XP is irrelevant, what "Word" do you have? I assume you are talking about Microsoft Word as in Office 2007 or earlier.

I may be wrong about this, but I think Word ignores certain types of pages for its page x of y. For example, if you have a title page and an index, I think those get ignored in the page count. If this is a compilation of multiple documents, that could get exacerbated.

I discovered I was doing ok 1-81 then the numbering starts all over with 1 on what should be page 82. In looking around I was able to bring up some kind of format screen and it talked about sections. I only want one section (the whole document) I've never had lessons in Word only the old WP5.1

First copy and save your document with a new name in case things mess up!

Then this link should start you in the right direction, but it might also be worth Googling for "remove Word sections" because the page format will probably change as you remove the unwanted "sections".

It looks like it is just a case of having the right "View" in Word and then using the normal "Search and Replace" feature.

I couldn't get your link to work but I'll try the google suggestion.

I started fresh last night and copy/pasted 6 different reports into a clean word doc and everything looked ok but on the next one the page numbering started from one on that "section" so deleted it all

took your advice and found a solution as follows:
Create a header or footer with a Page number
Perform the merge
In the Merged Document
Click Edit, Replace
In the "Find What" box, type: ^b
In the "Replace With" box, type: ^m
Click "Replace All" [a box will appear indicating the number of replacements]
Click OK
Click CLOSE

did it and now have page X of X pages correctly.
