refrigerator water filters

So, here's a strange question that probably nobody would want to know. I know that with all of the contemporary refrigerators that I have see, there is a built in water filter. Most people obviously want or need filtered water these days, but what about those who do NOT want filtered water??? Must one have a filter in place for the water dispenser to work, or can one simply have a "pass through"??

We have good water, like it and do not like the non-taste of filtered water. It is fast approaching time that we will have to replace our old fridge but I really would like an answer to this before being forced to do it. Any brand that anyone knows that you can do this with???

No, you don't need the filter - the water dispenser will work just fine without it. This is certainly true for KA fridges and I believe it is true for all fridges.

My GE Arctica SxS requires a bypass plug (included) be put in place if there's no filter installed.

Hi I am trying to find a replacement filter for my Fisher Paykel Refrigerator Model # E-522B. I can buy this directly from F/P - but will cost $ 50.00 every 6 months. I am wondering if anyone has used any universal type. If so where did you get it and what was the cost? I can't understand why one that says its universal wouldn't work, as long as the inlet and outlet lines are 1/4" which is the same. Any help would be appreciated.

I hooked my Liebherr up to my under sink Everpure filter, thus eliminating the in fridge unit. Saves space and $... Not sure, but I believe the Liebherr 'change filter' light is programed to come on at six months, regardless of water usage.

We were told to change our filter when the light comes on which should be every 6 mos to a year. We've had our KitchenAid for 3 years now and it never came on. I did buy a new filter though, at Sears, at $50 a few months ago. Just haven't changed it. We use the inside water dispenser ALL THE TIME, but not the ice too much as we don't put ice in our daily water/drinks. I haven't noticed a change in the taste, but after 3 years, I suppose it's time, especially since it's sitting in the drawer waiting installation.

My JennAir French door fridge will work without the h2o filter if needed.

My KA CD sxs works great without the water filter. The icemaker, however, tends not to work with the filter in place. This is a problem KA had repaired 3 times under warranty. The problem has not been resolved, only repaired 3 times. Of course, when the warranty ran out, it was then 'my problem.' Needless to say there will be no more of my money going to purchase KA products.
