I checked in on Coconut, there's no propane yet and it might be a bit, but the whole "family" including Christy and Jessie, are safe and sound.

Woodie just got her power back and her house is fine too, although many of her neighbors weren't as lucky.

San said they had a big wind and it was kind of scary but she's also safe and her house is intact.

Carol/dishesdone still has no power, Long Island Power company sucks.

The other thread is full, so I thought I'd start a new one for updates.

Thank you Annie. Your note from Coconut answers the exact questions I wrote in an email. They'll get it when they're up and running again. It's so good to know they're all ok. I'll keep them in my thoughts and close.

ingrid, When I first started reading GW, I couldn't understand how people could SP a healthy rose. But now I know. If it doesn't work for you, it doesn't. It's simple. I too maxed out on Austins, and probably will not add anymore. I think I have every possible color anyway:) Strange things do happen. When I first moved here 7 years ago (after never having gardened in my life!) I planted 6 white bearded irises. Well now I have about 100 from that 6 and they are in bloom now. I think I get more comments about them as I do my roses. And now the irises are intermingled with the roses (I do have to dig them up, separate them and redistributed a bit more this year) and it looks great. So a simple HD bag of irises does wonders. I probably should look at reblooming ones, but now I have an emotional attachment to these. And I can't say enough about alfalfa. Last year was the first time I used it and I do think it makes a huge difference. I have the biggest fattest buds this spring and am seeing many basals. I've also noticed that the root balls of many of my roses are thick with feeder roots where they were not before. So I'm sold. I'm really excited because I have 12 bands from Vintage (11 teas, one HP) and am planning a new rose bed on the other side of my yard. I too have fallen in love with teas and yes, the lack of pruning required is a plus! I just hope I get to stay in this house long enough to enjoy the fruits of all this labor!

Lynn, since you are a west coast gardener, you have another source of the unusual if you are willing to drive a bit. Two noted area gardens offer plant sales based on their collections. The Sacramento Cemetery Garden holds its event in April, and the San Jose Heirloom Rose Garden holds its in the fall, this year, the last Saturday in September. For both these events you will want to be there when they start, as the rarest roses go quickly. I have some wonderful roses I purchased at these events that I would not have found otherwise. Another option for you is to learn to root roses. Then you might find other gardeners with whom to trade cuttings. It is considered bad form to do this with roses that can easily be purchased from a (perhaps struggling) vendor, but if no one offers it, it is a good way to go. On a good day, I believe that the interest in old roses will revive, but it may not happen for another generation or two. That would be a long time to wait, and we need to preserve these roses for the next round. The reservoirs of the past have been drained. People don't plant roses in cemeteries anymore (more's the pity), and abandoned homesteads have pretty much been bulldozed and redeveloped. It is up to us to see that these roses will still be here the next time the world decides that they are interesting and valuable. Rosefolly

Jay! Your tree looks great too! I save alot of Al's post and print them. :) The 2 tree's I have in the 5-1-1 were almost dead too. They just took off and came right back! Now the roots have filled the pots and will need to be moved to a bigger container soon. I'm like you and many other's and wont go back to store bought mixes again for anything. :) Hi Mike, You did all the work. :) I just hung around offering support to my good friend. ;) If anything, I owe you for comming to my rescue almost a year ago, and pointing out these mixes and the container forum.. ;) Yes, we do owe most of the credit to Al~ :) His support and patience with our endless questions, we'll always be greatful for. :) My plants are happy too.. So that means I am. :) For the first time in yrs! I get to enjoy them instead of fight with them all summer. I have a pear tree, and appricot in containers. A plum in ground. Just got my fig last week. And orange and lemon in containers.. but with soil from yard still, and not happy! LOL! This weekend i'm going to look at the citrus at a new place I went to. 20 acers to browse! Plants, tree's and cactus and succulents! Heaven..LOL!!! Oh, I never said Michael was "involved" :). He doesn't go near the garden unless it's to see what's ready to eat. LOL! But he see's how well everything is doing, and doesn't mind me spending the money now, because plants actually live now. Were getting 14" terra cotta's for them too. I make him look at your posts and Al's and Josh. ;) When he saw how well you guys were doing with your plants, he was all for me trying these mixes. It's been awhile since i've heard "oh, something new to kill" ROFL! It was so bad, my mail man would write R.I.P on a box if he knew it was a plant from ebay. lol... My mom and friend are asking me to get them set up with the mixes too. :) I wish you could take me shopping too! ROFL! I hate driving around. lol! If I get a chance i'll try and get some pics of the tree's strugling in the soil from the yard... then after being in the gritty for a few weeks and post them later.

Mitch, You need to drive down for a visit in late May or July. Probably late May is best...because by then everything looks really spectacular and the diseases haven't arrived yet. June is a terrific month to see it too, but we have oodles of family birthdays and other family occasions that month so we're hardly ever home in June.. Of course, if this drought continues (and I cannot let myself believe it will) at the current level, there won't be much to see. I used to plant many more tomato plants than I do now--back in the early 2000s. At that point, the deer had not yet discovered the garden, so I could plant a couple of hundred plants outside the fenced-in garden, and the deer and rabbits hardly touched those unprotected plants. Now that we've been here a while, the deer, rabbits, raccoons and every other wild thing (including bobcats) like to get into the garden and feast. The first three are eating plants, but the bobcat is looking for birds or animals, including my cats. Since the wild animals found the garden, I now have to restrict myself to only what I can plant inside the fenced garden, so I'm only going to grow about 1/4 the number of tomatoes that I grew the first few years here. That's OK, though. I grow far too many anyway (although I don't have any trouble giving the extras away). I have had a great time trying new tomatoes, and I guess I'll never stop. I love many of the heirlooms, but the last couple of years, I've been trying a lot of fantastic hybrids from the Harris-Moran Seed Co. (and others) and I've been impressed with their flavor. I still grow a mix, but in hard years (when I expect drought), I grow a higher percentage of hybrids because they tend to produce more tomatoes per plant in many cases. Dawn

I'm glad you started this, Annie. I checked the other thread and it's full. I'm glad to hear from Tricia, and everyone else. I'm so happy that Tricia's house will be salvageable, but Tricia, I'm very sorry about your antiques.

All of you, I'm thinking of you today as you get slammed again. I just ain't fair!

Boy, I'm getting lazy. That was supposed to be it just ain't fair.

Sally, I got an email from coconut, who says that their power came back on, then they lost it again for 8 hours because of the new storm.

Carol never did get power back, she's running on a generator and said her hubs got gas for it, so hopefully she's warm and safe too.

There's some serious snow going on there now, though.

Thanks for asking about us. Such devastation for so many. We are lucky. The snow was so wet yesterday that it brought down a lot of trees that were iffy, so lots of people have power out again. They haven't had heat at Christy's job all week. The transformer that controls that and most of their electric is burnt out. I heard today that the utility companies have run out of transformers, since so many blew and they're trying to get some from other places, making it even longer to get power back for many.

It is so unbelievable just how much work there is to do to get the power back. I heard part of an interview yesterday with a bigwig with New Jersey's power company, and another partial interview with a man that was sent to help from another part of the country, I think California. I was in and out of my car, so I only heard snippets. Anyway, the California man was amazed at how wooded the northeast is. The Power Company guy talked about the tens of thousands of trees they have to take down, just to get the ones that are on the lines. Just amazing!

My heart goes out to all of you affected by this, and all the men and women working their tails off trying to fix everything.
