Concrete or asphalt drive in Alabama

We are building a house in northern Alabama and in our budget we were only planning to do the pad outside the garage in concrete, and then ut stones up to the road. Finishing off the driveway with concrete is going to cost another $3500 which we don't have. Over the weekend we got to talking and thought why not do the entire driveway, including the pad outside the garage in asphalt. We asked our contractor and he says he never used asphalt. I'm from Philadelphia and most driveways there are asphalt, but down here in Alabama I see mostly concrete. Is there a reason for this? and should we stay away from asphalt in the South? If not, I think going to the cheaper material would allow us to pave the entire driveway now rather than having to stone most of it. What do you think?
