printer quit printing

My desktop computer is a HP running XP Professional SP3...I have a HP all-in-one printer (C5180) My laptop is a Toshiba with Windows 7 Home Premium. I wanted to be able to print from my laptop so I bought an Ethernet cable and ran it from my printer to my router. All was well and I was able to print. Then..yesterday, I tried to print and it won't print. I am new to Windows 7, but I figured out to go to the control panel and check on my printer...it says the documents on in queue...but, the printer if offline. I unplugged the cable from the back of the printer and waited a bit and then plugged it back in...still not able to print...I can't think of what else I can do...can anyone help me figure this out?

Just maybe,

I had the same concern on a different HP some years back. They at first thought it was a bad power supply which was incorrect even after HP shipping a new one. It turned out to be that I had the printer plugged into a surge suppressor. At that time HP recommended their printers be directly plugged into the wall. They were right as that change eliminated my grief.

Yep...mine is plugged into a surge protector.....

But...It "did" print for a while...did yours do that?

START>Printers>right click on the printer entry. Is is set as the default printer? Have you used any system cleaners in which you removed drivers, registry entries, etc.? Have you uninstalled or installed any applications? When all else fails uninstall all the HP software and drivers according to the HP instructions, and re-install according to the HP instructions. DA

Thanks, zep. It's not set to mirror image. I even tried checking that box to see if I could reverse it. No such luck. I don't understand the fix in your link either. I'll try un- and re-installing the printer (just in case the bits got turned sideways, ya know). This is such a dopey problem.

Problem printing fabric labels in printer

I posted this last year, so it's just a copy/paste. The labels are washable. I have several on quilts which have been washed numerous times. This is about using the Bubble Jet Set solution: Posted by mary_c (My Page) on Sun, Jun 5, 11 at 10:03 Oh, I just follow the directions on the bottle, and it works fine. Perhaps the "hint" I had was the type of freezer paper I used - it's heavier than the stuff on a roll. It's also precut in 8.5x11" sheets, so it goes through the printer beautifully. I'm probably grasping at straws, but I have an HP Laserjet P1006 that stopped printing when it ran out of paper, leaving documents in the queue. Since you are probably as desperate as I was, I'll pass on what worked for me. I know it sounds silly. :) These are the instructions that I found: Raise the lid of the print cartridge area 5 times all the way up and all the way down and it will print a page with hundreds of tiny horizontal lines. After that was printed, the queue was cleared and it printed again. Just a thought and I hope it works for you.

I had a situation with an HP printer that would act just like yours. For some reason it would occasionally switch over to having the Printer Offline box checked. Unchecking the box and clearing the print queue (if necessary) would make it work fine. The fix usually lasted for several weeks.

You mentioned that your Control Panel showed the printer offline. Did you go in and uncheck that?

Mine did the same thing. Unplug the printer from the computer. Delete the printer in the printer box. Restart the computer and plug the printer back in.

The computer will detect a new device and you set it to default. It worked again.

I unplugged everything and left it that way over night...this morning, I came into my computer room prepared to keep trying...I plugged everything in again and the printer is now working fine.......for now

Hope this does take care of your concern permanently. However, if not please try my suggestion. It drove me nuts for about a month with a brand new printer until I tried the direct plugin.

:o) I have a feeling that that is what I am going to have to do...it's just that it isn't going to be easy to get to an electrical outlet to plug my printer into....so I was trying to take the easy way out....
