You may have a driver mismatch to the monitor. Try this: Boot up in the safe mode. That mode loads only the essential software to operate the computer and loads a low resolution, generic monitor driver. Does your monitor oepeate in this mode? If so, you may be on the path to a cure. Change the monitor driver to one that suits your monitor, then reboot. After you get it working again, check to see how the sleep modes are set. Before you change the driver, record the one that is current. You may wish to return to return to it. ************************** A tip for future reference: Before changing monitors, set the driver to the low resolution VGA mode, 640 x 480 pixels. Change monitors and then change to a driver one that matches the replacement monitor. ************************** I see another possible problem and that is your old monitor may not be plug-and-play. The later versions of Windows do plug-n-play while booting. It attempts to interrogate your monitor and if it gets a return of garbage, it may act on it if it isn't smart enough to know this is not a plug-n-play device. I ruined a monitor once when I first installed Windows 95. I had a video card that had the capablity to output a wide range of driving voltages to the monitor's sweep circuits. However, it was not a plug-n-play device. Windows set the card to the wrong voltages and overdrove the sweep circuits. The monitor lasted about 5 minutes. Lets us know how it turns out. If the monitor does not operate in the "safe mode", there is something more wrong - could be the monitor, or could be the video hardware /circuits.

A volt meter from Radio Shack costs $20. If you don't have one, you need one anyway. That would let you check the power supply. But you don't need to go there. If the monitor green light is on, it means the power supply is working. There is a high-voltage inverter inside the monitor which drives the backlight. That may be what has gone bad. Either way, none of this is consumer serviceable stuff. Get a new monitor and be done with it.

Especially so if HU##### wants a matching dryer and adds in the relatively high cost of Speed Queen's dryer versus, say, spending a lot less to get one of the Electrolux models with reversible washer doors (EFLS427, 527, and 627., IIRC) and their matching dryers. Also, I'm recalling that our local Home Depot has some of the new GE "fresh vent" (or maybe "Ultra Vent") front load washer models, and one or two of of those GEs now have reversible doors on the washer. (At least Home Depot said they did.) Sorry, can't recall model numbers at the moment but might be worth your while to check on. Despite the high price, Speed Queen FL models do have a devoted following for reasons outlined in this older thread and this other one. The SQ FL models come with a full five year factory warranty, too. But bear in mind that, if warranty service is needed for some reason, it goes through the selling dealer. So, it is best to check out your local vendors rather than buying a SQ on-line from an out-of-area seller. If you buy from an out-of-town online vendor, and are not inclined to DIY repairs (the SQ's are easy to work on, IME), getting SQ to arrange local warranty service reportedly can be slow and cumbersome. Those considerations might or might not make the Electrolux and GE models seem more attractive choices.

Pass, indeed. I've already taken the "dear" to smooth the waters... I say "just leave the dishes, I'll load the dishwasher", better that than have her find something else. I've already stated we've been married almost 50 years, so while I still haven't figured "it" all out, I've developed some defensive strategies... albeit more work for me. Still, she is a good cook, and does spend some time fixing a nice dinner most nights. And as you could guess by the length of time we've been married, I'm retired and need something to do anyway. This dishwasher started off with at lease one strike against it. First she wanted a washer with the controls on the upper edge, so the front had no visible controls, just a full width handle, otherwise a flat white surface. Our last maching was stainless steel inside, as most of the upper price models are. After reading in Consumer Reports (no longer a favorite of mine for other reasons) I learned that stainless adds nothing but cost. So while we got a machine with "hidden" controls, it is "plastic" inside. So, better she doesn't have to look inside: that's two strikes: utensil basket location, and not stainless. I think the machine does a good job, it is bigger than our past model, so we get two days (if I push) per wash and it uses less hot water, this sums to big energy$$ savings. Since these were my main goals in getting a new dishwasher, I can figure that's my pay for "doing the dishes". Yes, I know how good a job the machine does because I also empty the dishwasher.
