Older (unused) GE Advantium vs. new Profile convection microwave
Comments (0)This weekend we found an older model Advantium wall oven (240) for $50 at the Habitat Restore. Manufactured 8/2005, it's kind of grimy on the outside, but looks pristine on the inside, and we think it was never installed. But it's not convection - just speedcook and microwave. We'd been planning on getting a new Profile convection microwave to use as a second oven (using a great multi app. GE Profile rebate coming up) but now don't know if the Advantium would work instead, or maybe even better? I just don't get, yet, the differences in how these appliances work, and how they balance out, esp. without the convection in the Advantium. I mostly wanted the 2nd smaller oven for cooking up just a few cookies at a time or a pan of brownies, lunch pizzas, casseroles, and some small roasts, plus microwave chores - I'm just cooking for two most of the time. Experiences or advice, anyone?...See MoreAdvantiums & Microwave Convections - OTR
Comments (11)I wish I could do a good vent and the micro some place else but due to space constraints it's not possible. My old GE Spacemaker was loud too. I hate that! It's a ridiculous amount of noise these things make. It didn't seem to do a great job either but the vent hookup behind the wall was faulty horrible as we have found out. My folks have a GE and their house smells when cooking and it's loud as the dickens too. Both units have vent to the outside. Theirs even runs directly out the back through the wall, no run. I would probably venture into speed cook but plan to mostly use it for convection only mode. The baking and roasting features interest me the most. If the quality of that isn't so great, I probably wouldn't use it much so want to steer from claims that don't really deliver. I probably will continue to do microwaving on quick frozen meals. A mix of scratch and frozen foods is what I'm planning for. Economical use of a smaller oven than that on the range. I'm not sure what I'm paying for with the extra $200+. The other unit I'm looking at is a Whirlpool true convection 1.8 which claims to roast and bake. It has a 4 speed fan. The steaming feature is good for me too. The Advantium says: Speedcook; Microwave Convection Bake Broil Warm Proof Toast I'd expect steams too although it isn't mentioned. Sounds all around functional. But could I expect the broil/toast features from any convection microwave anyway? (I don't trust sales people to give me knowledgeable or even honest answers on these things). http://www.ajmadison.com/cgi-bin/ajmadison/GMH6185XVQ.html So, does the Advantium cooking quality taste better for some reason? Or convection out of one or the other runs about the same? Both will brown nicely. I love browned and crispy foods!...See MoreHelp deciding.... microwave convection vs advantium vs....?
Comments (4)I have the Advantium Pro 240V and I use it primarily as a microwave and extra oven. It works great for that. The real deal, however, is the speed features. It combines the convection heat, microwaves and halogen (radiant) heat for speed cooking. I don't use it as often as I expected to because the reason for speed sort of dried up, but it's pretty awesome. There is a steep learning curve if you want to create your own settings, but there are also some programmed settings which you can adapt, and a recipe book which you can also use for clues. It has a pretty large (i.e. oven sized) cavity, so it's not fast to preheat, but I do use it for things analogous to your chicken fingers (like frozen appetizers), mostly because it's convenient (correct side of kitchen) and also because I think the turn table is an asset to those small things. There are sensors for things like popcorn and frozen vegetables which work very well. Since microwaves degrade over time, it's an expensive option if you use a microwave a lot. I do use the microwave settings on mine several times per day, but rarely for more than a minute or two. As a convection oven, I can get three 2 qt. casseroles on the turntable to reheat, and there's a wire rack that goes across the middle which will hold my 17" Pyrex rectangular baking dish. I don't do a lot of actual cooking in the Advantium, but it does it fine. I just have two other ovens for that....See Moreadvantium microwave convection oven
Comments (2)Hi Diane, We had one installed during our home build in 2014. Pros SUPER Fast cooking/grilling of foods such as chicken fries, biscuits, French fries when you use the speed cook option. It has preset times based on food type, recipe, etc. It also allows you to save your own preset temp/time combination. Comes with 3 different plates (grill plate and flat iron plate for speed cook option, and glass plate for when used as a microwave) There are a lot of features that I probably don't use to it's full capability, but we love it. Cons It take a bit to cool down after using the speed cook option. So if you have something you want to microwave, you need to give it a few minutes PLUS you must remove the iron pan and insert the glass plate. My children (15 & 22 boys) are older, so if you have small children, you may need to help them with plate removal and insertion so as to not get burned. Cleaning is somewhat difficult only because it is a deep oven, but it all depends on what you cook. The door opens like a regular oven door and because it is located right next to the fridge( don't understand builders thought process for that), it has now left 2 dents in the fridge as the boys didn't realize the proximity. Be mindful of that. Otherwise we love it. I hope this helps....See Moreplllog
