My suggestion is to go to the ubuntu forums, I have not used ubuntu in ages. I know on my Mephis when it is loading it gives a few seconds to choose and I choose the latest Mephis, if something went wrong I could choose the one just under that one, then go do updates. I do not know if ubuntu does that. Ubuntu Forums those folks know all there is to know about ubuntu. How far do you get before it ask for that login? and did you ever have a presario login from when it was new? and had you changed the theme you had on it? Have you tried inserting your ubuntu live cd and booting on it going in through the cd and seeing if you can tell what is happening?

There are Linux distributions specifically "designed" with older hardware in mind......AntiX might be just what you're looking for.... See the link......... Then again maybe not...Go to distrowatch.com and click on all the "top 100" list items....AntiX runs like a scalded dog on fairly recent hardware with 2GB Ram. Then again, almost everything runs really fast with 2GB RAM and nothing running except what's needed/wanted....And just my experience with the "base" system that underlies AntiX, (SimplyMepis7.0 for more "recent" hardware) it's absolutely unbeatable, and stable as a rock running 4 browsers with lots and lots of windows and tabs open and several programs running too.... And in my experience, no need for anything anti-virus or the like needed..... I never turn this thing off and never disconnect from the WWW, and I never have an issue If you think you are going to run XP w/o issue on that much RAM, it ain't gonna happen, not with anything more than just the base OS running anyway at a pace that you'll measure in less than hours, you won't anyway....But with lots of RAM it will do just fine, just remember to start nothing and only load what you are running. Owbist, thanks for the suggestion of a new thread. The computer I am having problems with only has X-P. Due to a problem with my X-P machine, I have put the Ubuntu project on the back burner. Please allow me to tell you about my new problem. X-P SP3, 1024 MB memory. Due to a connection related problem I talked to the folks at ATT. They got me back on line but the computer is very slow, it has not crashed, but it takes forever for the pages to load. Sometimes I type faster than the computer can load the images of the type, and I am a very slow typer. When going from one web page to another is seems like forever. When I try to click back to the former page, also takes a long time. Also, the pages load small and I have to enlarge them, nothing seems to work like it should. I have run Malwarebytes, Ccleaner, Spyware Blaster and defragged the computer...nothing bad showed up. Steve

Thanks, I have used the Task Manager to terminate it, but I had trouble finding it listed in any "startup" list. I used "msconfig" to gain access to Start Up and didn't find NDSTray.exe. On the Windows 10 side, I received the 1.5T Western Digital USB HDD, really small, hard to believe so much data can be stored in such a small space without creating a "black hole" Ha! The 1.5T is formated NTSF so I went right to making an Image of subject W7 Toshiba. This took about a hour, size about 70 GB, small potatoes on the 1.5T storage. I then figure why not also do a customized W7 backup... the W7 backup remembers (can identify) that the backup it created on the Flash Drive isn't available... so now I have to figure out how to make W7 forget about an old backup it did. Welcome advice, but will search the web later. I have multiple uses for the 1.5 T, one is the Toshiba W7, another is a Gateway W8.1, another is an XP. All of these want NTSF, still it seems like a good idea for me to partition the space to something like 100 GB for W7, 200 GB for W8.1, and 50 GB for XP. Then I would allocate something like 100 GB for reformatting by Linus so I can use that space for a boot device for Ubuntu, Xubuntu for the XP machine. I might as well split up the other NTSF into a couple other devices for future use. I was disappointed to learn the Image has all the information buried under the Restore cloak. That is I couldn't find any way to use the file manager and look inside the Image for stuff, say My Pictures for an example. So I open another folder and started copying all the "stuff" in W7 the I would like to simply access, oh yes, I also used W7 to create a Transfer which can be used to move from one computer to a new one. Or to a new OS, but I assume the Microsoft W10 upgrade will take the necessary steps to transfer my applications (those that work, will look up Palm Desk Top to see). Still, having lots of space I make a Transfer, it too cloaks the information below is administrative software. We live in interesting times, old saying but more true with each passing year I observer after observing many passing years.
