Opening the RAR files?

I received some zipped RAR files, wondering, if anyone can lead me down the SIMPLE path of opening, and putting them somewhere?

I have read the instructions, this stuff is way beyond me, the language is intense, and I can't figure out something this simple? Or it seems it should be?

Would there be anyone out there that can tell me the easy way to go about this?

I am using FF, and have lots of memory, not exact percentage, but plenty for this. I am just coming to FF after using IE for a long time, and have both programs on the machine.

I appreciate anyone stepping to the plate in this matter, I just can't process all the info I guess.

Download and install the free programme 7-Zip then right click on the rar file in explorer and "Extract to".

Appreciate your reply, forgot to tell you , I have the program for opening already on the machine, but not sure just what to do if and when I get the darned files opened?
Where do I extract them to, and how to do that is another question I guess.
Thanks for your reply tho, I am not used to asking a lot for help, always try and struggle thru on my own, this time is very confusing for me, can't get it in my head.

Ask the other person to save it as a Rich Text Format (RTF) document and send again, then you will be all set.

You think Adobe Reader is bloated or a resource hog? On my PC, currently active Chrome and Firefox instances each require over 200 megs of memory. No problem, well within the capability of any machine. Opening a large-ish PDF document in Adobe Reader required 20 megs. That's a trivial amount in my book I happily use Adobe Reader and have had no problems. There are times that I wish to perform certain steps (editing, form completion, etc) on PDF docs, I see no reason to risk having an issue by using a Brand X substitute. To each his own, most roads lead to Rome.

Lets in stall Adobe reader. See link below First on that webpage Put your mouse over the check mark on the optional offer. Click to un-check it, you don't need that. Optional offer: Yes, install free McAfee Security Scan Plus to check the status of my PC security. Then click in the lower right yellow Install now, that should download it to the desktop or your downloads folder, then double click it to install Adobe. Open WinRAR choose the "Extract to" button on the toolbar in the window that opens "Keep broken files" is on the bottom right under Miscellaneous. You could also try (from the drop down menu) "Repair archive (Alt+R)" but do this on a copy of the file. If will show error "the archive is either in unknown format or damaged" you're getting means that the file is corrupted, so it just cannot be repaired. But maybe the file is not completely corrupted and some part of the information can be saved. I think there will a RAR recovery items. If you want to try this tool RAR Recovery Toolbox

Forget all about Firefox and Internet Explorer for the time being because you aren't going to use them for this.

Open Windows Explorer and find these rar files that you want to open. Then right click on the first one e.g. "yourfilename".rar. Point to 7-Zip in the drop down menu and click on "Extract to yourfilename".

(I always use the same "folder name" as the "filename" so that I can easily see what has been extracted.)

A new folder called "Yourfilename" is created in the same place that you are already looking so you don't have to search for it. Inside this new folder will be the files that were originally stored inside the rar file.

Any quantity and type of file can be stored inside a rar file (they are just a convienient way of quickly sending lots of files in one go) e.g. bmp or jpg photos, an exe programme file, a doc Word file, etc.

Once you have extracted the file just use it in the normal way - you may want to move it to a more convienient folder later e.g. My Photos.

One other thing worth mentioning is to check the files with you antivirus programme before you run them in case the sender's computer was infected.

Colin, thanks for the info, my virus protection checks all incoming for me, so shouldn't be a problem, tho these days one never knows what is going on out there.
I have the insight I needed to do the deed, appreciate your assistance here greatly.
