MS Word 2002 question

I used to be able to see a "history" of my documents when I opened MS Word 2002. There would be a listing on the right side of the window showing my most recently opened documents in descending order from newer to older. Suddenly, it seems to have disappeared.

I've searched "help" and "options" and can't come up with how to get that back again. I bet someone here knows how to do it. :) Or, at least, I hope so. Thank you very much.

Probably doesn't help in word 2002 but in word 2007 under word options > advanced there is a setting for how many recent documents you want to see listed. Maybe you have the same setting and the number has is some way been reset to 0. To find the setting in word 2007 you click on the 'office button' which probably corresponds to 'File' in word 2002. On the bottom of the dialog box that opens when you click on the office button you can click on 'word options'. Maybe a search for 'word options' in help will locate it for you.

In my Word 2003 version, it's under Tools--->Options, on the General tab.

Bob. I guess I wasn't clear enough. IF I use 'text boxes' everything flows perfectly (although I am not an expert on linking either and have had some problems figguring out the rules for getting each box linked to its predessor). But that is not my question. I was hoping to learn how to easily (rapidly?) create multiple, equal 'text boxes' to allow this flow. OR how to get regular columns, even on the first page to behave something like 'text boxes'. On the second and following pages, they do infact respond that way, with text flowing naturally from column to column. But on the first page which does have some carridge returns to keep banners and icons in place (and could indeed induce strange text effects as you suggest, although I don't think that is actually what is happening) the two column formatting from the second page will incroach into the bottom of the first page; or the outlined box on the first page moves down to the second page. In other words, some of the formatting on each page moves up or down as text is added or removed.

I have never seen Open Office offered in firefox install has anyone? I have seen it offered in some other updates like java and flash in the past. also make sure when you do firefox updates and the browser reopens to a new page other than your homepage to close it and reopen it again because it only does that the first time to let you know that it did update properly it does not change the homepage the next time you reopen it will be to your usual home page. It will do the same thing if you had any updates for your add-ons it will open to that page to let you know the update was successful. If you did install Open office it will be listed in your add remove programs list in control panel.

Many years ago, I had a upsetting, disagreement with a close family member. That night I wrote a long, rambling letter bringing up every thing this person did from the beginning of time. I was upset and, maybe its a female thing, I wrote this ridiculously long letter using Word so I could password protect it. I had thought I would sleep on it and reread it the next day before sending. I didn't want to send an email. Well, needless to say, the next day the problem resolved. Everything was wonderful, I totally forgot about the letter. Long time later (maybe a year), I'm cleaning out my computer and find this cryptic Word doc that I couldn't open. I was deleting a bunch of junk. Then, I remembered that letter ! It was not something I would want on my computer (as life with this person was wonderful). So, I tried to delete it, couldn't. Needed a password. Had no idea what that could be. I was upset when written and heaven knows what I came up with. That letter still sits on this computer. I could never figure out the password. Back then, I thought I would have a new computer (this one is XP) and I would wipe the drive. Well I'm still using this machine and hope I can finally wipe it out and get a new machine. On another note, I worked in the medical field for years. Sometimes I would write letters for patients from home (rather than the office computer) in the evening to save time at work. I would password those letters, copy them on a flash drive and taken them to work. Copy to the work machine then delete from the flash and the home machine. Not ideal, probably not the best thing to do, but I did it. Any patient letters were always password protected. I sympathize with the OP as I've been there many times. If I did that now, I would write the password down. I didn't back then and never found a way to open that personal letter. I'll wait for Windows 10 then wipe this drive. Hope you find a way, Jane

Some computers come with a free 30 version of ms office, but I deleted mine rather then pay for it, because if I was going to buy it, I would have gotten a disc in my hand instead of "downloaded version" because I am parnoid that I will lose the number and get it deleted, and not be able to install it. But, I would not make any changes without back up disc of the OS. Is it HP? You can order them from HP if it is less then two years old. I used to have a sony lap top and it came with microsoft money, and games that took like all the memory, so I kept deleting them, but that would make the whole system not work. Things could be different now. I have deleted microsoft office and no problems yet, but I have the back up disc in case. I bought microsoft office, because it was a cheap as microsoft word alone, but it did not work for me. I returned it for a full refund and bought just microsoft word which was all I needed. I don't know if any of this information will help you, but it always better to have recovery discs before doing anything. If you don't have them, you can returnd the computer to somewhere like best buy, and have them reinstall it. But, I have heard horror stories. Even if you pay to have someone else restore it to factory specs, it may or may not work the same.

Not sure that this will result in what you are looking for but here goes. Select File then Open. (When I do this the folder that is opened is My Documents which is where I store my document files.) There make sure that the selection of files to be opened are Word Documents (*.doc). Near the top of the Open dialog box is Modified. Click on that to choose whether you want the files to be listed in ascending or descending order. (When I do this, the files that are shown are *.doc documents along with the "sub"-folders that are also in the My Documents folder -- and the *.doc files are either ascending or descending chronological order.)

Thank you, everyone. I found the place you referred me to...tools, options, general (for my 2002) and "Recently Used File List" is set at "4" and checkmarked, but when I open the application, there are none listed. Maybe the app is so old that the file is damaged or something. I didn't realize that I could see a list under "File" as someone has mentioned so that will be helpful. Thanks again!

I also am using MS Word 2002.

When you click on View, do you have a check mark to the left of Task Pane? (or can see it in tool bars list)
When I unchecked it, that list disappeared so thought that may be the culprit?

Hi urlee,
I do have Task Pane on the drop down list under View and it appears at the right of the window when I click on it. "Show at Startup" is checked but it doesn't come up when I close Word and re-open it. But, I think you've put me on the right track...I'll see what I can come across. Thank you SO much!
