I've had a couple problems over the years that my AV wouldn't or couldn't fix. Finally asked symantec.com for info. They have a section for virus and trojans and give pretty good instructions on how to get rid of them.

I have occasionally gotten some nasty virus/spyware that most scanners cannot eliminate. Typically the culprit plants itself in the registry and regenerates itself whenever the computer is rebooted with a new name...pretty ingenious. Most scanners will delete or isolate the new file, but it just keeps coming back.

The product I have finally had to use is a manual one called HijackThis which shows you a listing along with a rating of how dangerous it thinks the files are that your computer is running at any given time are. It is then up to you to find what is triggering them into action. There are several online forums that offer assistance with the output of HijackThis....usually takes a few hours of research, but is lots easier than a complete rebuild of your OS.

Also turn off system restore shut down the computer. Then reboot the computer and turn system restore back on. Some times those virus's like to hide in the system restore points.

you will need some help from the pro tech help support forums. can you please go here and post on this area and tell Corrine I sent you. She will tell you step by step exactly what to do and what programs to use. this is not something you want to try on your own. You will need to register to post. Tell her everything you can about your pc stats and what you have done thus far. Once you have started following the directions please do not go to any other forums and follow other directions as this will slow down and confuse the process.

malwarebytes is an excellent program we use it daily on the help forums to clean up infections However you really should follow the link I provided and let us check the pc throughly to make sure there are no other parts left behind, when you have a zlob infection a hijack this log should always be checked by one of the pros. Zlob rarely is the only issue.

Malwarebytes is an excellent program but it does not remove everything, must remember just because the symptoms are gone does not mean a clean computer please follow up with the hijackthis log at the forum suggested.

There is a common misconception about shutting down system restore before cleaning up malware, but to the contrary, 'an infected restore point is better than no restore point at all', just in case bad goes to worse, or God help us,___worserer.

That is absolutely correct! wait till after all the infections have been cleared and you know all is well then you can deal with deleting possibly infected restore points. In fact it is always good practice to create a new restore point before you begin any type of cleaning undertaking so you know you have at least that one made recently. And they do cycle out so they will not stay on your pc forever.

I know what all of you are saying and maybe someday I'll do that Hijack this thing. It'll have to be when I have the time and ambition. I look at my computer exactly the same as I look at my truck. It gets me where I want to go, if it's not running perfectly thats OK, I'm not really going that far anyways. :-)

that really is not the point the fact is that zlob carries with it many added parts that can not be removed by the method you chose. You may think you pc is fine and want to live that way but just be informed you very likely have some very nasty stuff in your pc and just hope you don't still have the part that phones home and lets the hacker take over your pc.

Keeping pc's clean and clear of infection are not only done for ourself but to aid in the over all control of infections we can pass on to our friends and family who probably would prefer not to have them.

Hijack this is not a program to be run with out the aid of a professional support forum ever.

you may not be going far, and you may not make it there either and along the way you may loose your identity and a lot more.
