How fast will my AT&T connect get?

I switched from dialup to the 875U card about a year ago. I am now getting downloads as fast as 30 kbs. Although that isn't as fast as cable it sure beats the 3 to 4 kbs I got with dialup. What is the fastest anyone here as managed to download with the AT&T card? Thanks.

I don't know any thing about speed numbers, but I have used Juno dial up, SBC and cable internet servers. SBC's (now ATT) was good enough for me, but didn't like the $5. per month every year hike increase while they were still offering the $14.95 to get others to join and I didn't like the bundling thing. Now I am using cable's least expensive internet and it's fine with me. My total phone bill, internet and TV comes to $109. a month and the internet is fast enough for me.

I have the Sierra 595U and usually get 13-20kbs downloads. It beats dial up by a mile for me!

I don't think your laptop has HDMI out but it does have S-video out, correct? You could probably pickup an S-video cable pretty cheaply. Here's a video which I didn't actually watch but it looks like it probably explains how to do exactly what you want to do: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3vz-_wsrsAY Personally, I just run a regular monitor cord(male on both ends) between my desktop computer and my TV. Assuming your Panasonic has PC input, that may be an option. As for enabling multiple displays, that should be covered in the video? Hehe, yeah, good nose owbist. I understand it's possible to report SPAM but I'm much too lazy. Forum needs a "Report as SPAM" button but I suppose it will probably never get it.

Hi albert, Thank-you for the compliment. I have learned from experience. Here are 2 more things to think about; My son decided that he was going to sign up on-line for free groceries. He used my phone #. Well, after clicking whatever looked interesting to him in the ads that led him to the initial regeristering for the free groceries, they had sent payment requests as 3rd party billings to Verizon. I learned fast about 3rd party blocks. And, several years ago, maybe 15, I had recieved my phone bill. It had a charge on there for the amount of over $800. I called the phone company, and they told me that I was responsible, because someone had used the phone from my house to call some Entertainment Hotline! The call was placed at 04:30!!? No one at this time would have been awake at my house. All the teenagers were elsewhere at the time,also. I had them redirect the bill back to where it came from, to get it off my bill, which they did. I never did recieve the bill from whoever it was returned to. But, a few months later, I found out from the TV Program 20/20 that people were capable of obtaining your home phone through a dial-up system on their computer that would dial your number at random, connect when you answered, and copy the number to be used at a later time for their personal enjoyment. I assume that I will have to change my remote id from Comcast back to the remote that originally came with my TV. Are we talking about the remote control for the television? If so, it is the remote that's programmed to work with the TV, not the other way around. Although some "universal" remotes can be iffy with advanced features, so you may be best using the original remote control for the TV. If the TV is Internet enabled and you want to use a wireless connection, then the SSID and password (if security is enabled) must match that of the new router. Of course, you could change the SSID and password of the new router to match the old router. Also I have a second tv upstairs that I would want to also use this wireless connection. Would I just have to buy a second modem/router and use the same software that I would get from AT&T. No. One of the functions of the router is to distribute the Internet connection to computers and devices in your home via wired and/or wireless connections. Again the upstairs TV would need to be programmed to the correct SSID and password. Also I have a second computer about a mile away that I would want to hook up to this same wireless connection also. Again I assume I would just need another modem/router and use the same software once again. That would be problematic. WiFi just doesn't have that kind of range nor could you run a mile long Ethernet cable. You'd likely need a second service from AT&T. I don't know about Earthlink. Most ISP's give you a free email account (or in some cases, multiple accounts) with service. You will need to ask Earthlink what happens to your email account if you discontinue their service. They may allow you to keep the email account active for a small monthly fee. AT&T will give you a free email account with their service as well. You may wish to just migrate or use one of the free services like Gmail or Hotmail and not be tied to the ISP.

the 100Mbps is not telling you your internet speed connection it is simply telling you the ability of your router, most today are 10/100Mbps rated. This might help you understand that 10/100 devices mine also says 100 there likely everyone in here would have 100 there too. cox has multiple tiers of service you pay x amount of money for x amount of speed you would need to check your contract to know which tier you are paying for to know if you are getting the proper speed. I am also on cox and if you look way up in this old post you will see my speed test which is much much faster than yours so I would assume you have a lower tier of internet service with them. I do not have any other services with them so I have no bundle just strictly internet.

I went to PC Pitstop and did a Download Bandwidth test. The results stated:

Download speed: 40 kilobits per second

I have just regular dialup - it sounds much better than the results listed above. Do I just have an exceptionally good connection?

I am beyond the reach of DSL. I also don't have the cable option. Sattelite is to $$ for what I want. I have thought about the cell phone type air cards - is that what you are using above? It doesn't sound that great if it is.

If I am way off base - please let me know.

I don't think you understand the difference between connection and download transfer speed. If you go to a site that tests your internet speed you will find that your download and upload speeds are only a fraction of your connection speed. For example here is what I got on one test.

Your current download speed is: 189.00kbps

which means you can download at 23.63 KB/sec from our servers.

Seems to me Iowagirl's confusion is caused by the difference between b (bits) and B (bytes).
1 Byte = 8 bits, so your 40 Kilobits per second = 5 KiloBytes per second. the distinction between bits and bytes has caused lots of confusion.

Ah - thank you Bob. I was not taking into consideration the difference between b & B. Thanks for taking the time to explain. I learned something new today :)

So the OP's download time is actually 30 KiloBytes and mine is 40 KiloBits - correct?

That makes more sense now that I think about it.

I do understand the difference between connection speed and download speed.

On another note - has anyone been hearing anything about "White Space" internet? That is the possiblility of using unused (after February 2009) TV airwaves to broadcast an internet signal.

It would certainly be awesome for rural customers, like me, who have limited internet access.

I just went to PC Pitstop and tested speed...download is at 219kbps and upload (168 kbps). This is an aircard, similar to a cell phone and I use it because I live in a rural area beyond DSL service. I took the numbers that I posted above from my Windows Update which was running at that time.

but I get quite a bit faster on some days, they are supposed to up me to the 10/5 level and have not done it yet, I need to call and remind them not that I really need any faster but since they changed the rates it was supposed to up the speed too.
