External HD not showing

I have a Seagate external hd, that shows up in the device manager, but does not show up when I click on my computer. Am running Windows XP Home SP2. Would appreciate any help you can give me to try and get this resolved. Thank you in advance.

How's it hook up to the computer ?

I would imagine...
If you assign it a drive letter it will show everywhere normal. If you dont readily see the drive letter choice drop down somewhere handy to you;

Might open the 'Computer Management' window & probably find it in there somewhere, probably as removable storage - and if you fiddle looking around a bit with right clicking and selecting properties ... eventually you can assign it a drive letter, and then it should show in my computer... and there you go!

Sorry for vagueness, but its been a long time since I've stumbled into that. But that should be the fix.

This hooks to the computer via a USB 2 port. I think it's called "plug & play".
I don't really know what I'm doing here on this end, so not understanding.
This is what I'm seeing while the "My Computer" window is opened....
Files Stored on this computer: Shared Documents and another folder called Linda's Documents.
Hard Disk Drives: Local Disk (C:)
Devices with Removable Storage:
3 1/2 Floppy (A:)
DVD Drive (D:)
CD-RW Drive (E:)
Removable Disk (F:)
Scanners & Camera: HP psc 1300 series
Is it the Removable Disk (F:) that I need to rename? When I double click on it, I get a message to insert disk into Drive F.
I'm sure this is very simple to do, but I'm very leary since I'm not knowledgable with this. Thank you so very much for your time in trying to explain this to me. I truly appreciate it.

what acronis does is different than just doing a back up of files, acronis takes a snap shot of your entire hard drive including the operating system so it is an image, then should you need to restore from it you would be restoring every single thing including the operating system. In doing just data and file backups should you need to do a full reformat then you would need to have either a copy of your operating system cd to re-install your OS or the recovery cd, and then you could use your file and data backups to put those back in place once you had re-installed your OS and done all the many updates for it, which can be a long and tedious procedure. So it is a better way to backup when using an image you can be back up and running in very short order at the exact point in time that you did your last image save. You could certainly leave the data you have saved on the external hard drive and just make a new folder to put your acronis images into you seem to have plenty of room available. Usually the acronis version that comes with a branded drive may be a bit different than the stand alone version of acronis you can buy but I would think it would be just fine. there are some very good tutorials available on how to use acronis if you need those just ask or google for it. In my opinion an image backup is the best way to go.

this drive can be considered a slave or 2nd hard drive. when i reformatted it on my old p2 laptop, the bios must have been limited to 31gb. i use disc management now and it says the 31gb partition or volume is healthy but there is an 80gb unknown healthy volume also. the total drive is 112gb or so. so how do i get back to the original 112gb size? use fdisk or something? been doing a little reading on 2nd hard drives.

DId you want to offer me advice only if I would have said I got my tape measure out and got an exact dimension of 21 feet,5 3/4 inch vs. if it was 24 feet, 10 1/4 inch ??? I know that we are under what the manufacturer recommends, no need to be more specific as the "run" doesn't have anything to do with the aesthetics on the outside. And to clarify: "guess we need the makeup air too" I am NOT guessing. I know. I am sorry that you took my sentence so literal. I was just saying that I guess we need it, because in our area anything over 300 CFM will require the makeup air. This is code for our city and we would like to pass inspection! :) maire: yes, we will be able to paint cover to match rest of house. However, there is no way to cover with landscaping b/c of the height of where this is placed. It is a little more than half way up the side of garage (not gonna get my tape measure :) so, don't quote me haha!) By painting it, it will help though. Your set-up sounds perfect. Guess after awhile we will get used to it and probably won't even notice it protruding out. Never imagined this ventilation business would be so troublesome. I cannot even begin to tell you the people that I have talked to about this, no-one ever on the same page, even got 2 different opinions from the actual tech support as to what was needed. I think I have it finally figured out. Hope I love love love my new set-up! Thanks again! :)

Owbist, thanks for the advice. I made a comment accompanying the image backup Â something like, Âfirst backup image for laptop with Vista OS Nov 09Â. So, I wonder, like in your situation, if I named the folder just ÂlaptopÂ whether it would be possible to delete the image from the HD, and then do it over again, saving it with a more detailed description? Or once something is in the HD, is it impossible to take it out? And thank you for your help, and the links, Raven. IÂm not sure if I actually created a folder when I backed up the image today. IÂll have to check. I unplugged the HD, and put it away. IÂm not really sure whether to leave it connected to my computer at all times? Also, when I tried to Âsafely remove hardwareÂ when I attempted to shut off the HD, I got a message saying something like it couldnÂt be shut down because a program was using it (which as far as I could tell, there was no program using it). I searched the internet, and see that this isnÂt an uncommon problem. I eventually resolved it by shutting down the computer and then disconnecting the HD.

Sort of .. Kind of .. sounds like F is a Memory Card drive for like a camera ? It could be your usb hard drive, but, if it is, something is configured wrong or not configured at all.
You dont want to rename F,, as F is its drive name.

Might want to right click on the F drive and select Properties - and see if you can determine what it is.

You may also want to try right clicking MyComputer on your desktop and selecting Explore. Maybe you can see that external hard drive there.

you can copy and paste this into your Run line off the Start menu, and open the Computer Management console;
%SystemRoot%\system32\compmgmt.msc /s

There you will see it if you expand the Storage then Removable Storage and the items under it.
