My appliance dealer uses only GE for their extended warranties on all appliances. I'm buying Jenn-air, Kitchen Aid, and GE Monagram with the GE extended. I trust my appliance dealer and assume that they know what they are doing. I hope I don't need to use any - but that remains to be seen. It is costing me $80 per appliance for a 4 year extension.

I usually steer away from extended warranties with any electronic purchase I make, but I have a more unique situation with the cooktop and wall ovens I'm purchasing. I'm purchasing them today before the GE Monogram line increases in price in February (or so I've been told by a couple of different sources). There is supposedly going to be a 7% increase and this is almost exactly what it costs to get the extended warranties for 3 years at the current prices of the appliances. Since we're building a house and I won't even be using these appliances until 6-8 months from now, I was a little concerned of only having 4-6 months of the warranty that comes with the appliances. Since I won't have more time than that for them to "break down," I thought it might be wise to purchase the warranties with the money I saved, verus buying them at an increased price in 6 months and only having 1 year standard warranty. Kind of skewed logic and I'm still not 100% convinced I'm making the right choice! I just have no idea how much they will really increase in price (one source said 7%, another said 10-20%) and I'm a little chicken to wait it out! Anyway, thanks again for your thoughts!! Nancy

Consumer reports says they are unnecessary. I have them on all my appliances. Some are through my utility company, some through sears and some from my place of purchase. The utility company is the cheapest and as a result they take longer to come, but the more appliances you have, the less expensive the cost. You don't have to purchase the appliance from Sears, but they will sell you the warranty which includes a "free" maintenance visit. If you buy from the manufacturer and the appliance goes bad and they can't fix it, usually you will receive a coupon towards the purchase of a new appliance of that brand. This usually happens when the appliance is ten years or older. To be specific about which appliances you need extended warranties and which you don't, you need to state the appliance and its manufacturer. I would check with consumer reports (you can join online) to check how reliable a product is. Reliability is determined by results from their annual survey so I think its pretty accurate. For me, I have the extended warranty because I hate surprises and visits to evaluate an appliance without fixing it can be costly. That being said, I often wait until the manufacturers warranty is about to expire, to purchase the extended warranty. Why spend money sooner then you have to - the manufacturers warranty is in effect for X number of years. Some companies (Amana for instance) will send you a notice that your warranty is about to expire and ask if you want to extend it. That's why I do register my appliances. Hope this helps.

Hi try_hard, I'm feeling a little better about purchasing the extended warranty. GE told me that the store where I purchased the machine did NOT do extended warranty repairs for them. When I called the store they said they did...and if I needed a repair under the extended warranty just to call them instead of GE and they'd arrange it with GE for me! I also stumbled upon another repair shop that does GE warranty repairs. She said they've never had any trouble and that they don't really get anything from dealing with GE. GE pays them a flat rate for each repair. I'd recommend that you call around to different appliance repair shops in your area and ask them if they do GE warranty repairs and/or if they know anything about the company, etc. GE told me if I'd purchased the warranty directly from them I'd have 30 days to cancel. The fellow said I could actually cancel at any time but probably wouldn't get a full refund if it was after a year, etc. But who knows if he knew what he was talking about!! I'd start with the repair shops. I'll be interested to hear if you find anything out! I paid $125 for 4 years. So....I should not have to pay for any repairs for 5 years...including the 1 year factory warranty. Good luck! Mary
