Anyone getting a HP popup about updating?

It popped up about five minutes ago--a blue and white square just above the systray--and I can't make it go away. Very strange! It says, "An update is available. (Doesn't say to what, but I have an HP Photosmart Plus printer.) Would you like to download and install this update now?"

Even if I wanted to, there is no button to hit to respond to the offer, and the message part of the square is off-center to such an extent that on the right-hand side, the "u" of "you" is cut off. Perhaps there was supposed to be a button there. Yet I can see a thin grey border all around the thing. I can move it away from the edge of the screen, but it doesn't change. Right-clicking on it doesn't bring up any menu.

Is this legit? Could HP be sending out flawed popups, or is something wrong with my PC?

Win7, Dell 560, MSE, WinDefender, and I run Malwarebytes and Superantispyware often.

There more than likely is a HP Solutions listed on your Start Menu. Take a look in the utility and see if you have an automatic update notification activated. Also, check the Start Menu for a HP Update entry as a stand alone entry. If you have the entry the automatic update notification may be there.

yes my HP computers all did that and when I installed my HP printer on my custom pc it did that as well for checking for updates for that. I had the same problem with it not creating the button properly, I found if I closed everything else and left that button showing then went to that button and clicked it that it would begin the scan for the updates.
I did send an email to HP about the problem with the button but never got a reply.

I bought a used electric start engine years ago.Starter would do nothing.Opened it up and a lot of "stuff came out of it. The "stuff" was particles of the cermaic (sp) fields that were installed,and hammering on the outer case by O O shattered them. My 2 cents, since nobody asked is that the forum is still a valuable resource and generally a pleasurable experience. I used retina's instructions and the flash ads went away. One extra click to find an email address is tolerable if iVillage has moved it to protect me from spammers, and that may well be what's up. I sent a message to the website hosts telling them they broke the "Remember Me" checkbox functionality and have asked them to fix it. Hey! Maybe that will work!! We'll see. Mary

I made the edits to the host file as noted in a recent post somewhere here, as well as setting my popup blocker to high. It's a little bit of a PITA when I DO want to see a popup (like calculating shipping at eBay), but nothing that I can't just right click and say "Allow from this site, or temporarily" Hope you find a simple solution, too. I like GinGins...sounds like the easiest fix.

It's perfectly safe to update from the pop up. Try it, that may end the problem. IF you mean that every time you visit the GardenWeb you have to login, next time you login scroll down a bit and you'll see the little box that you need the place a check in that will save your credentials so you don't have to keep typing it in every time you visit. If you use Ccleaner or something similar it may clear out your user name and password but all you'll have to do is place a check in that box again to be remembered.

I found "hpwuSchd Application"in the start menu, but as the popup happened well after startup, I don't think that is what is doing it. More likely is what I found in HP Solutions. I hadn't even looked there before, and there were checkmarks in all three categories for automatically checking for updates. I changed them.

Actually, this popup would not have alarmed me, were it not for the fact that it had no button there at all, and right after that, Windows 7 sent a popup about backing up, which I had not set for Mondays (though I had tried to do a manual backup a few hours earlier), so I got the idea that maybe my clicking on the HP popup triggered a key logger or something, which triggered the backup notice in order to capture my Admin password. Is such a thing even possible? I couldn't even close the popup using Task Manager. That was upsetting, too.

Anyway, full scans with both MBAM and Superantispyware didn't find anything alarming, only a lot of adcookies in the case of the latter.
The popup I got was pale blue and had a number of crosses or stars in it. Is that what you got, Raven? And was there actually a radio button, or did the whole thing act as a button? I was going to complain to HP about the shame of them (a computer company after all!) creating and sending out a popup with nowhere to click on. Now that I know that you got ignored, I won't waste my time. Aggravating, isn't it!

it has been a while ago and my memory is not great so I really do not remember exactly what it looked like, it baffled me because of not being able to do anything with it, but I accidentally found that closing everything I had open and left it then showing on top of the desktop that I could click it and it would begin the scan. I did finally find the name of the process for it in task manager and would go kill it there too. The strange thing was that originally it was normal with the actual button to click to do the scan but after one update from HP it then came up deformed like that so it was something they sent through in that update that did it, which is why I tried letting them know. I knew I could not be the only one with that problem!

I get the same popup and I can't click on it. So to get rid of it, I just restart the computer.

next time try looking through your processes list in task manager you will likely see it running and can end task on it there, I don't recall what the name was but it had hp in the name.

I did look at the processes list and didn't see anything that looked like it could be the cause of the problem. No mention of HP at all, if my memory serves me. That was part of the weirdness and scariness of it.
