you don't want a shiny finish, or even a flat paint finish on your chairs, use shoe polish. It works beautifully....See MoreDoes anyone have wood burning fireplace in kitchen?
Comments (18)I had a kitchen with a fireplace, similar to the layout in your picture. When I stood at the island, I was facing the fireplace. There were stools on the fireplace side of the island but several feet away from the fireplace. I used the fireplace, mostly when I entertained and it was really nice. When I built an addition, mostly open to the kitchen with the fireplace, I decided to move the kitchen into the addition and keep the detailed room with the fireplace as the dining room. It makes a great dining room but I no longer use the fireplace. The dining table is in front of the fireplace and it's uncomfortably hot. It wasn't really a loss for me as I have a fireplace in the adjoining living room which I continue to use. Personally I would prefer the fireplace in a sitting room but I don't know your trade-offs in terms of improved layout. How long do you plan to live there? Would you be decreasing the value of the fireplace by having it in the kitchen? Do you like using the fireplace? Do you use it now? Will you use it the same way if it is in the kitchen? Will you be able to layout the kitchen so the fireplace remains useful?...See MoreAnyone have the Jessica Mclintock dining room or living room set?
