good anti virus program

My computer came with Trend Micro & I've always kept it. But computer guy says it's wothless & recommended Kaspersky. I have a trial version of this on here. I think it caused my computer to go so slow with the 1 GB ram.

I'm wondering if I should go with the paid Kaspersky or is there something else I should consider?

Before I sent it in, I also had the free Malware Bytes on it. But,I was a bit lax on running this.

Avast, AVG, MSE. It is a user's preference just like Ford, GM or Chrysler

When I get home I will attach the recent report from Virus Bulletin so you can make an informed decision.

Sapphires you might consider changing from Zonealarm in the near future because it no longer supports your Windows 98. This does not have the same urgency as changing your anti virus but should be done at some point. Comodo, linked below, is very similar to Zonealarm in that it pops up near the clock when looking for permission or denial. There are other free firewalls just as good of course. I use this on my main computer along with their anti virus. A word of caution though if you use the Comodo anti virus, for some reason Windows XP refuses to recognise it and tells me I am exposed. I have used the free PC Pitstop for years. It was a great program but a succession of "improvements" seem to have removed a lot of the advantages in my opinion. While buying computer parts I was offered the $39 program for free and took it, based on what I felt it did I would not be paying money for it. PC Matic seems to belong to PC Pistop. Never heard of Evensoft till your post. Cnet has offered this (amongst hordes of other sites of course) and in 14 months has had a mere 17,527 downloads with user rating 3 out of 5. Hardly a hit in my mind. It also cleans the registry which you should not be doing, registry cleaners are bad business unless the person knows what they are doing.

I attempted to remove Trend Micro per instructions of Ravencajun. It was a most complicated process and I finally gave up on it when I "unzipped" 22 folders half a dozen times and the same unzip box reappeared. Finally, I cancelled all of this incomprehensible stuff and went to the simple "add/remove" option that is part of my Windows program. I clicked on "remove", and it indicated I had about 70mb of Trend Micro stuff, and asked was I sure I wanted to remove. Yes, of course. The green progress bar (made up of little squares) ran in its box for ahile, I was asked to reboot, and it seemed like that was the end. I rebooted and looked in my files for traces of Trend Micro, and could only find a few titles with 0kb content. I deleted these titles. The Trend Micro icons are gone. Am I rid of it? Seems like I am. How to check? RB

I personally use the free AVAST but have installed the free MSE for others both are great choices.

Just make sure you use the proper tools to remove the antivirus programs on the pc now because you can have real problems if there is more than one. Most AV companies have a special removal tool.

If he put the trial version of Kaspersky on I sure hope he fully removed the Trend Micro first. IF not you will need to fully remove both of those.

Using appremover may be your best bet and would be what I would do.

damccoy,your mention of car choices makes it clear to me. I will await the Virus Bulletin.
Raven,HE didn't install anything. I installed the trial Kaspersky.I was going to put Trend M back until he said it wasn't any good.I did not uninstall Trend Micro. I thought it was taken off when he wiped everything off.I have looked all over for it & see no traces of it.
If there is a free one that works it would be OK Guess I always thought paid was bound to be best. Doris

Here's the link for the VB Results Summary. Don't let a single failure scare you off. You are looking for reoccurring failures or regular lack of submissions.

On the left of the page near to the top is the titled VB 100 Results Summary. Just below it is Previous. Clicking on Previous will take you to prior results than the page link presents.

Admittedly the site can get a bit deep at times, but I recommend bookmarking it for reading. A user would be surprised what they can learn from a site such as this.
