experience with Thermador all refrig and all freezer ?

Hi everyone,

Help.... I am still pondering on which refrigerator. I am replacing my 30 yr old sub-zero, but don't want to spend the money for another sub-zero. Have looked at Electrolux, Northland and now the 30" Thermador T301r70NSP. All Refrig and all Freezer. Does anyone have any experience with either of these ?

hard to beat a SZ particularly with your track record with it. Mine is 21 years old and I would replace it in a minute. I realize that does not answer your question.

Not uncommon for any of the older fridges to last 20 years or longer, I have had Gibsons,GE, some I can't even remember and never had a service call on any of them, alto the GE Ice thru the door conked out, as most do, didn't bother repairing it, The Jenn-air I bought in 2006, for less than half the price of the SZ has many more (Important to me)-- features than did the SZ in 2006 and quieter too due to the variabls speed compressor.

I want to put a follow up on this thread. The GE Monogram all fridge all freezer units we purchased are both giving us problems that, according to the independent service technician, are showing up in more and more older models. In other words as the units age they develop these issues. I guess we are "lucky" in that they happened while we were still in warranty. First, the fridge was getting moldy. Mold was growing on the walls, shelves and even condiment containers and other containers that potentially are in the fridge for a while. I am cleaning the fridge every weekend, spending a couple hours at a time on it. Turns out that GE considers this within normal functioning parameters as the fridge is still getting cold enough. It is also developing rust. According to the technician - there is no fix for this. Second, the freezer is growing BIG hunks of frost on the back wall and according to the same technician this is indicative of "something big about to happen" although he refused to elaborate. So now I have two built in, custom panelled appliances purchased with the intent that they last MANY years and which will now need to be replaced. Be warned - stay away or if you must go with this line - at least go in with your eyes open.

Any Experiences With Miele Refrig-Freezers ???

In the past year we've bought a Miele washer, dryer, dishwasher, and K1801 refrigerator. The fridge hasn't worked properly since we got it three months ago. The ice maker didn't work, so they replaced it, but the replacement didn't fix the problem. Also, when we open the door there's a loud buzzing noise like an alarm, and the lights flash intermittently. Presumably these problems can be solved, and most people shouldn't expect to have them. The real problem is the service. Miele seems to have poor inventory of spare parts in North America, and in three service calls they've never had what we need. They have to send to Europe for parts, which can take two weeks to arrive. Add in the time to schedule installation and you can expect to be without your appliance for a long time. I wasn't expecting to need service so soon, and most people don't, but if you plan to own your fridge for 10 years I'd plan on being without it for a couple of months in that time. Fortunately we have a second fridge and can manage, but if we were to pick only one fridge Miele wouldn't be it.

I wrote in this forum seven years ago about the Frigidaire all-freezer and all-refrigerator combo. We installed them as past of a major condo remodel - and have been TOTALLY happy with our choice. They are cabinet depth with zero clearance - a big deal for us. We find the refrigerator space "adequate," though a hidden benefit of the less-deep shelves is that we have no biology experiments molding away undiscovered in the back! The freezer space is awesome! Not to mention the jaw-dropping looks we get when visitors first enter our kitchen! Again, it's seven years later, and we have not had one single issue with the pair. If we build a new house, the kitchen will be planned around this same Frigidaire combo. Not sure the Electrolux-branded pair are worth the extra $$$, as they also make the Frigidaire units

As far as energy use goes Northland supplies a table in their documentation that estimates energy consumption of the unit as a function of ambient temperature. What the table says and how much energy the fridge actually consumes are sometimes two very different things. CR has caught Samsungs using significantly more that their table suggest and Viking using outrageously more than their table says. CR has been beating the drum for the Feds to check more carefully and throw the book at those manufactures that don't comply with what they are reporting to the public. I have read some Northland owners say their fridge falls into that Viking territory. But temperature performance is top notch.

I was looking at built in refrigerators today. The dealer told me that whatever I buy - including Subzero - that I should expect the appliance to last 8 - 10 years. That is what they are built for today. I own a 25 year old Kitchen Aid and am having a hard time justifying the big dollars for an appliance with a 10 year life span.

Thanks everyone for the feedback. I think I would like the Thermador, but now hear my store has a set of 30" Northland in their warehouse and they will sell for $2,500 less than the Thermador. Since money is tight and a couple posts say they like the Northland, I'll go that way. The Electrolux seems to have a problem with the thermostat that has yet to be solved. deeebert, I most likely would've gone with SZ again, but they are too costly for me at this time.
