Drywall & joint compound under tile- what do I need to know?

I'm tiling 1/2 way up the walls in a non-wet area of the bathroom. Do I need to prime the new areas of drywall and joint compound (it's the premixed stuff in the big buckets) before thinset?

Also- I feathered in a transition from cement board to sheetrock with this joint compound. It's at the edge of the shower area and I was going to coat it with Hydroban like the adjoining CBU walls: will that be OK or do I need to remove that joint compound and re-do the feathering with thinset?

Thanks!!!
