W8 questions

Got a W8 laptop with a touch sensitive screen. Humongous disappointment but had to get it. Not at all like the previous Windows 7 or XP.

I am having extreme problems trying to do everything and wanted to know

1. In IE, how does one save something to Favorites? It is not obvious

2. How can you edit the favorites more easily? I saw some favs that came with the pc but got tired deleting them. All the okaces I could click on with W7 are gone and there is no way to tweak them en masse. I recall once being able to click Favs below the File Menu and getting a list of all favs that was scrollable. Now there is no way to do that.

3, W7 and XP had some left/right buttons that could be used to go to the previous screen and next screen. I could also get a list of all the prev urls, up 5 or 19 at a time but cannot do that anymore.

You have two IE's
a.. Tiles IE on the Start Screen.
b. The desktop version of IE.

It sounds like you are not really using the touch screen as a touch screen yet are using the Start/Tile Screen IE. ..Touch would be about the only real reason to use the Start/Tiled IE.

Try using the desktop version, it is much like what you are used to.

On both you touch or click on the Star to open favorites or on the desktop version you can view the menu bar by pressing the ALT key or righ clicking a blank spot on the top bar and selecting Menu bar to show full time or even Favorites bar.

I have two IEs??? really?

What is a Start/Tile Screen IE? I am not sure I understood.

And how would I use the "desktop version"?

By the way, do you know how to close IE? I have to power down and start the PC to do that. Nothing I have tried sort of closes it. I end up making the font bigger or smaller instead.

One way to turn your open IE off.... is to touch top of the display and drag it down to the bottom of the display. 2nd way would be to touch left side of screen and drag slightly to right to open the history... and then touch and drag IE out and down to the bottom of the display. /// One way to find Windows Updates would be to touch upper right side of screen and drag slightly to the left.. there you will open the Charms Bar and see the search icon. Search Updates and you'll see windows updates in the list. /// From that Charms Bar you will also see the gear for 'Settings' from that you can access the Power icon allowing you to restart or shutdown.

Well, seems I now have W8.1 on my subject Laptop. I made numerous requests to the MS Store and left my computer on overnight a couple times, nothing. Then suddenly this afternoon, about a hour ago I get a notice that MS wants to update to W8.1. a "restart" was needed. I click go ahead and forget about doing any work while that is going on. The "you can work applied only to the download which it seems was completed without any notice on my part. But, from there it takes at least 20 minutes for Update to do its work, including a second password code being required. I agreed that the "code" could be telephoned to me. After about a 5 minute wait I went back and requested the "code" be sent to my email address... I have another computer on-line to catch the email. Got the password/code there within the next two minutes. Some of the other "stuff" I am not yet altogether comfortable with, but what choice do I have: 1) The legal stuff seems to give MS lots of access to my computer 2) It appears W8.1 introduces "cloud" storage for those of us who have thus far gotten by just fine without it. This seems to be the purpose of the "Sky Drive" on the W8+ Set of tiles and it seems some of the operational OS stuff is backed up, but not sure I understand yet what else of "mine" is simply taken by MS and put on the "Sky Drive" and anywhere else pleases them. The update chanced the desktop boot up desktop from a scene of Seattle with an enlarged Space Needle to a colorful circular pattern, not better but I was not given a choice. The display on my Laptop seems brighter, maybe more HD, is that a possible effect of the W8.1 upgrade...right I didn't read the MS marketing stuff. Well for better or worse I now have W8.1 on my one and only W8 machine: still have one W7 and numerous XP only one of which is still active. Thank to all as I worked to get W8.1 upgrade on my qualified (free upgrade) machine.

Your kitchen designer sounds like a person who does not see all roads leading to home meaning there are many different ways to achieve the same goal... Most semi custom cabinet companies that are limited to be more Henry Ford like in production do not offer the 12" high cabinets in each 3" width from 9" to 36" or wider. They tend to offer them for the sizes used over the appliances which use them the most. So 30, 33, and 36" would be commonly needed. Your kitchen plan normally has a lot of other widths used that are not those sizes. The companies that have the stacked cabinets pre made are generally 42" or higher. I have 5 cabinets lines I offer. 3 of the 5 do not have stacked cabinets in the book.... One of the 3 has 12" high cabinets starting 12" wide but does not have a corner cabinet less then 30" high.... They happen to offer custom cabinets on a quote by quote basis which is why I like them. But you should see my point... Your kitchen designer should have explained better the reason why they did not offer you what you were looking for. It is either they feel a 27" under a 12" with a 3" crown over that is not a good use of space or.... they do not have a company they can do it at all or for the price they are planning to present to you.... That discussion would have been much more meaning full.... I can for example use a stacked cabinet that is 42" having 2 open compartments, with Showplace and shrink it 3" if you want the molding as most would... I can also with them as was suggested above just build the door with a glass panel in the top section of it. They are # 4 out of my 5 as 5 being the highest price in general.... 18" is the general rule of thumb for recommended clearance to the countertop. 15" is considered as low as you should go and 21" is pushing the upper side of reasonability for most projects... The codes as noted above are concerned with being able to set fire to combustible wood cabinets having appliances that generate heat under them... You should be able to do what you are looking for. You just have to decide what look you like, crown or no crown, and find who can offer it to you at a price you can afford...

Put your mouse at the top of the Start Screen program tiles and drag the top edge to the bottom of the screen closes them. Or press Alt + F4 should work too.

Press the desktop tile... then you should see a desktop icon for IE. It opens the desktop version hopefully.

At the risk of sounding real dumb, what is the desktop tile???

Is a tile one of those squares that is displayed in a group after the PC boots up? With program names inside?

Sometimes, when I booted up, a bunch of squares and rectangles appear together and they start programs when I touch them. They will have pgm names inside.

I used to touch one that had IE inside but it was not an user friendly IE. I have not seen anything else with IE in it.

But the squares with IE/etc no longer display any longer. I have no idea what I did but am now getting (when I boot up) a screen that looks like a desktop screen would look like in XP but with the PC Maker's Name (Toshiba) in the background and a handful of icons (Recycle Bin; Desktop Assist, etc). I think I ended here by touching one of the squares. But there is no (obvious) way to return back to the view that had all those squares. I tried touching from the left to the right and other combinations. No dice. Without the squares, I have not been able to get back into IE ever since (which is why I could not reply sooner); I am using another computer.

When trying to learn a new system I always recommend the user get a beverage of choice, sit back, and ferret through the on-board Help. And, it doesn't have to be just once.

It is amazing how much is there both in the basic offerings, and in response to general keywords. Sometimes there are FAQs and troubleshooters available for review just in case.

If you right click that desktop and choose 'New.... Shortcut.... type in .... "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe" press next and name it IE.

Then you will have an Internet Explorer icon on your desktop.

If you press the 'Windows' key, it will switch you back and forth from Desktop to the new Modern/Tile screen.

Oh fantastic. That did it. Thank you very much

One last ? that I have not figured out.... how do you turn off the computer with W8? So far, I just press the power button until the PC stops. Tried looking in the Task Manager but found nothing that would do a RESTART or SHUTDOWN.
