Thanks for your quick response, please bear with me I don't know much about computers (completely self taught, I learn a lot here reading the posts but learning and using are very different.......I'm a newbie.) From trying to research the error I did find out (as you said) that it was related to the ATI Catalyst Driver-Video Card but when I tried to find driver updates at the ATI site I couldn't find the "Radeon Xpress 1100" I'm not playing games when the error occurs. The ati2mtag error comes up several times just from starting the computer.........prior to doing anything except opening System Info. to view the error log. I tried following your first set of instructions - going to Device Manager, Under System devices these controllers were listed: Direct memory access controller Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Embedded Controller Programmable interrupt controller + Universal Serial Bus Controllers .Standard Enhanced PCI to USB Host Controller .Standard OpenHCD USB Host Controller .Standard OpenHCD USB Host Controller in that same section there are 6 entries for PCI standard PCI-to-PCI bridge I was planning to post back here to find out which of those I was supposed to select but before doing that I made a mistake oops.......right-moused on Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Embedded Controller..followed your steps but when I clicked next (expecting to find a box in which to choose the PCI standard PCI-to-PCI bridge) there was no next, a download started.........in seconds the "Completing the Hardware Update Wizard" box came up saying "The wizard has finished installing the software for: Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Embedded Controller....The hardware you installed will not work until you restart your computer. Click finish to close the wizard. (no other choices) Restarted computer.....got a new error Source - Service Control Manager Description - The Rogers Update Manager service hung on starting. * I don't think that's a problem but I am concerned about having installed unknown hardware. I've no idea what I've just done or downloaded for that matter. In the vain hope of reversing what I'd done I Tried to do a System Restore.(thinking that would take care of my oops)....it looked like it was doing it, restarted and came up with "Could not restore to system checkpoint....no changes have been made" (System Restore has never worked for me in the past either) I have Microsoft .NET Framework 3.0 Service Pack 1 Help, please!!!

I did contact Worldnet, twice, via the "Chat". The first time the agent didn't respond when the going got rough. The second time, I may have phrased my question better, they come back with a "canned" fix, for Error 50, bla,bla.. It didn't work. Remember, after the reload of the modem driver I can make one solid connection per boot, e.g., this time. So I went back to Gateway and after a number of good reading fix ideas, including the BOIS check, Gateway has decided to send me a return for repair. Guess there must be a hardware problem. Now my problem is how do I get all my private stuff off the HDD before shipping. My biggest concern is the Palm Pilot Desktop. I will save the Palm files both on the Palm and on a back up drive, then do a defrag to jumble the "free space", I don't have a wipe/erase tool. I think most of the files I have elsewhere are not so sensitive. In any case I don't like sending my HDD out to be in the hands of others.

9/4/2016 i wanted to buy the Venetian 80" mirror - on sale $400 but then i was at the store and the manager says $200 shipping?? i was like have it shipped to your store and i will pick up! she said no" so i said GOODBYE! She actually said "goodbye" and i will not be shopping at RH anymore - there are Way too many retailers out there with free shipping, lower shipping or pick up. This is a big *Thank you* and an update to those who offered encouragement and comments. 1. I ended up using MiniTool and it did just what it was supposed to. I had hooked the new SSD to the computer with a USB cable, but even then the transfer only took an hour (no videos, not very many photos). I had a little trouble inside the tower because of a dearth of cables. HP Pavillions apparently don't waste an inch of wire. Because of that I wasn't able to hook up a spare drive as I'd hoped, but I may be able to get more cables in there "someday", and next time I buy a desktop, if I do, I'll look inside for more flexibility. Also had some trouble mounting the new drive. The 2.5" adapter I picked up at BB Big Box wasn't suitable, but I ended up being able to mount directly to the internal framework once I found suitable screws. I probably could have gotten away with a zip strip or such, but it would have screamed "amateur" too loud ... As it happens I also had a drive from an older Gateway, and wanted to see if anything could be recovered from it. So while I had my box apart I plugged in that drive, booted it with the USB boot disk I'd made for this project, and got it to respond to the recovery disks that came with it. I lost all the files, but we had most of those backed up from before, so sooner or late I'll try to restore those. So all in all I took Richard's advice and had fun, and now my wife thinks I'm a genius. Thanks again! :-)M
