How many of you have a mirror wider than your vanity?

If so, do you like it?

We have ordered a 36" wide triview mirrored cabinet to go over a 30" vanity, but now I'm second-guessing myself. I'm also worrying about whether they will be able to recess this thing. I'm thinking we could still change this (would probably cost us a restocking fee). OTOH, the larger mirror (which is what we have had and are used to) does brighten the room and provide a lot of extra storage space. So I'm torn.

If they can't recess it, they are going to surface mount it.

golddust, lol. Maybe no mirror at all, and just a nightlight would be a good idea around here. :)

The more I look into this, the more I think having the mirror wider than the countertop/sink is a bad design idea. But what would both look good and be functional?

In our guest bathroom we have a 24" vanity (it's a small bathroom) and discussed mirror width. We ended up going with just the width of the vanity, thinking it would look strange if the mirror were wider. I don't know if that helps you, though. The mirror won't be super wide, but it seemed that it would still be wide enough to see yourself in.

In our case it's not a cabinet, though, just a mirror, so you do lose storage space in your case. Could you add additional storage elsewhere? Maybe add a shelf somewhere in the room?

I tend to choose mirrors over art. I like the way they play with light in our little cottage and reflect the outside views. I can count art on one hand, but I can't the mirrors! Mustang, your wall reminds me of something we did in our daughter's room. I started with them different finishes, but I ended up painting them all the same shade of white. It bounced the light beautifully. (BTW, I love looking at pics but am scared to death when it comes to sharing. This has always been our "we'll only be here awhile" house, so I've decorated with whatever I can find for pennies instead of what I want. Read: hodgepodge!) In our living room I've actually lost track of how many different mirrors we've used for a little while then moved. That room has great morning light, and I just can't help but fill it with mirrors. A double light over each sink should be sufficient with a window and assuming the shower is directly across from the vanity and that is the extent of the room. Other options are three single sconces mounted on the mirror and an over head light to give more light to the shower. I have a four-light over a 60" vanity in a 5x11 windowless room. The vanity area is well-lit. The shower at the end of the room is a little more shadowed but not enough to make showering and cleaning an issue.

Yes I have a nook in my bedroom outside the walk-in closet that was designed to fit my old vanity. I told the architect that if my vanity didn't fit, he was fired! The vanity I got when I was about 8 years old...part of a french provincial bed set, white with gold trim. In the 80s, I refinished it, marbelized the top and changed out the hardware. The mirror and the wall sconces were salvaged from the old house that was here before we built. The capiz shell sconces were over the fireplace. In covid days, I rarely do makeup any more, but I've used the vanity a lot. The angled lighted makeup mirror is key for seeing one's face and making the set up work.

I just tried Bellacor.com and they have hundreds of 5-light fixtures. I clicked on one and it was 42" wide. Since I don't know what style you're interested in I can't recommend one in particular, so try this site yourself and see if you can find something you like. Houzz probably has some too. I have purchased from Bellacor many times. Another site you can try is Lampsplus.com. There is a lot of overlap in their offerings, but they will each have some things that the other doesn't.

I don't know about you all but these days the smaller the mirror the better it is. My lighting guy was asking what kind of lighting I had in mind just the other day. Without missing a beat I told him the poorer the lighting, the better. I'm just not sure I really want to know everything these days.

We do have an old cabinet/mirror in the basement bathroom that would fit perfectly into the existing opening. It's identical to the one in the master bath -- here:

and is good quality. We hardly ever use the basement bath and really don't even need a medicine cabinet there. It would be kind of small, but certainly authentic, since it's original to the house.

If we feel a need for more mirrors, we could just install a couple of wall mirrors on either side.

I don't know ... just thinking "out loud" here.

That seems like a reasonable plan. You could buy a new mirror for the basement bath, without a medicine cabinet.
