How to enlarge typing area in gmail

Is there a way to enlarge the area where I'm typing messages in gmail?

I want to be able to see more than one sentence or so without having to use the scroll bar when I'm composing a message.

How large is your text? Do you have a large signature? I can get 6 lines of text above my signature with normal sized sans serif font before I see the scroll bar. That is with my Firefox window opened to max size.

I should clarify that this is an issue when I hit "reply." That field is small. When I compose my original message the typing field is much much larger.

I don't have a "signature."

My text size is normal, not sure exact number but probably 12.

Either location will work, and the sizes will be fairly similar. The tub would give you a roughly 48" by 72" shower. The plumbing is already in place. The only possible negative could be the window. You are in zone5, so cold winters - but glass block, depending on it's thickness, can be a bit more insulative than a dual-pane window. Realize that a closed off shower with a window may be a little colder than the remainder of the bathroom on winter mornings. Once the shower is running, it'll warm the space within a few minutes. But it is something to at least consider. FWIW, I'm not against windows in showers, and I usually discount the complaints about larger open showers being colder. Your shower will be enclosed, so the overnight winter "cold soaking" aspect of it is worthy of consideration. Just have the shower controls located so you can open the shower door and turn on the shower without having to step into the shower. Using the existing shower location you'll have to shift the closet walls, but it will give you a roughly 48" by 60" shower. Still spacious. As you wrote, a neo-type entry would give better access to the toilet. Or you can square the shower and shorten the wall between the toilet and the bathroom door. Or eliminate that wall completely. Or even eliminate that wall and and rotate the toilet 90-degrees counter-clockwise. But that's more construction and you'd have to have a "toilet use versus door swing" talk with your spouse. A last thought and this probably makes zero sense based on the floorplan you posted, but I've seen some pretty weird things in my day so I'll toss it out anyway: Do you need a guest shower? You could meld your existing shower with the half-bath adjacent to it: -You could put your master shower where your tub is. -Leave your existing shower foorprint "as is", but build a wall where the current entry is to close the shower off from your master bath. Add a storage closet in front of that wall for master bath storage. - In the public powder room, open up that wall to get access to your current master shower. That would turn the existing half-bath into a 3/4 bath. So going back to your original question, the question of taking over the tub space or enlarging your existing shower? Both locations will give you an adequately-sized shower. Having the shower where the tub is now would likely give you a more attractive bathroom, with the shower being a focal point when you enter the bathroom. I understand that style is not particularly important to you. There is a chance however that a fully enclosed shower in the tub location could give you a cold-soaked shower space in wintertime due to the window. If angst over your hard water, the fear of spotted glass, and maintaining what natural light you now have are most important, then I'd recommend enlarging the existing shower.

Well - after 1 1/2 hours of playing around with this, I feel like a complete dummie. I have resolved myself to having nearly 3000 contacts to import to my Gmail contact list. But I can't get anywhere. I have my AOl address book imported into Yahoo. When I try to import into GMAIL (doesn't matter if I use the older or newer version), it asks where to import from - and I can't find the .csv files. I have no idea where they'd be. Whe I select browse, it takes me to my documents - and it's not there. If I try to browse someplace else, I can't find it. It also occurred to me that it may not be in .csv form yet - but when I try to export from one Yahoo account (to say, thunderbird or another yahoo account) - it suggests I can export as csv file - I click on ("Yahoo! CSV: export) - and then it brings up a screen that says: you have chosen to open yahoo_ab.csv file from http://address.yahoo.com. What should firefox do with this file? My choices are "save file" or "open with: browse". If I click "save file" - I don't think anything is happening. And I wouldn't know what to select if I used open with .... Going back to GMAIL import, I have tried entering various names that I've seen in Yahoo mail. Including "yahoo_ab.csv" - but again, nothing happens. I had a similar problem trying to import into thunderbird - I simply don't seem to be able to locate the files to do it. I'd rather go directliy from yahoo to gmail (without going through thunderbird - bc. from what I was reading, thunderbird does not maintain my address groups - and that is important to me. In fact, if I could only import my groups - that is most critical part). I'm sorry I can't be more articulate about where I'm getting hung up. I have truly never felt so in the dark dealing with computer things (even as untechy as I am, I've had a little more grasp than this). Thanks. Lynn.

Keep Separate Dining Room or Enlarge Kitchen?

Long-time lurker here, but new to posting. I thought I would tell you how we are opening up our kitchen (currently gutted now). We have a 12'x16' Formal Living Room immediately to the left when walking into the foyer. Behind that is a 12.5' x 12' Formal Dining Room. The kitchen (small 10' x 10' plus breakfast nook) is in back, next to the dining room, and the family room is on the other side of the kitchen. I entertain our family of 17 several times a year and I'm not willing to give up the dining room. However, the living room, to me, is a HUGE waste of space. Nobody ever goes in there. In fact, whenever I host a gathering, everybody gathers in my tiny "U" kitchen and I can't move to open the oven, cabinets, etc. It drives me crazy. My solution: move the DR set into the larger living room, which is open by columns to the foyer, and expand the "U" of my kitchen into the dining room. This allows for a longer peninsula with breakfast bar. On the far wall of the "old" dining room, facing the kitchen, will be a "bar" area and a desk area. I will be able to supervise my girls doing homework, being online, etc. all while I prepare dinner. Plus, it gives our guests an area to socialize while meals are being prepared. I should also mention, though, that we have a small study with french doors. This room, essentially, will be the LR, and will house the piano, two chairs and a small desk or table. I do think it's important to have some type of private, closed-off room. I recommend reading some books by Sarah Susanka - her theory of using the space more wisely, as opposed to needing more space, was extremely valuable to me.

Wow. Thank you all. So much to think about! I am always impressed with the knowledge on this site. Lisa_a: I also had a concern with the 77" aisle - we do cook pasta (Italian heritage!). A prep sink could be a great addition to the space. I have not seen an oven under a cooktop in person and those pictures you sent are so helpful. Good point about the lack of landing space near the pantry! Originally, I was hoping for the cooktop/range to be on the exterior wall so your idea to relocate the sink in interesting. That triangle does seem to work well. The hutch is free standing and it also belongs to my MIL so I am not sure we will keep it or not. We would rather not move the pocket door for several reasons which are too long to explain here. We really did consider that but decided we were happier with it staying put. Brilliant question about the light switches! One is behind where the fridge is in plan B. I have never seen them placed inside of a cabinet before. Is the baking station just a longer counter? I do like the idea of a bookcase and one barstool relocated. We never eat at the counter - it is mainly used when friends/family are visiting and hanging out in the kitchen and by the kids to work on their homework. LOVE what you did with the blue tape! I will be checking to make sure everything will fit since one of the reasons we are doing this is to give us more storage. Sena01- I never mentioned that my fridge is a 36" counter depth one so it does stick out into the room a little. Do you think that would look ok in your plan? I was wondering if the wall would look a little off balance. I do like the MW over there. Buehl- I am the shortest at 5'4" and DH is 6'3". Hoping kids get their dad's height. :) Great advice of the venting of the oven - I had not thought about the steam, etc coming out of the front. Last time I looked, I could get a Bosch 5 burner cooktop for $1200 (maybe even less) and an oven for $2200. Maybe my prices are off. Is there a great 36" range for about the same amount? Please steer me in the right direction. Thank you again!

When I scroll down to the bottom of an email in the small reply blox I see cick here to reply or forward and when I hit reply a bigger box opens with all the settings for font and stuff, yours doesn't do that? Mary

Mary I do click on the "reply" and a slightly bigger box opens up, but it is much smaller than the box that my original message was written in.

If I had my way I'd compose and reply in an area close to the size of a word document.

Oh mine is pretty big for me and works fine. I don't hardly use gmail online unless I am travelung other wise at home I use my mail program to send and receive gmail. Mary

I can grab the lower right corner and drag it larger. Can you not do that?

Maybe it's a setting that I don't remember making, or because I use use gmail's plain HTML mode, or because I'm using the Linux version of Firefox? I can also resize the message box that I'm typing in right now.

If it were to work for you, it would look kinda like this:

I can't drag my reply box any bigger, using IE9. This is what I see and it's big to me. Mary

I don't use gmail online I get it in Thunderbird, but I just logged in to try it. Really looked strange - I hadn't seen it in a long time. Do you reply at the top of the message? If so just hold down the enter key and move the message down until you have all the room you want. Then use the up arrow key to move your cursor back to the top. When you're through composing the message you may have to put your cursor in front of the original message and hit the backspace key until you've eliminated any empty space.

That's a good work around. I use incredimail to get mine and have a nice big screen. Mary

Trying Bob's idea of starting at the top and hitting enter enter enter.....

Bob - I can type about 5 lines and then the words are half cut off on the bottom line unless I move the scroll bar on the far right side of my screen, then I have more space for a while, until I have to hit the scroll bar again.

Grabbing the right corner does not enlarge the area.

Chuggerguy, that demonstration is wonderful!

I had this very question a while back and found a solution at userstyles.org.

In Firefox I was able to accomplish this by 1) downloading the Stylish add-on and 2) going to this site: http://userstyles.org/styles/27916/bigger-gmail-compose-box-tested-2010-05-04 and clicking to install the script for Stylish. Works like a charm. My compose window area almost fills the page ! :-)

Once the script is installed, you may need to go into Stylish on your browser and change the numbers to suit your preferences -- click the Stylish icon on the status bar or address bar (if it's not in either place, right-click on a browser bar somewhere and select 'customize' and drag the Stylish icon to a browser bar).
