Re: Blue Screen (of death) and HP printers. I have an HP Photosmart 3210 XI All-In-One and it has a glitch with one application. It works with everything else I have. An updated driver did not help, and my queriers were ignored by both HP and MicroSoft. I have discovered a work-a-around. The Problem: Windows XP Office 2000 - buried within Office 2000 is a scaled down version of MicroSoft Photo Editor. The features that it has works very well. If I bring an image into the photo editor and attempt to print it, XP complains of an illegal operation and shuts down the photo editor. The Work-a-Around: After the computer has booted and before attempting to print an image from the photo editor, re-install the printer, or install it as another printer and delete the original install. This can be before starting the photo editor or after an image has been loaded into it. To install: Go to the "control Panel", click, or double click depending on how your computer is set up, on hte "add printer" icon. Follow the instructions in the connection wizard making sure that you choose the port that your printer is connected to. After "finish" of the install, a new printer icon will appear in the printers windows and the newly installed printer will have a check mark indicating it s the default printer. Right click on the old printer icon and delete it. (You probably don't need to uninstall the unused printer connection. I do it to conserve resources.) Close the windows and you are ready to print until the computer is rebooted again. As a bonus, the intall-printer untiltiy will remember all your replies except for the connection port making it short work to reinstall the next time. Strangely enough, this is the only application I have that exhibits this problem. All others work fine including an ancient version of NetScape.

Hi. As I mentioned, I did un-install & re-install at least 3 times following the instrux in the manual. No progress. I checked all the connections several times to no avail. Finally, after spending way too much time, I unplugged it from the wall outlet, where it has been plugged in since I got it, and plugged it into the breaker strip, and what do you know, it is now working. I guess the wall plug has gone bad. I don't know how many times my husband went out on a service call, only to find that the appliance wasn't plugged in/turned on. Once again, it was the simple fix. so if you have a problem, do more than just checking for good connection, actually change the outlet. Thanks

If you go to Control Panel and open your Printers, you will probably find that this printer has installed itself twice...one is listed as a FAX PRINTER and the other IS NOT . Select the one that IS NOT listed as a fax, right-click it and select it as your default printer. If you ever need to send a FAX, then you'll need to PRINT to the FAX PRINTER.

Are the print jobs being sent to the printer queue? Are you seeing the little printer icon down is the system tray? When you open it up, is there an error on the first job? Maybe stopping and starting the print spooler would help. Open a command prompt (click start-->Run, type in cmd and click OK) type the following two commands and press the enter key after each: net stop spooler net start spooler Have you deleted or uninstalled the printer a couple of times? Trying to figure out why it's showing LPT3 and not LPT1 after a clean reload of Windows. The DOT4_001 port is related to the USB connection and is perfectly normal for an HP all in one (showing both is normal). Another thing I can think of, you might try uninstalling (deleting) the printer from the Printer and Faxes folder, then unplug the usb cable from the computer side. Restart Windows, then plug the USB back in. BTW, the others that are attempting to help you don't necessarily know what you mean when you write "Have re-installed os, anitvirus, drivers, downloads from both manufactures for all" or "Have checked settings and options, many times, will do it again". Maybe you are repeating the same steps over and over missing just one critical piece. Like, for instance, HP printers install better if you wait for the installation to complete before plugging in the USB cable. The installation will tell you to plug it in, but there is a check mark there allowing you to plug it in later. Sometimes scanning issues are power related too, maybe try a different electrical outlet. Hope you get it sorted, Pam
