Virus won't let me do anything to try to fix it.

Hi...I got zapped tonight. My firewall popped up with a warning and stupidly I allowed the action. I first noticed that I couldn't upload pictures to photobucket or Flickr. Google isn't working...opens new windows. The only way I can get to a site is if I have the proper address,unless it happens to be a site like avg.com (for example).

I ran an AVG scan and nothing showed up, however any attempts I make to do scans, download any new antivirus software, or fix it in any way are shut down. I ran a Hijack this scan and I can't even copy the log.

Has anyone heard of anything like this ? Is there anything I can do that I haven't thought of ? I have a feeling this is a job for the experts.

The first step would be to boot in safe mode and run a full scan.

You could also try using Trend Micro's free online scanner.

I have AVG on my computer and it was updated this morning...so I'll do the scan in safe mode, however I get a 'fail to connect' message when I try to go to any antivirus sites, even the link you provided. I thought maybe I could outsmart it and downloaded Avast from downloads.com. I was able to download it, but when I tried to run the set up I get a self extract error.

I just posted this by grabbing the html code on Flicker and copy and pasting it into the text. You get to it on flicker now by clicking on the finger pointing at the box. I had a lot of problems with flicker last week with their constant changing. They pushed me into the new (sucky) BETA EXPERIENCE. Pictures are bigger but the comment space and tittle space are much small and the way to get to the HTML /BBC code is much more convoluted and enigmatic. But I couldn't get to them at all because when I clicked on the cute finger pointing at he box thing, it brought up a box but it was hidden behind the photo. I could just see its edge. I did complain to flicker and they did fix it. It took a couple of days. Now I go to that box and it pulls up a window with some weird symbols that make no sense but through experimentation and deductive reasoning I realize that the symbols mean html and bbc. One is a tac and I can't remember the other already. They are not intuitive examples of graffics. Yesterday I woke up and I found myself back in the old Flicker. So they got that part of the complaint tooÃ¢ÂÂ¦..Or maybe it was all a bad dream. I went to frequently asked questions on their help line and described my problem in a email form that they had, and they did get to it. I can't remember how I found the help line. I get lost on sites and sometimes I get lost right but I would not know how to get back there. All these changes to the worse is making me anxious and down right beeetchy. I was thinking of going to Flickriver. Apple is doing this dumbing down action too. They are screwing up all their software.

Rue Anemone: I have a suggestion for you, since you are new to the retail business. This winter, when you have a little time, perhaps you can attend at least one industry trade show. The two largest, and nearest to you, would be the Mid-Am show, which is in Chicago, usually the third week of January. It is a huge show, and you would find many vendors there, both in woody plants and perennials. Or, you could attend the CENTS show in Ohio - very big as well, and many nurseries and perennial growers represented there as well. This might give you a better overall view of the industry, as well as a wider palette of vendors to choose from. There are many excellent growers in the heart of the country, as well as east and west coast growers. These are not expensive shows to attend, if you like, there are optional seminars which are usually very well done and worth the time. Bring your walking shoes, a sturdy bag or briefcase to carry all your catalogs, and an open mind. I think you'd find this really helpful in your new business venture. Hope you've had a good season and are gearing up for an even better 2006! PP

The Llasa was picked up by the side of the road where someone dumped her off. No tags, obviously neglected, unspayed (puppy mill breeder?!). Springer was basically "dumped", too. Her daddy died of AIDS and no one else was remotely interested in her. She began "hanging out" with our dog and we took her in. One of our very dear friends is a groomer. She maintains that any dog can be groomed; the trouble is, more often than not, that they have never been trained in the basics of obedience work and THAT'S what creates the "issue". Whenever she has a "new one" she puts it in the crate, speaks with the owners and waits until the owners leave and then she takes care of business. She's great. If the dog is too obnoxious she simply refuses to work on them again. I don't blame her. She says the worst behaviour problems are nearly always the little dogs. Manners at the vet. or at the groomer are what define a good pet. Obedient and gentle. My opinion. Owner of large dog who "wouldn't" let me do anything to him when he was adopted. I now clip his nails, brush him, and am able to handle every part of his body with nary a flinch. Meghan told me what she needed to be able to do to him in an exam. I'm happy you've come so far with your pet. It's hard work. Good for you! Would we select something requiring professional grooming. Uh... nooo... (too lazy and too cheap).

I just had time to read the first few responses so I apologize if I repeat what's already been said... or if I missed something new. I'm sure your son, along with the rest of the team(s) notice the 'girls' hanging out. Besides being awkward to ask him, he would probably say he's embarrassed to you but to his friends, he may be their hero... bringing something to look at to the games. (lots of kids that age are plain curious & will look at whatever is there) It's kinda sad that she feels so insecure and threatened to behave that way. (I know that she may not be insecure or feel threatened but everything she does would lead me to believe she is either insecure & feels threatened or she has absolutely no social skills or idea of what is appropriate) I also agree it could be worse but there's nothing wrong with feeling annoyed by her. She seems to be in your face, marking her territory, and maybe wants you to know she exists. Getting there before you might make her feel she has the upper hand... more like you are on HER turf because she was there first... you are walking into a space she has already gotten comfortable in. I disagree that she must care about SS to drive all that way to be there... she may be driving all that way to get in your face so you know she's there, especially if it's her only opportunity for you to see her. (I kinda see that because SD's BM goes to every practice & game for her BF's kids... even if she is on crutches or sick. She wants BF's exW to see her there, she also gets there before exW & seats herself with all the other mothers & starts up conversation so when exW gets there, she will sit somewhere else... it's not about rooting for the kids at all~ BM also is loud & in your face kinda person... and tries to be the sexy SM, so I relate to that part of your post) As your title says "probably won't do anything"... that's exactly what you should do... NOTHING. The more you ignore her and be yourself, it will probably drive her crazy. Whatever she is trying to get out of it... if she gets nothing back, it will frustrate her. As for talking to ex about smoking, I would simply mention that SS smells like smoke, the next time he smells like smoke... and instead of saying please don't smoke, say something like "I wonder why DS smells like smoke?" and see if he cops to it & offers to refrain around the child or shrugs an "I don't know". Then I would tell him that "I'd sure hate to see DS become a smoker, it's a nasty habit" I think that will work better than being an exW that comes across telling him what he can or can't do. I think you should have a right to when it comes to your son's well being but it does no good to complain if it's not going to be well received. If you get a dialogue going about concern for your son, then he might get the message. (what kind of parent would say "oh, it's no big deal if he decides to be a smoker"? That would be ridiculous and inappropriate.)

Try rebooting in safe mode and running the AV software, then try rebooting in safe mode with network support and running the trend micro scan. If you're being blocked from AV sites, you're probably infected. It could be that this virus is newer than the latest definition files you have for AVG, in which case, it won't fix the problem in safe mode (but safe mode with network support might work).

that sounds like it could be one of the bad ones possibly vundo, let me suggest you go here and post in this area, ask Corrine for help tell her I sent you, she will assist you with this using some special programs. Be sure to say in your post that you are unable to get a hijack this log or run AV programs including online scans.

wow Andrea I knew it was a bad one, even worse than I thought, but you are doing very well following the directions. The team will get you fixed up. The tdssserv rootkit is one really nasty infection.
But rest assured you are in the hands of the very best teams on the internet, it takes time and many are in different time zones so keep that in mind.

Well Raven, I just got a CLEAN BILL OF HEALTH !!!!!!!!!

Corinne and the team really know their stuff...I was just doing my best to do as I was told. LOL My head didn't even explode...although it WAS close a time or two, and no one was allowed to talk to me for 2 days.

I really can't thank you guys enough...I've bookmarked that forum and plan to visit the lounge to associate some words.

You are very welcome Andrea, yes it is one of the best on the web for getting the top notch pros to work with you, it can get intimidating when having to go through so many logs and programs but when you get to the right place and the right team it makes all the difference in the world.
Please do come on back and visit us sometime, we do play too not just work LOL

You really surprised us when we saw the logs and realized it was a rootkit, there was some serious scrambling behind the scenes LOL

Take care and definitely do run those programs that were given on a weekly basis for a while.

were you able to get rid of all the toolbars or do you need help to do that using HJT? If you find you do just go on back and start a new post for that.

sapphires when you are sent to one of the pro help forums they all have very specific directions and instructions for you on how to install and set up and post hijackthis logs. But this is a program that is not for casual personal use it must be used by the pros who read the logs, they have special training to do that. So you really don't want to worry with that till you really have to. It is one of many of the diagnostics programs that they will tell you to run to be able to see what is on your pc and what should not be on your pc.
For example on the link I provided to Andrea at the top of that area are posted sticky threads that must be followed on how to do a submission and how to do logs etc.

have not used it. In general we use
GMER
catchme 0.3.1361 W2K/XP/Vista - rootkit/stealth malware detector by Gmer

will take a look at it though.

Combofix it one of the most impressive tools around, the folks that created mbam and combofix are awesome.

thanks Yep I had seen that thread too, it is pretty young in dev so a lot of the pro teams are doing some intense eval on it and submitting the info to AD. I had seen it caused some crashes and a few false positives but I think once it is a bit more mature and not in beta it will be a good tool. One to keep a watch on.

my computer will not allow me to access any programs or files. some message keeps popping up telling me i need to download this to get rid of the virus and spyware, and when i press ctrl+alt+del, some message pops up telling me some crazy crap, like this person is a internet terrorist

Aintnosunshine the first thing you should do is start a new thread rather than find a 6 month old one as this only causes confusion.

When you start the new thread please include the computer make and model, all names of firewall, anti virus and anti malware programs you are running and when they were last updated and a full test ran.

"Some message pops up" up is useless, write the message down and post that too, it might be the biggest help of all. Help can only be as good as the input provided by the person needing the help. Help us to help you.

I have the same virus can anyone help me like you helped the other guy I am only 13 and my mom doesn't know I have a virus...
