Low Disc Space

Hi,

I'm no techie, but my aunt asked me to look at her computer because it was getting so slow and she was receiving the message about being low on disc space. She has an HP pavilion laptop with XP SP2, about 27 GB HD. Usually she's about 25% full, but I looked and she has only 217 MB of space left !!

I have run Spybot and SuperAntiSpyware and they came up with nothing. CCleaner only removed about 35 MB of junk. As I type this (on another computer) I am running Avast on her laptop and noticed that it is taking an inordinately long time to go through C:\WINDOWS\Installer -- over an hour and a half for that file/folder alone ! (The "tested files" count is up to 3.7 million and climbing ! It's usually less than 600,000 total.)

Another thing I noticed is that in Windows Explorer Tools > Folder Options had "show hidden files and folders" instead of "do not show...." Though she is the only one using the computer, could that account for anything ?

When (or if ?) this Avast scan on her computer is done I was thinking of going to the site noted below which was suggested in the archives of another computer help site. It's supposed to help one see where one's free space has gone.

In the meantime are there any suggestions/comments ?

Thanks !

Scott
