wmp recording problem

My old but reliable compaq t2130 notebook is refusing to burn a CD. It gives the following message:

"WMP cannot burn the files to the CD. Verify that the disc is clean and not damaged. If necessary, select a slower recording speed or try a different brand of blank discs."

I lowered the speed two times to 8X and have tried different brands. Could it be my burner? (still the original)

burners definitely do go bad, if you can not resolve it with the slowest speed and by trying other discs then it is likely the burner. Do you happen to have an external usb connect burner you could use? I keep one around just for times like that. Have you tried a different burning program by any chance? there are a lot of good freebies available.

Thanks, Raven. I didn't think to try different software but have and like Ashampoo. I didn't think of an external usb connect burner, either! :) Is it a good idea to try replacing the burner? (I've done this in a desktop only...) Thank you.

Tom, your plants still look great. Mine have lost a lot of foliage. Not disease, just yellowing and dropping. Maybe the cold? Too old? Not enough sun? Still some left to ripen, but nothing like before, and nothing like yours look now. microsoft codecs for wmp9 and better There's also another codec pack for media player 6.4, and another for something else ... basicly if you have a corrupt codec or are missing the one the camera uses strange things can happen if the web page isnt coded to send your to where-ever and have media player get you the proper codec.

Pesky- Wow...that's a lot to do! What area are you at? If you've mentioned it b4, I forgot! Yeah...SO much depends on the melt-rate, and hopefully not much more snow. SO FAR, they've got odds of us hitting 41' @ ~ 20%. That would be the highest... EVER. 75 miles to our North, Grand Forks ND had a disastrous flood in '97...some of their levees broke. Fargo barely scraped by (that crest in Fargo was just under 40'). Now, GF/EGF is protected by massive dikes to 62' (Federal/State project!). So....hopefully...Fargo's diversion plans will get thru congress, etc. Won't help this spring obviously, but the Corps is studying various routes thru/around the metro here. Price??? Welllll....who knows...I've heard $100 million a few times.... It'll be somewhat like Winnipegs' MASSIVE diversion-channel I guess. Without it, Winnipeg simply wouldn't be there.... It might be as simple as the stop button being a bit dusty and not making contact... Back before cd writers had buffers I often had disks crap out on me at the end of writing, but soon learned the disks were sometimes ok but not 'closed' or 'finalised' - if you have a computer with dvd writing software, you may find you can put the disk in and finalise it using the computer dvd writer. Not a perfect solution, but a workaround. Otherwise I guess it's the new machine. They don't do rf in/out anymore? Your mode of operation (vcr to dvd recorder) would be better using component or at least composite connections, rather than rf since the path is thus: Component video (assuming that's the internal native format) converted to rf (tv/radio signals) out of one machine, into the recorder's rf, convert back to component video. Lots of quality issues.

I have never tried to replace anything on a laptop so I can not help there maybe someone who has can jump in and give some advice.

does your player play at all? is the problem only with the burning is what I am getting at. It plays but does not burn or it does not do either task.

I found the usb external burner at an office supply store on the clearance rack for quite cheap and it has come in handy to have around especially now that I have a netbook which does not have an onboard cd drive.

It's not playing, either. When I insert a CD, the drive remains busy and/or says the drive is empty... Sounds like the burner is shot.
