Saving a deleted pic from a camera

Hubby is a amateur photographer. Took a picture 'of a lifetime' and accidentally deleted it from the memory card -(scandisk - 2 gig), Canon camera.

Is it possible? There's no recycle bin or the equivalent.

I don't think the picture would be lost forever unless he took pictures over the deleted one. You would need a recovery program to see if the photo could be retreived. Do a Google search on retrieving deleted photos from amemory card.

Try the free Recuva - File Recovery
It may restore images and other files that have been deleted by user error from digital camera memory cards.

Jon, we were 10 years or so ago with a telephone provider which sold me a 2 year plan, but the phone stopped working after 1 year. When I cancelled, they kept charging me until I got the NY state attorney general involved. And there were those ridiculous charges and fees which we thoroughly hated. Tracphone became for us freedom. It was so bad to become a slave to phone calling which should be so unimportant in life. Good that you got a good deal, but watch out they will try to get you again! Imagine, some families have a bill of over $200 for cell phones per month, looks like full slavery to me (only my personal opinion). Bernd

After you connected the USB cable from the camera to the computer, you did turn the camera on - right? And the batterry had enough charge. I have the same setup except on a desktop: Windows 7 professional, Canon PowersShot SX50 HS. A hint: Instead of turning on the camera with the ON/OFF power button, press the review button. Its to the right of the viewfinder window. This powers up the camera for viewing images on the card without activating the lens and auto-focusing stuff - saves battery power. Next on you computer, click (or double click depending on you settings) on "Computer". This should bring a panel showing all your hard drives, USB ports and the camera. Click on the camera to open a panel showing the folders or files on the SD card. Navigate down to the folder with the desired images; also arrange to have open the folder where you wish to copy the images to. You can right-click and hold down on a file to drag it to the "to" panel. release the mosue button. a small pop-up menu appears - choose copy here. Careful: Do not choose "move to here". That will make a copy in the "to" panel and delete the file in the camera.

Sounds like you took your photos with a regular "point and shoot" camera. They are definately not the right camera to use, but people don't realize that. DSRL cameras are the solution, but only if you have and use a "fast" lens. P&S cameras just don't have lens that can open up enough to allow enough light and therefore you end up with dark photos. Using a flash in that large an area wil not help either unless you are right on the front row. Not all is lost. You can try my suggestion below. Once a photo is under exposed its difficult to bring out detail without causing an extreme blur to it, but if you have Photo Shop Elements it can be done by going to "enhance" and then "levels". Move the slider to the left until the photo lightens. Then go to "color correction" and hit that. Finish up by going to "filters", "sharpen" and use "unsharp mask". You may or may not be able to save a few of the photos that way.

Another alternative would be your cell phone. (Use mine to catch shots when regular camera isn't handy.) If you have a cell w/camera, some newer ones in recent years take some pretty decent photos. Just need a cord to attach phone to PC. Hopefully it's standard mini USB connection on the phone, you can pick those up at office supply, Radio Shack, Target, think Walgreens, probably about any place, for $12 or so. (Avoid cellular dealer if possible, they charge a lot more on some accessories.) Upload to your computer and save. Then open a freebie Pbucket account and upload from your computer to Pbucket. If it takes grainy shots, tho (like my DH's cell), I'd use one of methods mentioned above.

If he didn't actually delete it, he just can't see it anymore looking thru the camera review, you could try looking through the memory card pictures through a card reader attached to the computer.

I have on occasion, slightly changed a pic on the memory card (rotated, anything) and my Canon camera no longer even shows it, but when I look for it as instructed above, I can see it on the card.

Thanks, we tried Recuva (thanks Randy), but couldn't figure out how to run it. Luckily, he called a fellow photographer who led him to a free utility Digital Image Recovery, which worked. His friend talked him through it and it brought back so many old pictures he couldn't believe. He had pics he deleted from last year reappear.

He was deleting a bunch of pictures and accidently deleted one, which was in the string he wanted to get rid of. I guess that proves that nothing deleted, is really gone.
