We all know there are ups and downs in building your own home. So just when you think you're going to go insane over the delays, problems, budget, GC's in general- associated with building your own home....remember it could be worse!!!

Andie, It's not too bad tonight, I can actually see sky and yellow sun - the smoke is not nearly as heavy. We are experiencing a great relief because the Fire Fighter's staging area is right here in our town, about 2 miles from my property. On the large field across the highway there is a tent-city, porta-potties, trailers from food-providers. I am sure they would not set up this big a facility if there was danger. Three miles or so north of here there is the Kate Wolf Memorial Concert, about 2,000 or so attending. All that makes us fell pretty secure. I am coughing and sneezing and my eyes water, I think the days of smoke are really hitting home now. My animals all are a bit under the weather, smoke gets to them, also. My Taffy and Joann's RocCat - both very independent - have not checked in today, usually nothing noteworthy, but because of the fires, there are more coyotes heard and I'm sure there are many hungry and upset beasts around, driven here by the fires, so that's a concern, even though those boys are pretty wise and careful. Taffy just may not have noticed yet that the house guests have gone; he tends to be invisible if there are strange cars around. All in all, right now it is all much more positive, and the T-storms have not materialized. Maybe the worst is over and pretty soon we can breathe again (with relief, that is)

I'll admit to liking all the house-buying/selling shows. However, since the gardening shows disappeared, I don't make a point of watching HGTV any more. If I'm bored and flip through the channels, and come across one of these house-selling shows, I will watch it, but I don't tune in just to watch. It would be great if the change in management brought more gardening shows. Maybe we should all bombard him with e-mails as soon as he takes over to get our point across! :) Dee

NhBaskets, while I agree on not turning on the hood until it's fully installed, do check on the venting on not only your range hood but your bath vents too. At the outset, when I asked, I was told that our range hood would vent through the roof. ok. The day the HVAC guys finished the venting we noticed that our range hood venting pipe goes up into an attic space, turns a corner and is vented out into the CLOSED porch roof area. The part between the porch ceiling and the roof above it. This is totally wrong. The builder knows this, and it needs to be corrected before we move in, but there must be some mysterious timeline for correcting stuff like that. Meanwhile I keep checking it. I'm quite concerned that they don't connect our Vent-A-Hood and try to turn it on until the vent is properly installed through the roof. Also, we noticed that the bathroom vents went up into same porch roof space, or just up into attic area, and did not connect to anything, although the vent holes are cut into porch ceiling for those. Now a lot of those are hidden behind drywall. Honestly, I don't understand why they don't do it right the first time. And why they don't correct it right away if it wasn't done right. If they'd corrected it right away the roof flashing would have gone around the vent hole and we would be a lot more confident that we wouldn't eventually have a problem there. As it is now, the roof is finished, and cutting a hole is going to present all the problems it would as if it were a remodel. And we don't have problems with our builder, we love him and for the most part everything is going very very well. I have so much sympathy for you. I just can't imagine how stressful this would be with problems with the builder.

Snidely claims, "New appliances are more capable, MUCH more energy efficient, and usually more reliable. " Just this past December, Hubs and I bought a new KitchenAid 'fridge because he decided we just HAD to get a new one. I refused to give up the old one, so it's in the garage. The new fridge has more cubic feet of storage space, both in the 'fridge part as well as the freezer. Even so, we simply cannot get as much food in the new unit as in the old unit. And the old one is still working great! I bought the old fridge, brand new, in July 1971. It was originally a Harvest Gold type color (although the name was not Harvest Gold), but I had it professionally re-enameled about 25 years ago. The thing works great. It has been serviced exactly once, in 1991, when some part needed to be replaced in the unit in the freezer. I know that it is absolutely NOT energy efficient at all, but neither am I. I'm not going to throw myself away, so I won't do it to that 'fridge, either. :-) I disagree with Snidely's statement that new appliances are more reliable (even though he did qualify his statement by adding "usually"). My old 'fridge has needed servicing once in 44 years and it's still going strong. I'm willing to bet that it will still be going when the new 'fridge conks out. They are not built to last. As Lucille said, "But it was hard to beat the reliability of Grandpa's ice box. "

To me this is no joke. The retaining wall for our back terrace and outdoor fireplace was rebuilt multiple times. We first noticed the problem when we realized that, when standing right in front of the chimney, we could see both the front and the left sides. Not only was the chimney torqued, but the retaining wall it is built into varied 2" in height from end to end. The mason's excuse was that his level was broken.

He was fired immediately - one of the few times our GC took responsibility for a problem without fighting us. Though why he was hired in the first place is beyond me - penny wise and pound foolish.

Mel, I got these pics in an email from my DIL's mom. I thought I would add a little saying to each.

I Googled and found where 3 are located.....

The Crooked House, (the level house) was built in 2004, is an addition at a popular shopping center, and is a major tourist attraction in Sopot, Poland. Makes you a little dizzy to look at it, doesnÂt it ?

The Wonderworks (the upside down building) is actually an amusement park for the mind with over 100 interactive exhibits for visitors of all ages to experience. The most eye-catching feature of Wonderworks is the unique exterior. The building appears to be upside atop a 1930Âs era brick warehouse.

The Purple House is on Indiana Avenue in Lubbock, Texas. After fighting city hall for 3 years the color scheme may end.

I don't know where the other houses are located. Anyone else have an idea???

OMG! Great pictures! LOL! The one on the cliff cracked me up. DD thought the chimney was cool and wants ours to look that way! LOL! On the link Worthy posted there is no way in **** I would go in the little house held up by that tree!!!!

The 200 y/o house in CT that I grew up in had a twisted chimney, but you couldn't see it. It twisted 90 degrees as it went through the attic, and on a real quiet night, the smoke would actually spiral up in the air. I'm not sure why they did it- maybe they thought it would draw better? That first house reminds me of some of the 'storybook' style I've been reading about lately.

some of the ones in Worth's link are photoshopped. they were pulled from a website called worth1000.com which is a photoshop artwork display website. The others appear to be real though!! REALLY strange houses out there!!

Can you imagine the poor construction crews the first time they saw the plans on some of these buildings! They had to just shake their heads.....

How would you know if your were plumb on the Crooked House? What about the Sideways House? Not to mention building a building upside down!!!!

Houses are upside down here in the desert all the time....mojave winds! Not, but there have been a few trailer houses roll around in the past.

Just remember....it could be worse!!!
