Suspicios about Modem request - Need Input please

A friend told me that someone asked her sister if they could put a modem in her spare bedroom. He said nothing else would go there, just the modem. I'm very suspicious of this request and told her so. My friend's sister has only known this person about 2-3 months, just FYI. She said possibly he needed this modem in order to send out his "mass" emails for marketing his business which supposedly involves creating websites. I still think this doesn't make sense & I think this request probably involves something possibly illegal. Does this make sense to anyone? Thanks, I appreciate the input.

We would need to know what's connected to it? to better answer the question. Is this an apartment type building?

Rhome410: Good points all. The resource room is sort of an informal study/office. We both acknowledged the need for such an area, but didn't want to waste the sq footage on a full size study. Similarly, we didn't want to waste the space on a formal dining room, and opted for 1 larger than average dining area. The single car garage could easily be renamed shop area. That's my hobby, woodworking. The DW is into cropping, and will have an area for that in the bonus room upstairs. Yes there are cabinets next to the RF. This is not the dream house, but we do plan on being in it for the next 5 years or so. Chapnc: Thanks for your comments! The island setup is really the point of struggle for us. We see lots of ideas we like, but the dims are not exactly the same, and as you know that makes all the difference. The "L" is one idea we are kicking around. I totally agree on the powder bath, that's a change we're making. The "X" in the master bath is in fact a knee space for a chair. Eventhecatisaboy: Backdoor entry to garage is a great idea. I'd thought about it before, but somehow it had slipped my mind. Thanks for bringing that up. Actually, your input brought about a discussion about the laundry room, and we are now going to make that about 2' wider, and incorporate a wall of cubbies/sitting space, making it more of a mudroom. And possibly put a door there as well. We've kicked around the entry into the master, but the DW doesn't want everyone walking in the front door to be able to see into the room right off the bat. I think it would work either way. Chisue, the front powder came about as a compromise. There was no way to make it fit without losing the cubbies, and the DW really wanted the cubbies. we're still kicking that front powder room around, and it may migrate back to the back hall area. The resource room is a poor man's study. :) Due to the way we live, and work, the closet/bath set up works for us best. You nailed the winding corridor, another design compromise. In the original drafts, we didn't have it. It just got added in this draft. We felt that not having a hallway there *forced* all the traffic to go through the kitchen 100% of the time. The hallway is supposed to provide an option, as unlikely as it is it will get used... :) Thanks everyone, please keep the ideas coming!!

I am checking into that - I had my husband read your reply. Photo editing - I paint on canvas and photo them to put on the web. I rarely do any editing except for trimming, or making web ready. My new 14 MB Olympus camera produces large pics(20MB+) but not in RAW --or at least if it does I haven't found how to use it yet-:) I do take pics for resources for my paintings. I only mention so as to have enough memory for processing - which I haven't had any problems with as yet. Thanks!

Thank you lovehadley and imamommy, I too feel that SD16 has serious issues that go far beyond being a teenager. Particularly because this behavior did not start when she entered her teen years, it was already well-established. We did have SD in counseling when she was younger (about 10). But as soon as the counselor asked to speak with BM, she refused to allow SD to go to counseling anymore. I find that very suspicious, as DH and I both willingly spoke to the counselor. But BM would not. BM indicates she's going to again get counseling for SD, but I doubt this happens because BM "likes" SD's behavior. BM is glad SD is treating DH like crap. Even though DH and BM divorced when SD was 2 and she's now nearly 17, BM still has it in for DH. BM has remarried and has other kids, but she seems to spend an inordinate amount of time trying to figure out how to get back at DH. DH used to feel that SD was so enthralled by BM that she did whatever BM wanted to please her. But now that SD is nearly 17, surely she should have a mind of her own and be responsible for her own actions?! I am not unfamiliar with how teens act, as my brother has four of them (now ages 19 to 14). I've been around them, and yes they can be rude but not outright hostile and nasty. Plus, my brother has no problem pointing out to them when they've overstepped their bounds. DH cannot do that with SD, for fear she will not like him. SD has been given WAY too much power in this situation, to everyone's detriment. DH claims he did not hear SD say "I'd like to see you try it." But for her to even say it is pretty damn in your face. It's a perfect example of her attitude and behavior. This kid has thrown a phone at me while I was holding my baby. She has tried to hit my baby in the head with a doorknob. She has pushed me while I was at the top of the stairs. She is very troubled, and she runs the show. I put the example of DH asking her to be polite on here because it is the FIRST time he has actually stood up to SD and said her behavior is not acceptable. I agree there is much more to this story, I just can't begin to type it all here.

I didn't put the cooktop in the island -- I don't think you have to get used to the idea. You have a choice. I have had both and really like having an island as a buffet counter, dough working area and prep space -- even a dual sided work space when DH and I are both working. I had them with young kids, but never with seating. We didn't have any safety issues, but I can see the potential and I dont think it would be comfortable or appealing to sit at the island if the cooktop is on. Your view is blocked, there will be heat and you (or your book, homework, phone, etc.) can get splattered. You could even put the cleanup sink an DW in the island and have a bar sink in the beverage/snack area but not a prep sink. I tend to like single level islands, and it seems a lot of folks who have had dual level ones change them out to a single level. You could do two levels if that suits you better. Either way, my preference would be to not have seating at the island. That appears to be a major traffic path. Do you really need it? Would it really work out well? I didn't have room to even consider seating in my kitchen, so I put 13" deep cabinets (like my wall cabinets) on the back side of my island. It has turned out to be incredible small appliance, outdoor or holiday dish storage and more. You could make the cabinets 15" and pick up just a little more in storage options (a few appliances and serving pieces could use the extra room). If you put a bench against the wall, furniture or built-in, you can extend that island and still have a good size sink and good prep space.

At the least it appears he's using her Internet connection from her modem fed to his router or directly to a computer, that she pays for I guess, hard to say what this guy is up too but anything bad would be tracked to her apartment, because it's her cable that is connected.

Did your daughter have Internet set up in her apartment? And did she have a modem also? Not sure how this guy went about connecting things here????

No this isn't my daughter, but a friend's sister. This guy, who she actually hasn't known very long, asked if he could put a modem in her spare bedroom & nothing else. No computer! So that sends up a red flag to me! The friend's sister would have her internet set up with a modem when she moves to this apartment building. Just seems odd to me & figured I would ask here.

I personally would say NO. Not knowing this person well is grounds enough to simply say no. She does not know what he may be doing and it seems he is not very forthcoming with info to her as to why and what he expects to accomplish. She should just step away with out full disclosure and even with it I just would not do it. If it is connected to her apt. and her internet she will be the one it will show as the owner and heaven forbid he is involved in something like child porn or other illegal activities she would be involved big time. I see no positives in this for her in any way so why chance it.

It's very odd I agree. I'd like to find out what's connected to it. Maybe it's not a modem only looks like one. What if there is a camera inside.

Someone use there head and remove it!

Thank you! I will pass this info onto my friend who can tell her sister NO, don't do it! She hasn't moved here yet & isn't very tech savvy so this "modem" could actually be anything & yes, even a camera. This lady just recently started "dating" this guy so it seems highly suspicious to me for her to get this request so soon in their relationship. I appreciate the input and was just trying to find out if there could be a logical reason for him wanting to do this. Thanks!

hum did she by any chance meet this new guy she is "dating" online? I am just feeling goose bumps and seeing big giant red flags here. I sure hope I am wrong.
I would also advise her to make sure any webcams on her computers are fully disabled or even put tape over them, there have been several cases recently of remotely activated webcams.

Thanks ravencajun. Yes, she did meet this guy online & that is what concerned me after hearing other things about this relationship. I will pass this info onto her sister, who will pass it on & hopefully this advise will be taken.

Tell them to say "NO way" itÂs possible that could be a dummy modem with a transmitting hidden camera in side feeding back live Pics of what goes on in the bedroom!!!!
