Electrolux ICON fridge/freezer - No or Yes?

I have read all of the pros and mainly cons of these units. They are enticing since they look go and come in separate all units with a "built in" look. So, bottom line, is the product too much of a headache and should we stay away. Our first choice remains Thermador columns and second choice SZ BI36 units. It's just the Electrolux is so well priced.

I can not comment on the all fridge/freezer in specific, but I have the Icon 36" side by side. I have had it since July 4th 2008, and have had non of the common problems that seem to be reported on the earlier units. The unit looks fantastic, specially with our 48" Bluestar, in fact based on its aesthetic "style" it almost could be the same manufacturer. The handles are very similar, and both use blue exterior indicator lights. Overall I am pretty happy with the Icon. I would have preferred a Liebherr, but my kitchen appliance budget was getting way too close to the 20k mark so I had to make some compromises and the fridge is were I personally felt I could most easily compromise. Keep in mind however, that I have only had this fridge for a little more than 3 months, so long term reliability can not be commented on just yet.

Another datapoint. I bought the 36" side-by-side, and then read some of the negative stories reported here and elsewhere. Started to get "net panic" - I hear that there's a similar problem in medicine with everybody self-diagnosing themselves with cancer and brain tumors based on what they read on the web, but I digress.

I've had it for 3 months now with absolutely no problems.

Biggest negative is that it is really a dressed-up Frigidaire - At the store you can see lower-priced Frigidaire models that are functionally the same - water filter in same place, control panel with temp readout is the same etc, just that the shelves are not as snazzy, and of course much more commonplace in looks. So basically the Icon is a Frigidaire in Sub-Zero clothing.

But it looks great, price is right, and mine at least has been trouble-free, so why not?

Thank you so much for your input! I went to a showroom yesterday to see the Electrolux Icon set (the only one around Baltimore that had them on the floor!) I was really impressed with the quality and the layout. The Thermadors give up just two inches but that seems to make a difference in the layout (There are no shelves on the whole bottom half of the Therm too.) The *only* thing that somewhat bothers me is that I wish the ice machine was in the middle like the Therm or the GE Monograms because I have two daughters who can't reach or will pull the ice down on their head, but I could always put in a second container of ice down on a lower shelf given how much space is in the freezer! We are also getting an ice machine for a wet bar but I hate to think of 8- and 10-yr old hands going in it every time they want a drink! I've also heard good things about the Electrolux ovens and particularly like the roll-out racks which are included (and all extra for the Therm.) So, that pushes me towards the Electrolux as well. There's a nice rebate going on right now and I'm up to three items b/c the fridge and freezer are considered separate appliances. That's an $800 discount, need to investigate a couple other Electrolux appliances (have heard good things about the bev center, wine cooler and/or ice machine. Not sure about the dishwasher vs the others) because I could get it up to $1000. And, going with the Electrolux is certainly lower than the Therm even with the 1-2-Free deal, especially since it's not guaranteed to be the best products for my situation across the board. I emailed Electrolux just to make them aware. Or thought they might have a fix or new bin. Here's the email. Pretty much what I was doing... lol ***** Thanks for contacting Electrolux Major Appliances. We do regret that you are unhappy with the performance of your ice maker. We certainly understand how frustrating it can be to have to clean up an ice spill each time you open your freezer. The only resolution to your concern is to increase ice usage. If the ice is not being used frequently the bucket will fill up to the top which will allow the arm to knock the ice out of the of the bucket when the door is being open. You may also choose to turn the ice maker on and off once it has reached a certain production level. This will make the ice maker not fill the bucket up completely. After you have used a certain amount, you can then turn the ice maker back on so that it starts making ice again. We do again apologize for your inconvenience. We have the Kenmore Pro ones (like these) which I think are made by Frigidaire. (?) We've only had them installed for 2 months, but before that they sat for 2 years in our dirty garage -- long story -- so we were a little worried about how they would work after sitting for all that time but bottom line, no problems, and we're thrilled with them. For the price they can't be beat. There are two slightly odd things about them however. One is that there's no meat drawer, which I was used to in our other fridge and I do miss that. There are two HUGE drawers which I love having, but we fill one with fruits and the other with veggies, so then I just have meat on one the shelf above the drawers, which is okay but I would rather have a drawer for it. The second odd thing is that the shelf structure above the drawers are actually attached to the drawers themselves and they don't seem to come off for cleaning. The glass itself lifts out, but the surrounding shelf frame doesn't detach from the drawer (at least that we could figure out!) which makes it awkward for cleaning as you can't just turn it upside down into your sink and dump out fallen particles. Those are very minor inconveniences for the space and convenience (especially the freezer space which is incredible), and overall I love these appliances and I would get them again in a heartbeat.

Model # is E23BC68JPS for pro handles, or _JSS for curved desinger handles. Took very long hard look at this fridge. It looks great. This was probably my favourite-looking non-built-in fridge I saw. For 36" counter-depth-ish freestanding fridges, it's one of highest capacities you'll find. Especially impressive is available surface area of shelving. If that was a stat listed, this fridge would be tops for this size. I too avoided in-door dispenser like the plague after seeing figures how much more likely such models needed repairs vs non-dispenser models. And Electrolux in particular had major issues with this in both standard & Icon versions of this model. I ended going built-in and finding a smokin' deal (relative to built-in prices) on a Bosch unit. BTW there are at least 2 different trim kits. The louvered trim kit is the one seen in a couple images on Icon website. It looks very nice IMHO. I would have done it. It's too bad it's flush with the fridge cabinet and no option to make it flush with front of doors. I'm probably too nitpicky though? Still looks great to me, link below. I've had the Icon sxs in the "domestic" model and have had zero problems since October 2005. Furthermore, it is the only appliance that doesn't show fingerprints, since it is not true stainless. I do read what other people say, and can't speak to more recent purchases, but wouldn't hesitate to do it again based on my experience (as long as my experience is such that I don't need to replace it any time soon!)

I have had my Electrolux ICON all fridge/freezer since July. I had a problem initially with the fridge not working. Repairman came and said the compressor was not connected. He connected it and now they work great. They look great and the price is right.

We've had our 2 all-fridges and 1 all-freezer up and running since February without a problem. They are fancier Frigidaires, but the nicer, higher quality shelves and not so much plastic make them better in my view. The price is amazing compared to SZ and Thermador, but I've never had either, and since they were so far out of our budget range, I stopped at the price comparison and didn't really compare for usable space, configuration, etc.
