Cutesy Title Evading Me - basically I have a vent question...

Wow. Just when I thought I had a grip on my kitchen, I find the Appliance Forum. Shew!! I'm exhausted :o) This has been a great find for education - thanks to all for sharing their knowledge.

My situation: new construction, almost dried in. Have been doing lots of research on appliances. We are relatively young (early 30's), two kids, first build - and we are GCing. We have a pretty strict budget - I only have about 25k to do the whole kitchen (cabs, appl, counters, etc). Therefore I'm bargain shopping for appliances. I cook every day, but nothing too fancy. I am going to have a 36" gas cooktop, brand depends on best deal I can find at the time. Probably a Frigidaire or Jenn-Aire (ie, not high end).

I had NO clue that vents were so stinkin expensive!! Now mind you, I've never had a 'real' vent hood before, just the cheapy fan over the stove or OTR micro. I'm having a wood hood in my cabs, so I just need an insert doohicky. I've read the FAQ's on vents, realize my cfm need may vary depending on cooktop. My question is do I HAVE to have a 42" vent or can I make a 36" work (they seem to be less expensive). If it's hidden in the hood cab, I don't think it will look odd (or will it??). I've found a 36" KitchenAid with 1200cfm (which is way more than I will need) for sale pretty cheap as the lady changed her mind. Will the extra cfm's make up for the missing 6"??

TIA!
