Built-in toaster oven??

I posted a related message under a different heading and did not get many responses. We are getting a 24" Gaggenau combi steam/convection oven and want to do a built-in toaster-oven that I can wall mount over or under this gagg oven. It may seem strange to do this wall mounted but I don't want to see a toaster oven on my countertop and as I said going by use, we seem to use this little toaster oven very frequently in our kitchen. We don't have or use a microwave oven. To get a built in look, I will even consider putting it on a pull out tray if I have to. I am looking for a higher end, better-built toaster oven than the cheap De Longhi one I have right now. Although it works fine, I think the heat generated by its walls may damage my cabinet if built in. Anyone done this before and/or can recommend a good brand.

I think you should look at building in an Advantium to replace your toaster oven. Does every thing it can and SOOOO much more.

I am assuming you mean it toasts too, correct? I know there are two models and have read a long post on the 120 versus 240. I guess I need to visit a showroom to see what these differences are in person. The only issue with these is that I don't really use a microwave and would be paying for that feature with these systems.

I am getting a gas cooktop; a gagg 30 inch convection oven; a gagg combi steam/convection oven; and need something else with small capacity to replace our humble toaster-oven. Thanks for your input.

When our 7 year old GE Profile over-the-range Microwave went out a few months ago, we wanted to get a convection/microwave unit so we would not longer need a Toaster Oven/Convection sitting on the counter taking up space. But we had to find one that would work in our space, as there is a full-granite backsplash that comes right up under the cabinets. The problem was finding a unit where the rear-wall template wouldn't have to be drilled into the granite. All of the KitchenAid/Whirlpool units were 17-18" down in the back, which would put them 2-3" down into the granite. So we ended up having to go with another GE and got the JVM1790SK for about $430 (it was only $60 more than the non-convection PVM1870SMSS). We've used it for about 2 weeks now and works good. Have done some convection baking and fast-bake (that uses both the Microwave and Convection together). So far the only thing that hasn't turned out grate was pizza, as it was still soft in the middle (not crispy). That's probably because there' no bottom heating element (there's just a 1550W coil on the right-side around the fan).

Goldgirl - We just replaced our 10 yo basic toaster oven (which did fine but was surely showing it's age) with a new Krups FBC1. Compared to our old TO this thing is amazing. It cooks so accurately. I don't know how else to say that. Our old TO just provided heat. It had a basic heating element. This thing seems to caress the food with heat, intelligently.... The heating elements surround the food and alternate giving the food time to 'catch up' Does that make any sense? The controls are intelligently laid out and work exactly the way I would expect them to. We haven't had it long enough to tell you anything about it's longevity but I would surely miss it if it was no longer here. I had no idea I could do so much with a toaster oven. It cleans up easily (for the occasional mishap). It's big enough for most things I would bake for just the two of us (not big enough for a full size chicken but 'parts' in a stoneware pan work just fine). And, by the way, it does a nice job with toast too... Hope this helps, Ken

We have a 240 wall version Advantium, & it can do all the grilled cheese, pizza, etc. stuff, much better than a toaster oven. There is no preheat with Advantium speedcooking. You will need a real toaster for toast; we bought a Braun.

Nothing is going to toast like a toaster. As for having a small oven that heats up quickly, most of the small higher end 240V models should meet this need. I have a 24" Miele speed oven, it is preheated to 400F in around 5 mins. The Miele steam oven should perform similarly in this regard. As for what specifically to get, it depends on your budget & layout. Ideally I'd like to have a full size oven, combi steam, and a MW (which could be a speed oven if budget allows). 2 full size ovens is probably unnecessary for the vast majority of people. Bosch makes a steam oven which I assume is very similar to the Thermador I have (the interior looks the same and the listed specs are more or less the same). I'd prefer the Miele version since its larger, can be plumbed, and has a few extra adjustments/modes if you can live with the mismatched appliances, but the Thermador (and I assume Bosch) is still good if you can't.

An Advantium also costs Soooo much more JC. I have never run across a built-in toaster over and would be very leery of trying to build in a standard unit. They have absolutely no insulation and need to be free standing to dissipate heat. If you built it in you would be trapping all that heat inside some cavity which could theoretically cause a fire. Besides without the trim and surrounds it wouldn't look built-in, it would look like a toaster over stuck in a hole in the wall.
