How are you tracking costs?

We are just finalizing our plans and I want to start "officially" tracking our costs. Does anyone have any suggestions or templates that they've used that work? I've been playing in excel and don't want to reinvent something if someone has a template they can share.

I'll post plans soon for input.

I have a MS Word document with a table format. I have a column for the name of the seed, how many seeds sown, date sown, date of first germination, and how many germinated. I keep everything in alphabetical order, with veggies and herbs separate from flowers. I enter the first three columns every time I WS some containers. When spring comes, I enter some of the "date germinated" info on the computer, but I usually end up printing the form out, and entering the info on the hard copy. I bring it outside with me every time I check on the containers, and I can keep track of how many seedlings germinated day by day on the hard copy. It's easier to have my entire list in my hand than try to remember what and how many germinated and run in the house to enter it on the computer. When it is all finished, I go back to the computer and enter in all the info. This is then what I use to contribute to the database. Which makes me wonder.... I don't think I ever sent in my info from 2006-2007...? :) Dee

I am extremely security conscious obviously, I use hard nonsense passwords and rarely ever use the same password for anything , for security sensitive sites I never use the same and always use hardened password. I have one notebook I keep everything written down in, I keep it in a secure locked location, I do NOT put them on my pc and NEVER in my email account if your email is hacked they have access to every single one of your accounts and passwords that is the biggest no no of them all because email accounts are so easily hacked these days. For those doing that I urge you to reconsider!!! If someone manages to break into my house past me and my husband and dogs and our weapons and manage to steal my computers and also find the locked location of my password book and break into that and find that particular notebook then they can have it because I will be cold and dead by then. And I would imagine they will be shedding a little blood too. The only other location is in a lock drawer in a completely separate location, not in my home, in case of a fire or catastrophe here. I never allow the browser to remember passwords and never ever keep any type of password or registration info in my email since email is so insecure.

I do, or did, have a spreadsheet of daylilies I want! Unfortunately, my taste change, one year I am wanting reds, the next spiders or UFs, or blue eyed ones :) Total waste of time for me. I am trying to limit myself to daylilies that I learn from this forum actually do perform great. Note that I said "trying". I really do need to stop adding, I just don't have the energy any more!

Thank you so much, emmaschas! Actually, it's a nice break to sit down at the computer for a few minutes. We closed on the "old" house on Wednesday and the new house isn't finished yet. We're officially homeless. LOL The new owners are kind enough to let us stay til the end of next week, but we're trying to get out as quickly as we can. Only problem is that we can't step foot in the new house while they're finishing the hardwoods (they are GORGEOUS!!!) and the carpet can't go in until Tuesday or Wednesday. I've been having to trek boxes from this house to the storage unit. *sigh* We'll have the movers do the big stuff Wednesday or Thursday. :o)

Hi all! We were incommunicado for a few weeks after our surprise December 5th move. It took a while to get our internet, cable, and phones up and running. Sorry to the folks who didn't get their spreadsheets yet! Thanks for your patience everyone. The spreadsheets are on the way :o)

OT: In reading through the back threads, and being amazed at how you kept your costs so low, you mentioned getting your wood front doors from the importer. Can you share who that was and if they have an online site?

I got the doors through Miacom on eBay. There's a link below that will take you to their door listings.

FYI...the prices on their doors are $300-500 off during this time of year (slow season). They'll go back up in March. I think she told me it was the end of March, but I don't remember for sure.

Here's a pic before it was stained...$1999 with free shipping. Gotta love eBay. :o)
